is 600 grit fine enough to move on to applying the paint? I may try a coat before the weekend.

Quoted: Don't use foam brushes, or rollers, it will leave texture. Go to harbor freight and buy a cheap spray setup. The amazon one you linked to could work, but its not made for spraying cars. Gravity fed is what you should get. https://www.harborfreight.com/air-tools-compressors/air-spray-guns.html?category=2029¤t=1 View Quote This is good advice if you don’t have time to sand-down the texture between coats, and build-up additional coats with brushes. Get lots of sandpaper, lots of weed, lots of paint, and groove on it long time! |

Quoted: This thread is actually pretty awesome. Top work, OP View Quote thanks, it's probably going to look like ass up close, but I refuse to pay 2k to paint a car that's worth 3k, and I don't want it to rust. I see other people with blue corollas on the road with a completely rusted roof and hood. Stay away from toyota blue |

Didn’t read the whole thread, but I’ve used this in the past
https://www.paintscratch.com/neworder/store/item/MAX/single/ It’s actual catalyzed 2 part clear in a spray can (we used something similar at the auto plants in the repair section) it’s better than any non catalyzed clear in a can that you can get(all the iv inhibitors are in the gardener) You can get semi professional results with some practice, the only bad thing is it’s a a one shot job as once the hardener is mixed in you have a limited window to use Then I’d just get your paint code and send it to one of those places that can mix the correct base coat color in a can for you |

Congratulations on committing to a task that most people are afraid to even attempt. Even the unsanded paint with lap marks and orange peel looks way better than the before photos on page 1. Some more sanding and a coat or two applied out of the sun and OP's car will be looking good.
Don't start sanding until the paint hardens up. It will take a while even in the Florida sun. If it gums up your sandpaper it was too soon! Keep it up OP and you will earn a University of Hard Knocks painting diploma in no time! |
|
It will probably be next Friday before I can do any more painting. I don't mind the orange peel, so long as it looks consistent.
It just rained here at dusk and the water beads up really nice on the roof now. I think I'm going to add all of the remaining thinner to the rest of the paint. It's really too thick for my purposes. |

Quoted: I've been thinking about NOT painting the plastic accents like the front and rear bumpers and the bottom side panels, leaving them blue. Only the metal parts are having paint issues. What do you think about that? Next up: https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/5205/IMG_8948-2491367.jpg View Quote |

that sounds like a good tip. Can you link to a product?
what if I don't put the hardener in to the paint for that step? does the hardener act in opposition to a flex agent? |

Quoted: Some good things are worth doing badly at first, just to get started. View Quote i have a blue Corolla commuter. Watching closely op. Keep us updated. May need this for the future. eta. My blue might be a little more purple than yours. Mine is 2014. No major signs of clear failure yet. |

Your car is 2012 and already like that? My Toyota Camry took 20 years before it started having paint issues like that. I wonder if its the FL sun or other paint changes Toyota did.
But anyway OP, good job on trying hard and not giving up. |

I hope it's paint weekend... If you were closer I'd loan you an easy-up.

The sun is brutal here if your car is left outside all day and or don't have a garage. |

I've had one in my amazon cart for a while, but had not thought about it for this job. Off to FB to see if I can score one cheap. Money's tight...

LOL oh man I did this on my 66 C-10....you're in for a TON of sanding OP. Did you thin the tractor paint at all? You'll do a lot more coats but there will be less sanding between coats. Good luck, and have the icy hot/bengay/voltaren ready for your hands/elbows.
I need to redo the C-10, and when I do I'm buying a HVLP turbine and spraying it with real automotive paint. Not going to mess around with rolling tractor ever again if I can avoid it. Even getting a Wagner sprayer for this would 100% be worth it OP. You'll spend close to that in supplies and time with masking, taping, sanding, etc. |

I've thought hard about getting a no-compressor sprayer for the rest of it. What would you recommend?

Quoted: I've thought hard about getting a no-compressor sprayer for the rest of it. What would you recommend? View Quote A while ago I did some paintwork on a Lexus that I owned. There was a website (I think AutomotiveTouchup.com) that I supplied my paint code from the door card to and they sent me cans of paint prepared to factory spec. It came out pretty nice, almost indistinguishable from the factory paint (fade on the 2004). May be a good option for you. Your first can is on me if you decide to go that route. I applaud your effort and grit. Good luck and waiting to see your final results. |

I will try to do the second coat on the roof and the first coat on the hood this week.

My experience with plastic bumpers (guessing plastic...)
Hair dryer to heat up and push back out, worked twice on kids cars. Yes, there are clips in there, should reattach fine if they not damaged. |

View Quote I did the same with a heat gun (oddly enough, to a Corolla) Just be careful if using one as opposed to a hair dryer. They can melt and burn the plastic easily. |

I put a coat of paint on the hood and the second coat of paint on the roof. I’m currently sitting in the car wash waiting for it to dry a bit before I head home.
The cops showed up to take a look at me, but no drama. Photos to follow. |

Yes, I have one and used it, will continue to use for future sandings on the car

About dusk a neighbor up the street came and rang my doorbell.
"dude, did you paint your car?" "Yup, with a roller." "looks badass, like a military vehicle. You should come over for a beer" "tomorrow" He's been home all day and watching me with increasing curiosity |
