Everything ive looked at is wayyyy over priced by my standards,.
Looked at a 2012 Chevy Colorado , short bed, short cab, 4x4 , 94k , looked ok, paint was rough. They are asking 13,900 for it. When I stopped and first looked at it (before knowing the price), I guesstamated around 7-8k. Boy was I way off. And honestly, I feel its only worth around that.. While I do expect to pay what something is worth , I just dont feel the prices im seeing are what a vehicle is truly worth. oh well. |

Still coming off the '08 gas spike and the cash for clunkers.
Cars are depreciating but trucks and suvs lost a big chunk of used market capacity during those years. Using GM as an example there were almost 2x the number of 1500's produced during the 99-06 model year as 07-13. Less available drives up demand for the rest. |
|
[#2]
When a new one is 30-40 grand, used one's retain more of their original price, especially if they are in demand.

Tons of cars scrapped due to the hurricane. Could that have caused a spike in your area?

Depends I guess. it looks clean. If your interested in selling, lemme know. Miles, motor, condition and more importantly what state you in. lol.

Get used to it. I don't see it changing anytime soon. It sucks, I used to save and make decent cash buying, fixing, selling them. Now? Forget about it! As you stated everyone wants $10,000 + for what used to be $4000 or less.

View Quote You guys seriously need to get out to the Texas, Oklahoma Arkansas area to buy trucks. Me personally I would pay more if it was an older GMT400. I despise the changes they made in 95 2wd RCSB examples are starting to climb into near classic status and prices are on the rise |

[#13]
I feel the same way as I look at used trucks. Find myself digging through the same trucks I was looking at 15 years ago because the newer rigs are so spendy.

it's not really the lack of production in those years
it's the fact that money is FREE. 6 to 7 year loans, low interest rates and EVERYONE (and I do mean everyone) can finance it No one pays 50k cash for these new ones, they pay $500 a month same as always. no one cares what it costs, they only care about how much per month. Was getting gas a few weeks back and the car next to me had temp plates. They had expired 2 days earlier. I asked the guy if he knew they had expired (cuz it's easy to forget and dealerships SUCK). It's a new Ford Explorer. (so 50 grand probably?) Oh yeah, I went to get plates and they want $1400 (I bleieve it, Colorado is ridiculous, that's just plates, not sales tax). Why can't they just roll the plates into the loan like the taxes? think about that for a minute, he bought a new 50,000 vehicle and can't afford to plate it. He only bought it because it's $500 or so per month. Probably paying insurance monthly too. Just like healthcare, if people had to pay CASH, prices would drop. Like you, I pay cash and I refuse to pay it. If my cars are getting old, so be it, but my monthly nut stays low and i"m not trapped to $700 a month (including insurance, tags, etc) for 7 years. |

I just picked up a 2005 crew cab silverado z71 4x4 w/ 150k miles for $12k, but it is a clean good working one owner vehicle. But that price and truck are pretty common on Texas.
|
|
[#17]
I bought a 2012 silverado 4x4 4.8 extended cab with 39k on it for $18,000 in July. But it's a work truck package (vinyl floors, manual locks, manual windows). Doesn't even have a cd player, just AM/FM radio. . Thats how I like my trucks anyway. I don't need or want another $10k worth of options just to feel pampered. I feel like I got an ok deal, its a clean truck, it was cheaper by about $3k than any other trucks I had been looking at with the same options.

[#18]
I bought a loaded 2007 Suburban with 70K miles last year for ~$17K. The equivalent crew cab pickup (Chevy or GMC) was going for $10K more. Since I wasn't planning on towing a 5th wheel trailer, and I have a utility trailer for anything I wouldn't want to put inside the burb, it didn't make any sense to spend the extra $10k.
And the fact that a new Suburban with the same options was almost $70k is just insane. |

I have been looking at 2500 Sierras & Silverados 04-07. Clean one owner with 90-100K miles are $15-18K. This is in NC/SC

I've been selling cars for almost 14 years. Used vehicle values are higher now than they have ever been. One of my buddies has a 2015 GMC Canyon Crew SLE with 78500 miles on it. The GMC dealer he bought it from just offered him 22500 on trade. That to me is crazy.
We did get a notice here that NADA is going to be raising values pretty much across the board for the next few months because of the damage in texas. I think there was something like 800,000 cars under water. Those have to be replaced somehow. We are already, actually for the last two weeks, seeing dealers like carmaxx that have stores in the south paying big money at the auctions for used cars because they have to refill their lots. It's not going to change anytime soon either. The only good thing is that newer vehicles, every make, are made so much better than they were 10 years ago. |

Bad part for me is motorcycles are extremely soft in my area right now (probably everywhere). I have a very low miles (15k) 2004 Hayabusa for sale right now for $4500. Lots of extras, and pretty much zero bites. Sometimes the market can just be unkind.

Be mindful that in the next few months the market will be <ahem>flooded<ahem> with vehicles from Florida and Texas. I've heard that some states allow transfer of salvage vehicles from out of state to be retitled in their state with a normal title.
Buyer beware if shopping out of state. |

Used Truck Prices are crazy... View Quote Last time I bought a truck was 2005 and I used my BIL Ford employee discount plan which is good but not spectacular, 1 or 2 year old trucks cost more than new ones. The near new used market really takes advantage of people that don't have the credit to buy new. |

$6500-8500 as EVERYBODY wants one. I got offered $8000 for mine last month, some dude ran up to me in the parking lot begging me to sell it to him. Mine has 250k and I just put a brand new GM L31 crate engine in it. My old engine was original and was good enough, but GM has discounted the L31 to $1900!!! with a 3 yr warranty so I had to do it and.... I made the decision to keep this truck on the road for another 10 years and say fuck you to having to buy a new $40,000 pick up trucks. I'm keeping my 96! https://scontent-dft4-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/13412044_1235479493142944_3926939773476822476_o.jpg?oh=faf4c312fe2633133b97aa6b9a3cc675&oe=5A7AA7AB OP as said above 1. 2010+ we saw "hidden" inflation that basically took every car above $30,000 regardless of what it was 2. anything built from 2008 on has been financed to the moon and manufacturer's know this so prices go up 3. also buyers appearantly want "i-Everything" on their cars so the options loaded onto them have skyrocketed the prices cause that tech aint cheap 4. govt mandates for MPG and worse SAFETY bullshit have increased the prices cause again R&D ain't free So what you expected to pay from a 1990s-mid 2000's mental price range, needs to have $5000-10,000 added to it for adjusment based on the above mentioned items. This is why you are seeing MANY MANY people like myself and others who've posted in this thread say "fuck it" and instead of paying $40,000 for a new car or truck that actually is not any more capable of a vehicle that what was built in the 1990's btw, and have just "restored" a 1990's or early 2000's truck. If you want a cheap truck get a 2003-2006 Silverado or Sierra, with around 150k miles for $8000-10,000 with minimal rust. No fucking way should you be looking at a Colorado. Also you need to get the fuck out of WV when looking at cars. Search in the big cities in Ohio and Tennessee as prices will be cheaper and supply will be greater. View Quote |

It gets even worse, try shopping for an older 5.9 Cummins or a 7.3 Powerstroke!
Last year I saw a 7.3 at a dealer with over 220k miles and they were asking $22000! I also saw a 12v Cummins with over 740,000 miles on CL for $14-15k! ETA: This thread makes me want an early 90's TBI Chevy truck again |

I kinda lucked out on mine, and I plan to keep it a good long while. Motor is still strong, trans still works, when they go, I'll replace them and keep running it, or give it to one of the kids when I can pull off a upgrade. Newest add on, I was hoping to avoid water coming in with the windows cracked. Being a victim of divorce, I picked it up from a buy here pay here lot, it had 18xk on it and it's around 210k now. I've thrown this and that's at it, and maintained it well. New tires, brakes etc. I'm giving about 9 for it. I'm almost done on the note. Trucks are common here so they aren't too terribly pricey, unless it's diesel. Everyone wants a diesel for some reason.
