I've got a donor 2001 5.3/4l60e 4x4 Tahoe, and I'd like to swap the 5.3 into my 1985 K5 Blazer but I can't decide if I'd be better off sticking with the 700r4 the K5 has or swapping the 4l60e in with it.

The 700r4 would need some work to get the TV cable hooked up, but wouldn't need a T case adapter/VSS or possible crossmember/driveshaft mods like the 4l60e would require.

I know the 700r4 was driving fine, I haven't got the Tahoe running yet so I don't know much  about the 4l60e, but it was driving until an electronic issue made the PO park it, it has 150k or so miles on it.

That's an answer to a question that wasn't posed.

Are you planning on any other mods to the Blazer?

I'd use the 700 and sell the 60. If the 700 craps out use the cash from the sale to partially fund a solid 700 build.

It's currently all stock besides some emissions deleting, I will need all new exhaust. At some point it will probably get a 2-4" lift and some 33's or so. Nothing crazy. I'm a little "monetarily challenged", so at this point just getting it swapped and back on the road would be plenty!

It's been sitting for a few years ever since I thought I would tear it down and patch all the little rust spots and then got busy with kids and work.

Maybe I've just never had a good one...but I can't imagine willingly putting a 4L60E in anything.

Especially if it's got over 100k on it.

I am running 3 700R4 trans, two are built.  The TVSS cable linkage is an extremely simple part.  You can just buy a $15 dollar bolt on part for a carb and either mod it to use, or use it to get the geometry down to make your own adapter.  There are a lot of expensive and unnecessary bullshit adapters on the market looking for a sucker.

I have abused a transpack and have this valve body, they are solid kits.  If your 700R4 has significant mileage on it, get ahead of it while it is out.  See below.

They do seem to go out a lot at 150-175k miles or so, but the 700r4 currently in the K5 and the 4l60e in the donor are basically the same transmission mechanically so that's not really a concern in this case. I definently want OD for this vehicle and I hate to hunt down and pay for a 4l80e when I have these 2 on hand. I got lucky and scored the donor Tahoe VERY cheap!

Thanks for the info, I will take all the input I can get on this project!

The 700r4 is somewhere over 100k miles, 130-140k probably, it's been so long since I last drove it I don't remember for sure. It was still holding, but I did plan to upgrade it a little if I use it.

I have a 700 in use in a half ton truck that has acted stupid since I put it in.

Do you know enough about them to try to diagnose issues?

They are the same transmission as far as quality and durability.

I'd run the 4l60e simply because it already has the LS style bell housing and stuff. You'd need to adapt all of that over for the 700. Also you have the electronic control wiring harness already as part of the engines harness.

For a regularly driven street driven it is an incorrect answer.

It will NOT be getting a manual for sure, I get more than enough manual trans time in around the farm, 2 Chevy's with SM465's, my recently acquired 2nd gen Cummins with the NV5600, not to mention the various 10 speed semi's and tandems. I am wanting this to be a fun/backup vehicle for the family, something the wife will enjoy too, she really likes K5's and partially talked me into getting it in the first place back when we were still dating.

Not to mention all the extra work of gathering and installing all the clutch parts...

Yeah my family (my dad, grandpa, and myself all farm together) has an 83 K30 and a 91 K2500 with this setup and it's far from ideal, but useable for sure.

That is also not an option

I do have an extra TH400, but I need OD and a lockup converter in this vehicle for sure. 25 mile drive each way to nearest town with stores and restaurants!

I've been thinking of doing the same thing my square body Suburban. I have a newly rebuilt 700R4 from Bowtie Overdrives, so I'd rather use it if I can.

Well I know you can, I just can't decide which is the better route in my case. Having a freshly built one would make me lean even more towards doing using the 700r4, mine could still be original as far as I know.

I like that idea a little better for a suburban!

I have always wanted to a Cummins swap in a Squarebody K30 Crew Cab or K20 Suburban, still hope to someday...

They sure can be, although last time I looked there were a few 12 and 24v's for around $1000 on CL, which isn't bad. Some whole wrecked trucks for a little more.
