There is a toilet in another spot and a couple blue coolers in this trail system.  People use them as landmarks and trail names. Lots of people call that trail the kitchen sink trail (I know it’s a bath sink), there is shitter camp, and the blue cooler loops.

Too funny.

There's a trail up in MI that has a bench seat right on the side of the trail.
Great place to stop for a cold drink and shoot the shit breeze.

Buddy with a GSA called me about noon and wanted to go riding,  we were out in the Rubicon area and he had never been near it so we went and took a quick look at the start of the trail.

Sunday started out awesome,
What could go wrong, right?

About 1500’ later visibility started to get poor

Hard to tell from the pic but it was snowing HARD at this point, stiff wind anytime you were out of the trees, trail getting very hard to follow.
After this point it was survival mode.

All back together. Got to ride it Saturday at a local private track. Had lots of fun.

Thinking I need to get a dual sport trail bike this off season to get more riding in between motocross weekends.

I'm thinking more like used KLX/WRR/DRZ etc. If I'm dropping $9k+ on a new bike it's gonna be another new 450.

Buy a 450, uncork it and throw a get ecu on it and you will have a plated 450 that will do about anything. Or do what I did and buy a 501.

The drz/wr/lox’s are pretty gutless. If you live in a cool state where you can plate anything get a used 300.

Yeah, but $$$. Like I said, if I'm dropping serious money it's gonna be on another new 450 MX bike. I need a beater daily rider.

You can single track them, gravel grind, or rip on the highway.

Me on the 250L this summer.  That would be more than enough power for me.    I would think cheaper than the 450 too.

Your Kawi looks great.

I'm unconvinced about KTM and Husky.  I think they offer bikes that are different and really have the enduro riders in mind.  But I hear so many mixed reviews on reliability, parts availability, and maintenance.  Plus they're so darned expensive.  It's tiring that everything mechanical just keeps going up and up and up like we're all made out of money.  I like companies that try to keep it simple and keep the prices down.

But that being said, if I had a bunch of money I'd probably be all over a Husky.  They call to me.  LOL.

A 250 ktm/husky/beta is going to be a ton lighter and make a bunch more power then a crf/wrr/klx/drz.  Look at the specs and compare them it’s pretty shocking.  The husky/ktm is almost 100lbs lighter then the crf and will make over 10 hp more stock.  You can’t shave 100lbs and gain 10hp for the price difference between the two.

Maintenance on my 501 is change oil and filter every 30 hours. Not a big deal. It’s an hour job or so if you aren’t in a hurry.  If you wait till the new model years are being released you can get a last years model for a pretty good price considering what you get.  2019 250s are going for about $7500 right now.

I've had 2 KTMs and an Italian Husqvarna. They were solid bikes. Dealer network isn't as good, but with the internet that's not a huge deal. Some parts are more expensive than a Japanese bike and others are about the same. I'm not against buying them again, it's just for MX I have been a bigger fan of Honda and Kawasaki due to the better suspension and overall feel of the bike. For a trail / dual sport I just want a cheap beater that is reliable. Used KLX250s are all over local listings for $2500 or less.

I've considered them but want something a little more off road and east coast single track friendly than highway friendly. My buddy has an early 90's DR350 that's an absolute tank of a bike. Crazy reliable and surprisingly decent off road. I used to ride my dad's 80's XT350 as well back when I was a teenager and had a lot of fun on that too.

In a perfect world I'd just have a plated FI 450, but I'm gonna be a total cheap ass on this.

Maybe a used, good deal someone needs to sell bad WR?  Or sounds like you're set on a CRF, eh?  I don't think you could go wrong with either.  A DR would probably be cheaper.  I actually don't hear a lot about KLX's....  I see them and I think they are a good value.  But I don't hear much about people riding them.  I'm still learning though.

I hear ya.  And yeah, 7500 is not bad in comparison to other new bikes.  And I really like the Huskys.  Yours is sweet.  It's weird though, I live near a pretty big city and I don't even think there is a Husky dealer in Milwaukee.  I have two dealerships near me.  One about a half hour the other about 45- one hour and they are both Jap bike oriented.   It does carry some weight.  I tried to look up where the nearest husky dealership is and I don't even know of one came up for my state.  I do think there is a KTM dealer someone near Milwaukee......

Anyways...  I'm just talking.  I don't have anywhere near that kind of money and the only way I will is if I win the lottery.   The only thing I'll be able to afford is a 1k dollar beater hopefully by next summer.  So I'm betting it's going to be a kawi or suzuki.  LORD willing.  I keep going back and forth if I need it to be a dirt bike or dual sport.  Cuz I have a few friends with large yards and I might just want to ride off road.  I like the idea of the lighter more off road oriented bikes.  But then again, if I could ride on the road I can ride around my subdivision for fun and be legal.  Although I could probably do it illegally and not be a big deal but for some reason that doesn't sit right with me.

ANYWAYS.....  I do like how the KTM and Husky are lighter bikes.  Generally speaking.

Look for a plated xr 250 or 400 in your price range then. They are nothing special but they do it all and they run forever.

My neighbor just sold a plated dr 350 for $1k.

Had to tow my buddy's "run forever" XR400 about 35 miles back to camp with my overweight and underpowered "gutless" WRR last weekend. Not the first time I've had to tow an XR out of the desert with it either.

Stopped for the only cell service for miles.

He left early for home as he couldn't get it running after several hours of trouble-shooting.

The other Honda with us, CRF450X with a newly rebuilt engine, was puking oil out the air-box by the time we got back to camp and left for home early.

Meanwhile, the WRR blasted through another 103 miles of desert off-road riding the following day with nary a hiccup.

18,000 miles of only gas, oil and filter changes, air filter changes, tires, chain and sprockets, 1 battery, 1 after market turn signal and bent handle bars done in by a dirt nap. I ride this bike HARD in some pretty unforgiving terrain.

There's more to a good bike than simply weight to HP ratio.

I’m betting the xr was quite a bit older then your blue whale.

There may be more to a good bike then weight and horsepower, but those are the only two numbers that matter.

That must've been a fun tow.  LOL.  That's a long way to tow someone even on flat ground.  LOL.

I'm not sure your post is proof that yamahas are better than Hondas.  I mean someone else might have the same story but flip flopped.   "I had to pull my friends Yamaha out with my Honda", so to speak.  Although what do I know.  Maybe it never happens that way. There's no doubt Yamaha's have a good reputation.  But it seems like all 4 jap brands seem to do pretty well with quality and reliability.  Maybe some are better than others.

Yup.
If you're going to drop that kind of coin on that kind of dual sport it might as well be a KTM or a Husqvarna..or GasGas.

It was in response to “WRs are pretty gutless” and “Hondas run forever”, but now that you mention it, Yamahas are better.

That was an easy tow.  The “fun” tow was an XR600 about 15 miles through sand wash and rocks in 1st and 2nd gear.

Gutless blue whale got the job done though as always.

Here’s a gutless blue whale pic from today.

The XR didn’t need towed thankfully.

Nah, the 450L has its place. KTM EXC-F /husky FE(s) is great if you want a dirt bike with a license plate. Actually dual sport one in stock form and you’ll wish you bought that CRF450L every time you’re cruising on pavement. The Honda has better manners on the street, yet still an adequate dirt bike.

Aaaaaah.  Gotcha.  Yeah, I've got no brand allegiance at this point.  Seems like all 4 of the Jap bikes are really good.  I mean they all might have their upsides and downsides but overall.....   I know some people like some over others and nothing wrong with that.  I'm a musician so I like how Yamaha makes musical instruments too and the symbol are tuners....   But they do seem like they get a bit more money for them than Kawi and Suzi, in general.  Although used I see  TTR 125's at a comparable price point to any other bike of similar size.   Maybe a bit more?  I've seen like 2 or 3 this summer at exactly 1500.   In good shape.  Seems like the go to price point for them.  LOL.

There are numerous threads on KTM Talk, ADV Rider and Thumper Talk that say otherwise.

With due respect, I’m not forming my opinion based on threads on the internet. I own a 500 EXC-F and have ridden the 450L. The Honda has more components that are more intentionally “street” than the KTM. Seat, headlight, tail light, balancing of the crank shaft, dampened sprockets, maintenance intervals, etc.

If you made me pick one of the two (stock) bikes to take on any amount of paved road it would be the Honda. It vibrates less and feels more solid.

EXC-F/FE(s) can be a good dual sport but you have to sink some coin into it to make it worthy of the street half. The 450L is just not the same.

My son's (14yo) 3rd cross country race (hare scramble) was last weekend.  I ride with him on Saturday (practice day) and he races on Sunday.  We are having an awesome time!

Here is is a little clip of him on a hill climb during his race yesterday.

Boy broke his arm back at the beginning of Sept. he finally got cleared to ride again. So we went down to The Shoals MX in South Carolina, to do some training with Andrew Matusek and Jared Lesh. Had a great time, the facility is going to be awesome when it gets finished in 2020. 30sih camper hook ups, 4-5 tracks of different materials. Oweners were great people too. Second day of training had 2 more AMA pro's show up. So 4 AMA guys and 5 kids training. It was a pretty good ratio. 6hrs Saturday and 6hrs Sunday.

Didn’t matter where you were it was brutally muddy.  The pro class had to go after the quads got to rip on it for an hour too.

Spent my entire childhood growing up at the MX track.  After a ten year break from the sport, I've been back at it for three months now.

Got her deleted and tuned.

I used a slavens kit to delete the emissions shit, cut out the reeds, added a jd tuner, and put on a ti/carbon fmf slip on.

She rips now, makes my 300 feel underpowered.

Also cleaned up the rear fender.
