There is no doubt in my mind that I will be deployed next year. However, knowing my battalion we won't be issued anything but M16 A3 with iron sights. I would very much like to bring my Eotech an BUIS but I wonder if I would be allowed to attach my personal equipment. Also, for urban operations (more than likely I'll be on convoy security) what range do you zero at?

Any input would be helpful.

a 300M BZO has never failed me

I don't know about your unit specifically, but it seemed like every joe I saw had some type of personal bling hanging off his rifle.

You have been issued a rifle with a Safe-Semi-Auto trigger group and no flat top?

The M16A3 is a fully-automatic variant of the M16A2, but it was only issued within the US Navy.

Sorry! I was being a smartass, I assumed you had an M16A4 but were using civilian terminology! Nice gun you got there!

Have you thought about a compact ACOG?

Man, we had guys with every bell and whistle known to mankind hanging off of their shit, as long as it didn't hinder your performance the chain of command didn't really give a shit.
Some guys replaced their M68s with EOTECHs and Trijicons that they purchased before we deployed, and borelighted them and zeroed at 25m.

I'm talking about a Surefire on one side, a Streamlight on the other, a PEQ 2 on top, bipod and forward grip w/Laser underneath. It was ridiculous.

I know what you mean. As an AR noobie I did the same thing. All I'm looking to add is the Eotech. Since my team's main function is going to be convoy security I figure most of the action is going to be on the move so my eotech would be much easier to use than an Acog or iron sights.

I just hope that I'll be allowed to use and zero it.

I zero'd my Aimpoint at 25m right after I zero'd my mechanical sights and it never failed me.

Save your money. If anything try and get a CCO but dont spend money on anything nice. Your only going to be shooting at non compliant drivers on the road, very few firefights if any on convoy escorts. ANd its guarenteed to get banged up in the humvee.

I've seen SeaBees carrying M16A1s, M16A2s, M16A3s (in carry handle and flattop configuration), M16A4s, M4s, M4A1s, and Colt 727s. Plus amorer-level combinations of all of those. The M16A1 with an A2 barrel is common. You should see their vehicles! Some "Mad Max" stuff out there.

As for an optic, a Comp ACOG would be a good choice for an A2, but you'll likely be mounted a lot, so I'd say EO-Tech. With the right mounts, you could easily swap between the two on a flattop.

Just wait till u get in theater. Ive been here a month and my unit is ordering Aimpoints for everyone. Dont spend your money till u find out that you are deffinatly not getting issued any optics.

Thanks for the imput everyone. To clear up a few things, I've always trainned with an M16A3 with flattop. I won't need to buy an Eotech since I already have one on my AR. That's why I'm thinking about using it.

I've already been deployed once (didn't make it to the sand, though) and thought that since I'll probably make it to the sand this time I bought the 552 for myself. I love it so I might aswell use it for what it was intended for. Just not sure if I'll be allowed.

That completely up to your CO.

I used a Aimpoint M2 while over there and it gave very good service.

I suggest you save your money on "tactical" type gear till u get there. The PX carrys most that you will need (no dots tho) and you can order from the States anything else u need and get it within 2 weeks.

Focus on bringing comfort items mainly , just do not over do it.
You going to be carrying so much shit already and moving a lot till u settle in. The fewer sea bags to tote the better.

90percent of what I took I ether did not use or could have gotten in theater.

When my unit was getting RFI in Kuwiat, they gave us some M68s, I wasent allowed to have one because I "wont be on guard duty as much as the soldiers"

They wouldnt let me bring my own Comp M2 either.

When we got to Iraq, we had to go to a range. They told us that we couldnt use the scopes because the range was only a 25m range.

Last month they told us tjhat we had to turn in the scopes because " WE dont want anyone losing them"

Welcome to COSCOM units.

IM me, I maybe able to help with your CO.

Just opinion, I would go with an M68 zeroed at 25m, and a spare battery in the kit.
