Steganos safe and then set up a portable safe on your USB drive.
Portable safe is a stand alone but the setup of the drive safe is done with the PC. Thats what I use for my backup for the checkbook.

But is it free??

I have found Folder Lock, which seems cool. Locks, encrypts, then HIDES the folder and Misrepresents the room left so it appears that there is nothing there.
