To find ones that have been installed:
Get a decent Virus Scanner.
Get ad-aware, and spybot S&D, hijaack this!.

To prevent them from being installed:
Limit access to your computer, by enabling the multi-user mode. This means that you will need to enter a username and password in order to log into the computer. (Ie, stranger won't be able to walk up and install spyware in the first place).
Enable a screen saver with password lock.
Every once in a while, check to make sure there are no unknown connectors in between your keyboard and the computer. Also look for strange USB devices you don't remember.
