Is it the computer or the connection slowing down?  If it's the connection, it could be your modem or phone line.  IF there's any noise on the line, like for example you hear clicking every so often or there's any background noise, that will slowdown your connection.  Call waiting is another common problem.  Also, I've seen quite a few modems that do exactly what you describe.  They work fine until one day when they get hit with a surge from a thunderstorm then after they seem to work nearly 100% for a short time and slowly spiral downward the longer they stay connected.z
