Do you guys turn your computer off during the day when your not using it? Or do you just stand by? Are there any security or other issues in leaving it on standby? or hibernation?

My desktop is on 24/7.

Only when I have to move it.

Shut it down whenever I expect to be out of the house for an hour or more, and when I go to bed...

In all the years, I've never had sleep or standby work right...either it wont wake up, or there are all sorts of driver issues when it comes back.

my tower is always on, laptop is off unless i'm using it.

Link Posted: 8/26/2010 7:14:51 PM EDT
Tower and laptop are both turned off when not in use for more than an hour....

I don't even log out

if I turn my computer off, I might miss something in GD
Link Posted: 8/26/2010 7:37:37 PM EDT
Laptop and rarely.
Link Posted: 8/26/2010 7:57:45 PM EDT
My computer sleeps for about 20 hours of the day.
Link Posted: 8/26/2010 11:07:57 PM EDT
nope.I actually turn off or "shut down" my computer maybe once a month. Otherwise it just goes into "sleep" mode whenever im not using it for more than 20 min... just hit the spacebar and im back in business - less than 5 seconds.

Usually, no.

So far: 2wks 20hrs 54mins 40secs

Never.
Link Posted: 8/27/2010 4:50:47 AM EDT
I shut down and unplug them during a bad lightening storm, otherwise they are on 24/7.
Link Posted: 8/27/2010 5:40:48 AM EDT
I turn off my desktop before bed or if I leave somewhere
Link Posted: 8/27/2010 5:44:48 AM EDT
My desktop pc is on 24/7 unless it gets an update the requires a reboot.

Work laptop used to stay on 24/7 but I was having problems with web meetings (my machines would slow down so much that it affected the presentations) so after I contacted my helpdesk they advised that I reboot at least once every 4 or 5 days.

My personal laptop stays off unless I'm using it.

I don't use sleep or standby ever. Microsoft never got that right, and still hasn't. When some program crashes upon wake, it's reboot time anyway.

Turn all my laptops off when I am not using them. "Being on wear and tear" on them is a lot higher than a desktop.

I leave my main home desktop on most of the time, unless I am going to be away from _all_ computers. But, I am an IT guy and never really check out from work, and my home computer is an important springboard to get into some systems and "check from the outside", etc.

My work computer stays on all the time for similar reasons. (Plus, the patching / virus updates happen at night)

I restart my computers often though.

A large well cooled desktop computer won't age much faster if it's running than if it's not. There's a few spots where there is additional risk, like hard drives spinning and fans going all the time. Otherwise, the hardware is often obsolete long before it fails.

It does cost a bit in electricity, but I have other stuff on that costs quite a bit more that I would need to worry about first. (My PC does somewhere between $5 and $25 per month in electricity.

I didn't use sleep or standby (never worked right) until I got the mac laptop. Now, I use it all the time.

My laptop only gets put into sleep mode when moving from one location to another (i.e. commuting to work). I reboot once every week or two...

My Desktop computer (Linux) is on 24/7 - file server for my household.

Have you tried Windows 7?

Are you kidding? If I turned my home PC off I wouldn't be able to post this right now!

I remote home a lot (more so now that work started blocking sites like arfcom.

My mind was blown when I found out it works in 7. Wakes up faster than my monitors power up too.
Used to be 24/7 before win7 made it work. Sleep after 45 minutes, hibernate after 12
Link Posted: 8/27/2010 12:31:07 PM EDT
Always turned off when not using it. Never really home much now, but either way, it is off unless I'm coming back to it within a couple hours. A silly old way of operating IMO by leaving them on.
Link Posted: 8/27/2010 6:00:49 PM EDT
standby works fine for me.
Link Posted: 8/27/2010 6:08:59 PM EDT
I always just close the lid on my laptop to put it to sleep. Open it up and I'm back in business in seconds.

Or quality hardware/quality 3rd party drivers?

Link Posted: 8/27/2010 7:49:53 PM EDT
I turned my primary tower off when I moved into this house.
That was in 2005.

only had an issue with sleep twice that I remember on my two XP desktops, and once was due to a power outage. I usually used hibernate though and not sleep
hibernate only gave me an issue when I upgraded to more than 1GB of ram but the hotfix fixed that http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=909095

Only time my desktop gets rebooted is if I lose power, need to switch kernels, or I locked it up playing games in WINE.
Link Posted: 8/29/2010 7:09:02 AM EDT
I haven't turned my desktop off in weeks, at least since I got back from Nebraska. Laptop stays asleep unless it's in use.
Link Posted: 8/29/2010 7:38:28 PM EDT
Desktop is always on, as it holds the drive that all the media players in the house pull content from. Even apart from that, a machine running with the monitors powered down takes barely any power, and you put far more wear and tear on your PSU, hard drives and fans constantly spinning them up/down as opposed to leaving them running. I let my laptop sleep, but I hardly ever use it.

Wife's laptop is in sleep mode when it's not being used. Tower is on 24/7 - the monitor goes to screensaver after 5 minutes, goes to black after 10 min.

My systems run 25/8/366, ladies.
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 6:41:34 AM EDT
Mac Mini - on 24/7 (for TV recording/iTunes streaming)
Server - 24/7 (e-mail/file serving)
Desktop PC - off when not in use otherwise the room gets too hot!!
Laptops - Sleep/Hibernate or Off when not in use
Link Posted: 9/9/2010 6:44:06 AM EDT
No. It runs 24/7 365.

Why would you pay to heat up your computer room with idling computers, then pay to run an air conditioner to keep them cool?

Also, fans wear out and my machine has 6 fans. These suck in dirt and dust at an alarming rate.

Also also, when your machine is on it is vulnerable to hacking and once hacked could be part of a botnet spamming the world 24/7.

Turn them off, seriously.

Are you talking about work computer or personal computer?

Personal computer I leaved turned on during the day. I just turn off the monitor. There are no security issues as my account is password protected. It gets turned off at night because it is loud and in the same room as where I sleep

My work computer stays on 24x7 during the week and turned off on the weekends. My monitors on my work computer are also turned off when I go home
