My wife wants a point a shoot for her purse and I'm looking at the Powershot 620.  She has a 40D and a 30D Cannon (which I know little about), but doesn't want something as heavy and bulky. Is there any point and shoot cameras out there that are better than a camera phones for quick pictures where you don't want to lug out a bigger camera and lens?

I had a Canon S100 & a Panasonic ZS50, picture quality in both cameras was quite good, but their were not durable.

Canon fixed my S100 once, and it went out again on the same thing 2 years later.

My Panasonic SZ50 lasted 2 years, and it still had 1 year left on the warranty, Panason repair claimed I abused the camera, I certainly used it, but not abuse.

So if you buy one of those premiums P&S cameras, "buyer be where."

As someone that loves their Nikon DSLRs (D40, D80, D300s, D800, D7200), I have to say that you couldn't give me a Nikon P&S once I had tried the turd known as the P7800.

Don't forget about the Lumix LX100, it might be a few years old but it is still a top performer. It was overshadowed by the RX100 variants, but it is an excellent camera.

The Sony RX100 series is great.  I have the RX100 II, and like it a lot.  Very handy, when I don't want to carry a full DSLR kit.

If budget wasn't an issue, I'd look at the Sony RX100 V as that is a powerhouse of a little camera.  They have a 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 lens with Zeiss glass that is really sharp.  While it's not perfect for everything since it's not super wide, or super long, it has the zoom range that 90% of folks want for general stuff.

Barring that, I'd look at the Olympus OMD-EM10MKIII which comes with a 14-42mm lens kit and you can get a 40-150mm plus extras like SD cards and whatnot for the same price.

Both are solid.  If you can live with the lens on the RX100, you can't beat it in a P&S right now.

I have the first RX-100.  One of the main reasons I bought it was the ability to shoot in RAW.  If I pixel peep, I find it to have a lot more noise than a DSLR.  The newer version may be better.  It is handier than a DSLR, though.

We have an Olympus XZ-2 that we bought on close-out.  I think they are on the XZ-10 now.

It takes GREAT pictures, has easy to access controls for all the manual functions, all around sturdy.

The thing that sold me on it was the quality of the macro.  We have gotten right in on very small insects and flowers and had amazing pictures without the distortion that we saw in other cameras.

@ajroyer

Can you give me an example of this distortion, and another example without it?

I'm having a hard time figuring out what you're talking about here. I shoot a lot of macro stuff.

When I was in the store testing the cameras, the other point and shoots had a kind of fish bowl effect around the edges.  I zoomed in on some UPC labels and the edges of the lines curved.  With the Olympus, I could get right on it (about 1 cm is what they claim, and it's about right).  All the lines stayed straight and true.

Since then, we have taken lots of close ups of garden insects as well as really close pics of our bees and the beehives/comb/brood.

I used to upload to photobucket and link pics, but I heard that they changed their rules.  I wish that the AR-15 server could host pics.  It would be so much easier!

For a thousand bucks though, it's going against a high bar set by Sony.  Could be good, but they're going to have to hit that ball really hard to get it playable.
