I have a good friend that posts pictures that make me think that sometimes. I just use it to figure out what he's doing differently from me, so I can learn.

That day I was in a group of 6 really good photographers (1 from ARF, 5 from Instagram). It was kinda like an unspoken competition - made me concentrate on what I was shooting and try new things with processing.

Well, today was the Hillsboro airshow.  I didn't attend, but was able to see them from my house and nearby field.

I can't compete with most of the photos in here, but for your amusement:

They're cropped pretty heavily.

A guy I shoot with a lot has one. We call it the Hubble telescope.  Lol. He even uses teleconverters on it occasionally.

Good God. And here I am debating on a 1.7 or 2.0 on my 200-500

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. Guess I'll have to lay down some scratch for a prime first.

Your last three shots posted have been truly spectacular.  Not to take away anything from your previous ones, but I am jealous and impressed with what you have put up recently!

That extra stop of aperture means you can add a 1.4x and have what is basically a 600 f/4. Add a 2x, and you get an 800 f/5.6 and with my nikon at least, the quality loss isn't an issue since it's a high quality prime.

If you're really crazy, you can mod your teleconverter to allow you to stack them

If I did the math right, this is a 1680 mm equivalent focal length.

400mm > 2x (800) > 1.4x (1120) > D500 - 1.5x crop factor (1680)

Canon makes a 200-400 with a built in 1.4 converter.  It's supposed to be the cats meow, but damn, they are proud of it.

I've seen the occasional 300 f2.8 on craigslist from time to time.  I've been very tempted.

Same guy that has the 600mm has the 200-400 with the internal 1.4x. He loves it- it's his go-to lens.

Lol lucky in what way? That I got the shot?

My wife said it was funny watching the five photographers in my group dance around each other during the show.

So yeah, I guess I'm luck I got any shot

I could say the same about you and those aurora shots. Well done!

Just getting back in to photography.  The last camera I had was a Canon EOS3 and only shot B&W.  I'm learning digital and LR/PS as fast as I can and loving every minute of it.

I was right across the street with a 35mm lens.  The pano was 5 pictures but probably could have been done with 3.  I figured more is better.

I'm just getting back in to photography and only have 3 lenses...  A 35, 50 and a 85mm lens.  I want the Nikon 70-200mm 2.8E next.  $$$$$ though.
