This is a composite of two exposures, one for the Moon and Mars, and the other for the cloud cover.  Mars isn't sharp for a couple of reasons, the cloud cover and being at the very edge of the performance limit of my 70-300 AF-D.  Mars is slightly enlarged, and the cloud exposure slightly reduced to mitigate chromatic aberration from the overexposure.  I also had to undistort Mars, to return it to a round shape, as there seemed to be comatic distortion in the Mars/Moon exposure.

Oh, and it's all .jpg, and not just any .jpg, but .jpg S, because I forgot to reset from some time lapse B-roll stuff I was doing earlier in the week.

Maybe I can try again in another month?

Nice job. Well done on the compositing.

...but I cannot suffer any further use of JPEG. How are you not hanging your head in shame? Shame, I say!

I'm like Mr Magoo out there at night.  And my frontcountry tripod is taller than I am without the center column extended, so I didn't notice the top LCD that would have told me of my oversight.

Like I said, maybe I've got another shot at it in another month?  Maybe not?

I didn't even download the images when I came back inside that night.  I only saw them the next day, noticed the problem, but by then the Moon had just kept on truckin' without any regard for the pace at which I work.  Kind of inconsiderate, if you ask me.

I only had it in .jpg because I was rolling off thousands of timelapse photos of convective clouds building overhead.  No foreground to balance in the exposure, or anything like that, so stuff like that is just relegated to .jpg.

...and then I almost cried when I started to edit and realized I totally missed focus while trying to hand hold the camera steady (with 200-500mm + lens hood) in a 25mph crosswind. [sigh]

lol I was dead tired for that shoot. I was at the airport until after ten for a night engine run, didn't get back to the hotel and in bed until 1130. Then up and back out by 0330 for an 0500 photo call. I was there until mid afternoon.

you need to use [ img ] tags. you can either use the tool in the ar15 post creator, or you can copy a link to the picture with them already on it straight from imgur. pull up the picture you want to use. hover over the upper right corner, then click on the three dots. click "get share links". use the one for BBcode (forums). Copy link. Paste in ARFcom.

Looks like you were copying and pasting the address in the address bar. That's not the specific address for the picture, but rather the location of the picture in your gallery. if that makes sense....

Would it make you feel better if I told you I didn't personally take the picture? I was mostly acting as a "director" to my wife while I was driving my car.

A few of us drove across the state to cruise up Skyline Drive Saturday. We wanted to get pictures of some of our friends while driving, but my wife can't drive my car yet - not comfortable with a manual. So, I set the camera up for her before we left and gave her some pointers. I told her to tell me if there was a shot she wanted and gave her some advice on adjustments to make. This was one of her first shots! 1/50 at sunrise as we were coming around Richmond.

Santa's reindeer seem to be enjoying the snow we're getting up here.  First snow of the season in the last week, but it looks like it'll stick.
