Eventually I'm going to build an area off the barn as my office/gym, that way I have more room, and the guys that work for me can use it before or after work if they want to.

Titan T2 Rack
Titan Comp Bumpers
A few hundred pounds of cheap iron
Two Texas Power Bars
Homemade T-bar sleeve thing
Mini farmers walk handles (which was a stupid buy because there is no room to walk with them)
Loadable T handle (great buy, use it all the time)
Some random dumbbells I never use.
A few random lightweight bars
Homemade sled for sliding leg curls
Lots of random accesories like handles, clips, mats etc.

My gym !                                Was building a new custom home  in 2015 with an enclosed Porte' Co  between the garage and main house ,  --   so the fiance' at the time and I wanted to have a theatre room here --- projection screen, terraced seating, the whole bit
Being a custom, the build was taking a long time and stretching into 2016, and that spring, she decided to dump me.

I finished the house and couldnt decide to do with this space anymore, which is about 20 x 25.    -  i plopped down a few stall mats and a bench and dumbbells,  but the real goal was still to build a theatre room

The space just hung in limbo for a bit until late 2017 when i finally had the money to do it , one way or the other.

After realizing she wasnt coming back, -- the gym was on.          In another thread, i explained going with the carpet squares over mats --  If i was going in deep, i really wanted it to look nice - like a hotel gym or something, only hardcore ---  so far, the flooring has been holding up fine to dragging stuff around on it   --  was going to build a lifting platform, but i started piling up injuries and realized i wasnt going to be going hard anymore  -- half the battle in life is just showing up anyway

I have a couple of York Olympic bars, so you may wonder what the closet rod is doing on the rack

Well, this should answer it, as those of you who have had shoulder surgery probably recognize this little cable doo-hickey  --  also use the TRX bands quite a bit

Convenience won out over function, so ive been using these Bowflex D-bells -- for my uses, they work great -- went with York for the benches as i had used these at the OTC in Co Springs years ago and they are rock solid

But i have conventional dumbbells too --- LOL - because, why not  - The surfboards are there for decoration - i live in Oklahoma, but i dig that stuff     -
The Rogue clock has some built in timing functions for Tabata and Interval style workouts that is fun for doing drills on the rowing machine

I do most of my cardio on the concept 2 which is lurking around here somewhere, but im a cyclist at heart, so the Lemond spin bike was picked up cheap from a gym going out of business -- but sometimes a good chunk of time gets spent on the treadmill too - The ProForm treadmill is Sporting Goods store grade stuff, but it refuses to die !   I'd replace it in a minute if i had a good reason, but like i said, i vastly prefer the C2 and bike

My big gift from my wife was a fitness reality power cage. I also ordered a new bar, I use a standard bar because of a weight set I got during the craziness last year. My son got me a new collars, I also ordered new j cups and a dip attachments.

This is about a week ago.

Nothing specifically for Christmas, but I did recently get another set of rack-mounted plate holders. So it’s nice not having any plates laying on the ground unnecessarily taking up floor space.

I’m also gonna swing by Tractor Supply and get a single 4x6 stall mat and cut it in half. I’ve been using two sets of double up foam squares for deadlifts and rows. They work OK, but are getting pretty deformed.

Yeppers. I have that same rack and I think it’s a great value. I do plan on upgrading at some point, but it absolutely gets the job done, with only a few minor complaints that I’ve already posted about earlier.

Yeah, getting plates up off the floor is a game changer in terms of floor space and esthetics. I need to get a rack for my dumbbells. I’m just tired of them being all over the floor.

Do you currently have stall mats down, but using the additional foam squares as added protection? Or, are you using it as the primarily floor protection? Any reason not to throw down a few stall mats without cutting them? I ask because if you’re wanting it to be quieter or dropping Titan has a version of “crash pads”

I have those titan silencer pads. They work really well for stuff like log press and power cleans where you need to drop the bar sometimes and start position isn't really critical. They're really not what you want for deadlifts. They mess with the starting height too much and the pull off just feels weird for lack of a better way to describe it.

Yeah, that’s why I asked. Wasn’t sure if it was because he wanted it to be quiet and to be able to drop. I’ve seen people use them for deadlifting but they stand on a block for better starting position. Personally, I prefer just on stall mats. Being at home, I don’t even wear shoes for my deadlifts.

I am not sure -- i literally got them from a place in Oklahoma City called  Big Bob's Carpet Outlet    --    They are just commercial floor tiles originally intended for office use.   I was hesitant on how they would hold up, but i frequently roll the Bow Flex dumbbell stand around on them, (about 200 pounds and concentrated on pretty small casters )   as well as the benches with no ill effects yet after 4 years.

They are not cushy at all, so if i was lifting heavy i'd still construct a lifting deck, but those days are years behind me i'm afraid

Because the price was right and, believe it or not, it does allow me to do a few exercises that I don't have machines for. Albeit not very good at any of them.

Christmas stuff?   Well, - for me this was not specifically Christmas, but the timing coincided.   Another thread here one of the posters recommended possibly a functional trainer and linked to one from Costco for 1299$     An Inspire FTX Functional Trainer

I literally couldnt grab my wallet fast enough ---  When i put my gym together a few years back (pictured earlier in this thread) - i ran out of money pretty fast plus didnt know if i really had enough space for another large piece of equipment because i like to have plenty of walk-around room.

But i did look at functional trainers and other univeral machines from Inspire, Hoist and a couple others  -- Titan has a nice one too.   But they all seemed to be in the $2500 price range on up.   And the pictured machine sells for over 2k on amazon, so when i saw it for 1300 i had to grab it

Came in one very large box, with 6 separate smaller boxes holding the weight plates

And un-boxing it was exactly what i was afraid of -- a nightmare that took an hour in and of itself -- but everything was well protected and wrapped thoroughly

After that, assembly was pretty straightforward and took me about 2- 2.5 hours.  Wouldve been much quicker with a partner, but i did everything myself

My fear of having enough "walk around" space was unfounded  --  the footprint is modest  so the "Feng Shui" of my space is preserved --  LOL

Any reason not to throw down a few stall mats without cutting them? I ask because if you’re wanting it to be quieter or dropping Titan has a version of “crash pads”

Played around with the BenchBlok tonight and I really think I’m going to like throwing it in on my bench days!

No stall mats at all currently. There’s only the foam pads doubled up, on top of the bare garage floor. I don’t currently do any lifts that require dropping weights (though if my deadlift ever gets to a respectable weight, I suppose that might happen unintentionally ). I just want something better than the deformed foam pads I have now. The reason for cutting a single mat in half would just be due to space. Also, I made a mistake in my last post. I would be cutting a 4’x3’ mat in half, not a 4’x6’ mat. That would give me two 2’x3’ mats that I can pick up and lay down as needed.

When we get a new house, one of the absolute requirements is going to be a dedicated space for working out, whether it’s a room in the house, or just a bigger garage. When that happens, I will be building a deadlift platform that the rack can be bolted to, like many of you guys in this thread have. That’s the goal. I’m so jealous of some of your guys’ setups.

Dead lifts is not the only reason to get stall mats, i mean if you just use bumpers that would work..  BUT   I did the whole area in them for the reason of just being able to drop my weights when I am re racking anything or changing plates.  you don't have to be as carful moving your bar or anything around.  The matts will pay for them selves in just less wear and tear on your equipment and especially your concrete slab

True.

I haven’t totally put off the idea of just covering the ground around my rack in stall mats, when we get a new house. The DIY side of me just really likes the idea of building one of those platforms.

That's what I did in my gym, although you still might need a platform depending on how level your floor is. Kinda hard to setup for deadlifts when the bar keeps wanting to roll away. Been there, done that lol.

Question.

It looks like basically everyone here started with a smith machine or power rack and then started adding to it.

Is that a lesson learned from buying a stack machine and being limited? Or is it simply the best space efficient way to have legit squat functionality?

I have an 8' x 8' x 8' space in my conditioned garage to work with and I'd like to get my setup "right" the first time. I have two sons that are into sports, so I expect it will be used hard in the future.

If you were assembling your first home gym with an 8 ft cube of space, where would you start?

I'm currently eye balling this, but I'm not opposed to spending more to get a better quality, better value, made in the US option.

As your primary piece of equipment I would stay away from any sort of smith or stack machines. Actually I'd stay away from machines completely.

Given your room constraints, if I was starting out I'd get this Rogue squat stand, add spotter arms and pick up a boneyard bar plus whatever plates fit my budget.

That's going to let you do all the important lifts.

Edit: oh and add a flat bench.

I would avoid anything Marcy, it's really bare minimum build quality stuff. If you're looking for something that maximizes versatility in the smallest amount of space. This is probably the only option that's commercial grade quality https://primefitnessusa.com/hlp-plate-loaded-rack/

Problem is Prime fitness is, they're slow to give quotes, their shipping is expensive, and they've got some hidden charges.

Rep is coming out with their Ares system https://repfitness.com/pages/ares-faq

If I were you, I'd wait for the Rep system. Keep in mind, it requires separately purchasing a Rep rack with weight storage, which might make sense to buy now, and add the cable system to when it's released.

Yea, I wished it was available when I was buying stuff. I have a 6 post titan T3 rack with lat/row, and an Inspire FTX functional trainer right now. The rep setup would open up a lot of floor space for me replacing all that. But selling what I have at a lost, and having to disassemble it too might be too much a PITA.

Looking for some advice on adjustable dumbbells like the bowflex style versus a loadable dumbbell style. Anyone have some experience with the pros and cons? A concern in my mind is doing things like overhead triceps extensions, I don't want to have to worry about something busting loose and shattering on my hard melon

The bowflex ones are definitely avoid, they have plastic load bearing parts that eventually fail. There are aftermarket fixes, but that's not worth doing unless you find a really good deal used.

I think this could be the downfall with a lot of those adjustable types made primarily out of plastic. I just saw someone post yesterday that a pair of their nüobells broke and plastic pieces fell out.

Coop seems to like “power blocks” in almost all of his reviews.

For something that I may have hovering over my face, I'd go with the iron master or peppin style with the spin locks. If those loosen, they're not going to fail catastrophically and smash your grill. Having said that I've only had some cheap gold's gym adjustables in the past and wouldn't trust them at all. Others may be better.

Yeah it's definitely something I'd be worried about while doing stuff, I forgot about the spin type, I'll have to look around to see if there are any good options for those.

I started by home gym collecting fixed rubber hex dumbells as I found them in stock. Ended up with a 10-75 lbs set. I kinda regret buying them after I got my Inspire functional trainer. The costs are very comparable, and I feel like a lot of exercises on both are interchangeable. In fact, the same exercises usually feel better on the FT, as the resistance is more consistent throughout ROM.
