After particularly intense aerobic workouts (intervals with heart rate going up to 180) after cooling down, and post exercise stretching, when I sit down, there is a strong chemical odor when I breathe through my nose.  Strong enough to make me choke and cough.  It's kind of amonia like.

I don't wear fu-fu juice or use strongly scented soaps, deoderants or anything.

Any ideas where the heck that comes from?  Should I call my doctor right away?  [:)]

I feel fine (for after a workout, anyway) when it happens, other than the coughing because it gags me...

Thanks for any insight you may be able to offer.

"In general, you'll maximize your fat loss if you wait about an hour after
your workouts before eating. The exception, in my view, is when you smell
ammonia. Ammonia is essentially nitrogen, and that sensation after a workout
is a signal that you've raised your cortisol levels enough to trigger the
breakdown of amino acids by the liver (gluconeogenesis). When the body needs
energy, it metabolizes glycogen, then fat, then protein. If one isn't fast
enough, it goes down the list. But if it's going to feed on protein, you
want it to go after something other than muscle tissue. So if you smell
ammonia, you should have a protein and carbohydrate containing supplement
immediately after your workout, preferably along with a protein stimulating
supplement such as L-Leucine (whey protein is about 20-25% Leucine)".

may i suggest taking a nice relaxing shower immediately after a workout?   next time you smell something emanating from your body, wash it off!!!! who cares what in the fuck it is???

also, may i suggest keeping your personal problems to yourself?

Sounds like you may be smelling ketones- results of the process roughly outlined above. You trying to lose weight? If not a glucose containing sports drink during your workout should help to maintain Blood sugar levels so you don't start to digest proteins

I have the same thing Scottman but I thought I was imagining it cause I couldn't smell it in my cloths after workout, it seems as if the smell is coming from inside my nose. If it is my body digesting protiens then I better start eating more.

I had my wife come smell me (she REALLY loves me! [:)]) and it is definitely not "emanating."  It seems to be inside the nasal passages.  I care what it is because it makes it hard to breathe!  [:)]

ZThis is what I would suggest you look into first.

Are you diabetic?

Are you doing a low carbohydrate diet?

I've been doing this for a while. Once you've been off carbs for a while, you're body burns fat for energy all the time (provided you're getting the correct amount of protein for your lbm). Burning fat produces the keytones which smell funky. Do you have a metallic taste in your mouth too? I can tell when I haven't gotten my 40 grams of carbs per day for a couple of days because i'll start getting into ketosis and my mouth will taste metallic.
