As a recently retired 2 sport athlete in college (now pursuing a law degree while trying not to get fat) I offer you two suggestions for lifting programs, both of which I have used with great success for their respective purposes. Keep in mind I am in my early-mid 20's and these programs are moderately intense for me, which means they could kill you old people, so be careful
FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH
These programs (3 and 6 day) were designed by the recently retired head trainer at my college who is a genius and former captain of the UofMichigan hockey team and former USMC. As the title suggests, these programs are for functional (i.e. everyday useful/athletically useful) strength and stamina, and will not make you look like He-Man. If you want to look like He-Man, see the other program below.
I used the 6 day one to prep for both football and rugby. It is six days a week, it is no joke, and you will be sore. I got them from him when I was in college and when he was still there, and they are now available on the web here:

GOOD LOOKS PROGRAM
Go here and buy this. It looks cheesy but believe me the guy has put at least a dozen solid concepts into one systematic program for diet and lifting. You will see great appearance and strength results. You know all those "tips" you hear from guys in the gym, some of which are true and some of which aren't, and none of which are systematic? This guy gives you a system that makes sense and works. I did it last summer and people were asking me what I was doing.
