Is it worth it to have both rods or will the slightly smaller in diameter rimfire cover everything? I am looking at replacing the low-end cleaning rods I purchased years ago for some quality coated bore tech rods in 22, and 30 caliber. From looking on Brownells's site, bore-tech has a rimfire diameter as well as a centerfire 22 caliber rod. Is there a limitation to using the 22 rimfire rod for both? Is there a chance of damage to the rod due when used in a larger bore due to bending or am is this not the case? Basically, should I spend the $50 for a 22 rimfire and 22 centerfire rod or will the .22 rimfire rod due?

I used same rod and brush on both rimfire and centerfire rifles without any problem.

In answer to your question - you can use 1 rod for both 22 cal cleaning tasks.
Aside - in my mind, the problem with coated rods is that I would worry about damaging the coating and eventually causing problems. A 1 piece graphite cleaning rod has no coating to damage... Amazon link |

How is a cleaning rod for 22 centerfire different from a 22 rimfire?

Well, I did find it. I don't totally understand it and their math doesn't match their diameter specs.
Q: What is the difference between the 22 Rimfire and 22 Centerfire rods and can I use my Rimfire rod on my Centerfire rifle? A: The 22 RF rod is approximately 0.015” smaller in diameter to help clear ejectors and choked barrels frequently found in rimfire rifles. Yes, you can use the 22 RF rod on a 22 CF rifle without any issues. Do not use 22 Centerfire rods in Rimfire rifles. |
