So I'm planning on building a 22 Nosler on a Aero precision m4e1 builder set with a 22-26 inch WOA barrel. Just want some of y'all's thoughts? Planning on running the 60 NBT for varmints and 77-80 grain bullets for long range fun and casual local matches.

IMHO I would go with the .223 Akley Improved. It also gives .22/250 velocities and you use 223 brass. The only issue is fire forming, it wood still be cheaper than .22 Nosler. Not sure how it would do with the heavy bullets.

I've been looking into it. I really don't like the idea of fire forming brass though.

I can see that, my prairie dog rifle is an AR in standard .223 with a 25 inch Kreiger barrel. I get 50grain v-max up to 3400 fps. It is a 1 in 13 twist so I don't use anything heavier.
Have fun with the Nosler |

.224 Valkyrie would let you use longer bullets.

I use the bass pro test. If you can't find it at a bass pro shop do you really want to look for it that hard?
I don't see an advantage vs cheaper and more available ammo like .243, .260 or 6.5C. I'd also wager those rounds will be cheaper. If you're hard up to stay on a small AR platform and can afford it, go for it. |

While I agree with staying with 6.5 Creed that I already own... I'm board and I need another project.

I’m in process with my 22 Nosler build off of a LWRC Six8 receiver set.. Originally looked at the 24” WOA 8-twist but wanted something lighter and threaded so I can mount a suppressor. One of the barrels I was looking at is the Dracos Straight Jacket but they do not make it in 22 Nosler. Another option would have been to buy the WOA and send it to Teludyne for their Straight Jacket service. The Straight Jacket will keep the operating temp low and increase barrel life. The main issue I have with the 22 Nosler is it is a barrel burner and expected barrel life is ~2000 rounds. Also, If you are going to shoot the heavies choose the 8-twist.
I ended up going with a 24” 8-twist BSF barrel. It met my criteria for weight and a threaded barrel. I should have it by the end of the month. Ballistic Advantage and Proof are the other two barrels I considered. |

AR barrels are cheap, and 2000 rounds is a lot.

I don't have enough time behavior the .22 Nosler to give a good answer. Now a bolt action with a long enough magazine to set heavy bullets might be interesting.

I've read the 22 Nosler chews up brass so bad it isn't reloadable. Just something you may want to check on. I have no hands on experience with the cartridge.

The ballistics comparison is between bullets (77gr SMK vs 90 VLD) not necessarily between cartridges. As the article above mentioned, the 22 Nosler case capacity is 1.3grs more H2O than the 224 Valkyrie modeled cartridge since the specs are not yet published. So technically, if the 22 Nosler is used with a 90gr bullet, it should beat the Valkyrie since it has more case capacity. Also, the data in the article was based on a 20” Barrel. Running a 24” Barrel should get a 50-100fps increase in velocity.
Funny how the article talks about the Six8 Mags and loading out to 2.30” since that is what I will be doing. |

Was only planning to run 40gr, 55gr, and 77gr bullets being that I’m getting a 8-Twist barrel. 90gr could be an issue and from what I’ve read a 7-twist is preferred. I will try the 90gr and post back. Still another 2-weeks until the barrel ships.

So today I priced out a Larue tactical Ultimate upper kit. it came out to like 790$. I'm probably gonna go this route and later down the road add a .223 AI barrel for it. Seems like I can use a standard barrel in it with their barrel nut. I like the looks of that upper and for the kit it is priced right. I should end up with a top notch shooter.
Thanks everyone for the information. Scott |

22 Nosler brass is on sale @ Midway for $103/250.
(2) bags of that, Hornady dies, (4) mags and the clearance upper for $293 just happened to be in my cart. |
|
Yeah Good!

I for sure will do a report on the Larue kit. Its a hell of a steal for what you get at that price. Just need to figure out glass for it.
