Main concern is that I'm told that barrel swaps on the 1500 can be a pain in the ass, but I haven't really found much on the subject. Is that the case?

Maybe and maybe not and most likely not if the smith knows his job. Also that is only with the factory barrel which are usually on pretty tight like the Remingtons. If he gets multiple barrels for a switch barrel made for the rifle then he will have no issues changing them out at home.
