Hi!

I found a cheap Winchester 70 in 30-06 at my lokal gunsmith, that looked like it could use some love. It have always wanted to have one, but never found one at a price i could afford, so i bought it. Now im waiting for the paperwork on the rifle(need a licens for the rifle in my country, so i can get the gun in a month or so). Can anyone tell me anything about the rifle? Is it pre 64? Is it a special edition or something? Or just the usual standard model?

Also, it is missing the rear sight and the cover on the front sights. The action was smooth and the barrel at least looked nice.

Any info highly appreciated!

I would say post-64.  The serial number will tell you everything.  The missing parts should be easy to replace.  Try Brownells, if you are able to order from there.  Not sure who is available in Europe.

Looks like a post 64 push feed. Give me a picture of the top of the action/bolt and I'll tell you for sure.

The pre '64 has a claw extractor (like a Mauser or Springfield) and a bump on top of the bolt when the bolt is down. When you open the bolt that bump rides on the left rail.

If it has a claw extractor and no bump it's a post '64 CRF. But I don't see an extractor on that one.

Thanx for the answers! I got the serialnumber from the seller, and it is from 1979. I will post some more pictures when i get the permit for the gun!

The only place i found that sell the rear sight, that is missing is Gunbroker, but the sellers there dont send to Europe sadly enough.. I will try to persuade one of the sellers to send it to me in Europa.

Edit: Apparently its not possible to open an account on gunbroker from a scandinavian country :/

If you really want a rear sight and aren't going to put a scope on it I would look into a peep sight. I've always liked peeps better than typical rear sights.

Email Brownells or midwayusa.  They may be able to figure out a way to ship to you.

The pics are gone. But the model 70s I have with iron sights are still better suited to a scope.  The cheek on the stock is high and getting down onto the rear sight is very unnatural.

Finaly i got the firearms certificate for the rifle and could pick it up from my lokal dealer!

Its not that beautifull, the stock has seen some use...

I decided to try do something about the stock, and had it covered with laquer-remover and then scraped of all the old varnish with a knife. It took some effort to sand down the scrapings from the knife, but it could be done with 100 and 400 grit sandpaper. I even managed to find the iron sights for the rifle. I covered the stock with 4 layers of TruOil, with some sanding in between.

Overall im happy with the result, not bad for an old beater...

Nice rifle. Good job on the stock. I'm looking at the pictures on my phone so it's hard to tell, but is there a butt pad on that stock? If not, you will definitely want one.

Thanx!

The stock has the original black plastic butt pad, but after shooting a bit with the rifle im actually considering having a rubber recoil pad mounted, shooting 30-06 in a sitting or laying down possition isnt that easy on the shoulder.

Nice rifle and nice work!

I like the finish you used.  I used it before on a Winchester 52c match rifle.  I think it replicates the older Winchester finish well.

One issue i am having is a sprint coming loose on the bolt, its probably holding the bolt end cap in place. I tried hammering it back in, but it just comes out after a while again. Has anyone got an idea about what to do?

I would put a dab of blue loctite on it and drive it back in.
