Anyone rebarrel their HMR with a non-Bergara barrel yet?

Mine stuck with a refrigerator magnet with the old shroud still on the assembly; albeit not a strong attraction.  I disassembled it and the shroud didn’t stick. It’s worth disassembling it to be sure, IMHO.

A magnet stuck to mine strongly but I went ahead and disassembled the bolt to be sure. Mine is definitely steel.

I took the shroud itself off and a magnet stuck but not very strongly.  I guess it might be OK.  It's a 2017 from the serial number.

P.S.  Getting the shroud back on was a God-awful bitch but I finally got it.

Did the magnet stick to the threads? Mine had a strong attraction to both the shroud and threads. If yours is a 2017 my understanding is it still had the old style.

That magnet could be being attracted to the steel in the firing pin/cocking piece that passes through the shroud.  That's why I took the shroud off.

I just emailed Bergara.  I'll see what they say.

Wow.  Within 5 minutes I had a reply.  Gave them my address.  New shroud on the way!  Excellent service IMO.

Edit:  Just received the new shroud.  Definitely magnetic compared to the old one.

Looking at getting an HMR Pro in 6.5 creedmoor since it seems to be a great round. My question is what barrel length should I get? I’m thinking 22” or 24” but can’t decide. Any advice?

I believe it is only available in a 24" length (link) so the decision is easy!

Really want to buy the B-14 HMR in 300 Win Mag.

I missed out on no less than 3 of these for $650 to 750 in the EE earlier this month (now there are none in 300WM).

Kentucky Guns has them in stock, but is there a better source to buy from if I want this model Bergara?

I have an early production Bergara.  Based on some comments and such in this thread, I sent them an email last night about what I need to do about replacing my barrel shroud.  Had an email first thing this morning about them needing my address to send me a new shroud.

THAT is customer service.

Just got my new shroud installed.  If you have never worked with bolt guns bolts before....word to the wise that read this, make sure you have the means to compress a firing pin spring.  They are no joke.

Anyhow, when I got the new shroud, it looked nearly exactly like the old shroud and was a wee bit miffed that maybe they sent the wrong part.  HOWEVER, when the old shroud is off, it is a nearly non magnetic alloy. A magnet would just BARELY grab (but not hold) onto only the rearmost, thickest portion of the shroud.

The new shroud, on the other hand, was heavily ferromagnetic at all points of construction and stuck fast to my magnet.

Though my original shroud looked fine I didn't like the idea of driving one hundred miles to shoot somewhere nice and remote only to have the threads on the shroud fail after a shot or two...or something equally frustrating so I ordered a new one early this week.  I had it by yesterday.

I am guessing that the alloy they were using just wasn't always up to the task OR there could have been variations in geometry and heat treat that could cause one to fail.   I do feel a bit more confident with an ostensibly tougher alloy, proper steel shroud.

Interesting...  @desertmoon - how many rounds do you have thru your HMR?  I bought an HMR (in .308) in mid-2017.  Since then I have run about 1,400 rounds thru it without a single problem...  I have considered getting a replacement shroud but so far, I am going with - if it ain't broke, don't fix it...  although I AM glad to hear that Bergara stands firmly behind their products!

Just bought a HMR Pro in 6.5 PRC.  Was able to get it on sale at the LGS for $1449 before taxes.

Apparently they said these 6.5 PRC rifles are selling like hot cakes at that store from what the manager told me.

I'm going to throw on a Leupold Mark5HD 5-25 on it.  Not too big of a fan of the stock so I might just take it off and swap in a Manners or KRG. If anyone is interested in making an offer on the HMR Pro stock I'd be willing to part with it lol.

I'm going to expirement with loads on this gun for sure.  Once I break it in, I think I am going to reload some 147 grains @3150-3175 FPS.  Maybe higher at the expense of the barrel's life.

Which makes me bring up a question that may be a dumb one.  Since Bergaras have special actions / barrels, do I HAVE to send the action in for them to rebarrel it or is there a way to get pre-fit barrels made up for these?

Has anyone else cut down their HMR barrel?  I took mine down from 22" to 18" and I am only losing about 40fps according to my el cheapo caldwell chrono.  The 22" was getting about 2670 while the 18" is getting 2630... I was just wondering if this is typical or if i need to invest in a new chrono.  (Ammo was factory Hornady ELD-M).  Whatever the velocity was... it shot well (about 0.45moa average over 3 3-shot groups to rezero)

Took my new Bergara HMR Pro in .308 to the range for the first time yesterday, I've got a Vortex Viper PST 4-16 mounted on a 0 MOA EGW base. Put 3 different rounds through it at 100 yards and so far I'm not happy. I'm going to spend some time this week and clean it and double check and make sure that everything is torqued down properly and then next time I go out I'll most likely pick up a box of Federal Premium Gold Medal Match and see how that shoots since it is one of the rounds that Bergara uses to accuracy check their rifles.

Trying the Federal GMM is a good idea.
I'm an average shooter, but with minimal effort on my part, my .308 700 AAC-SD readily shoots 1" 5-shot group at 100yds. with Federal Gold Medal Match 168 or 175gr.
If I put in a bit more effort, I can usually get a few groups around 1/2" out of say 6 or 8 groups in a single range trip.
I only shoot a box or two per range trip as the FGGM is expensive ($1/round)

Two best groups (pure luck) have been 0.38" (5 shots,168gr) and 0.21" (4-shots, 175gr).

Hopefully your B-14 will like it. I would say if not, something is wrong.

My bolt shroud just broke. Called customer service and they are sending two new ones.
My rifle has a build date of 2017.

Are the new ones good? Or has there been problems with the new shrouds? Only have 200 rds through the gun.

Thanks!

I was about to pull the trigger on an HMR Pro but got a Dan Wesson Specialist instead

Still plan to get a Bergara but is the HMR Pro worth the additional ~$500 over the regular HMR? I’ve seen all the comparison sheets but for people who have experience with both models do you feel that the Pro was worth the additional money?

So I ordered the Pro version since it offers a lot of features over the regular HMR. Any recommendations on a base and rings? I don’t do crazy long range shooting so a zero MOA base is fine with me. I’m using a Vortex Viper HST 4-16 that I already have until I decide on a permanent optic. I’m thinking EGW base and Warne rings since I’ve had good experiences with them in the past and they are not crazy expensive. I don’t need the absolute best quality yet since this is non-competition range gun.

NB: something to be aware of is that the screw sizes for the base on the Premier action are different that those on the B-14 action.  IIRC, the B-14 uses 6x48 screws and the Premier uses 8x40.

My only other recommendation is that you get a 20 MOA base.  The cost is the same as a 0 MOA base and you might save yourself (or the gun's next owner) some work down the road when someone decides that they want to use it to shoot at something 1,000 yards away!

Got the HMR Pro in 6.5 Creedmoor out yesterday and this thing is a laser with Hornady 140 gr ELD. Current setup is a Seekins 20 MOA base, Warne low rings, and vortex viper HST Gen 1 4-16 SFP MOA version. Eventually I’m going to replace the glass with a mil dot Gen 2 PST. I see a lot of negative stuff on vertical split rings but I didn’t have any issues yesterday getting hits out to 500 yards. Very happy with the Pro version, I just wish 6.5 had a longer barrel life.

Well... i'd just buy ammo and be done with it.  If you reload, do that but as far as factory ammo, mine shoots the 140gr Hornady Match best.  Or you could go a little overboard and change everything like i did

Ya know, I've seen this in quite a few review videos. The reviewers never mention it and I sort of wrote it off as them short/weak stroking the bolt but I does look fairly common with these rifles.

Got my 24" 6.5 today. I got the scope mounted but then immediately ordered shorter rings. I can drop it down a notch no sweat and may even go to direct mounts rings to get even lower. I use Talley rings on my R700 223 and may do that again. My only concern is that I not go so low that when I upgrade the Viper 6.5-20 to something with a larger lens I don't have clearance. We'll see once the low Vortex rings arrive.

Did anyone specifically remove the shiny/slick surface on the stock? I wouldn't call it glossy but it's definitely got a sheen to it and isn't doing me any favors for grip while carrying it. I gave the stock a gentle clean with soapy water but haven't done anything serious yet. 0000 steel wool didn't do anything noticeable but I don't have anything coarser handy. I'm not unhappy with the paint job so I'm not really looking to repaint or remove so much it's visibly worn if I can avoid it. That'll happen on its own just fine. I guess worst case scenario I do a good textured clear coat.

Overall, very happy with it for a "haven't shot it yet" situation. Fit and finish are good. Mags seat nicely. Everything feels like what I'd expect. I'm going to hold off taking it to the range until I can get the lower rings but that should still get me to pew pew sometime early next week or maybe even this weekend.
