@binthere

8-40 .360 Torx Screws

I ordered a 12 pack from Brownells. I have extras if you need some.

I took some pictures and had some guys with much more experience than me look at my mod 5 I recently got from Allen Brown. The barrel contour is absolutely ridiculous. It appears to have been done by hand. I’ve come to the realization I have no confidence in the weapon. I will order a new barrel on Monday from Lilja and ship it all off to be completely gone through. I have no idea why he put out work like this. I’m not going to waste time dwelling on it. Hopefully I can just get it fixed and put it behind me.

Damn, that really sucks! 2+ years and a ton of money lead to that abomination, Alan needs to send you a complete refund! Please have your new gunsmith send you pics of any other problems when he pulls the gun apart. I would bet that there are numbers stamped into the chamber end of the barrel because he didn't cut it correctly and the receiver was probably never trued. Unfortunately, you might not be able to salvage that barrel, you'll need a new Lilja blank.

I’ll call Lilja for a barrel Monday. I’ve been directed to another smith. I’m just going to have him replace the barrel and redo the whole build. Be done with it. At least I didn’t blow my MK11 can off the end of it or something like that.

I’m afraid to. That’s why I say I have no confidence in the thing. The round count log shows he put 5 rounds through it but I don’t know if that was suppressed and I would absolutely not put my MK11 can on that and hope it was ok. I’ll just take a step back, get it squared away and be good to go.

Smart, I was only asking because of the amount of copper in the bore. I was curious to see if it grouped.

"This gun is 1 of 2 privately owned Surgeon CSR rifles pulled from a USSOCOM contract in the 2013-2015 timeframe (of 30-40 total built). It is a Surgeon SA/MSR action on a Remington RACS chassis. It is chambered in 7.62 Nato and comes with a Bartlein SS MTU 16" and 24" serial matching 1:8 twist barrel with AWC suppressor mount brakes. It is wearing a Schmidt & Bender 3-20 Ultra short in a Spuhr mount. The coating on the rifle is a proprietary non-reflective color. The rifle uses a Jewel trigger that is amazing in itself."

Very nice, I love those rifles! Looks like you've got number 26, that's a great score, congrats!

There were 2 pulled off the line when they were originally produced, I know one of the guys who has one. There's also a couple more floating around that were used for government testing, a friend picked up one of those rifles last year, it even has a carbon fiber forend that was made by Lancer! I asked Frank Green about these guns a few years ago, he said that Bartlein barreled about 100 of these contract rifles.

So the original rifles would have been marked with H-IBA (Iron Brigade Armory) as the proof of the rifle and whether or not it was functional or not.  My smilth's company is Outback Custom Guns so he puts OCG instead of IBA as he doesn't work for them now.

My understanding is that the 1.265" rings were made for the MIRS/MARS rails.

Either he's got some seriously cool other toys, or is making way for some. Hard to be cooler than a Stoner 63 though.

$3000-$5000 for a M40A1 with a Unert?  That has to be a way low estimate.

Yeah Jesus, F Alan Brown.

I sent in a gun almost 3 years ago, with an estimated 6-9month build time. I figured fine, he's got a good rep, but it will probably be late if he's busy cuz he's got a good rep. Checked in at 9 months, well blah blah blah health excuses. Ok, I'm not unreasonable. Waited 6 months, checked again, same shit. Well now I'm like ~1.5 years in and figuring, jesus it MUST be soon. Check in at ~2 years, and told "its in process". Ok, now we're getting somewhere, Figure I'll check back in 3 months, nope, no joy, 6 months no joy. Start reading about "problems" with him. Great... Start trying to contact him once a month by email, phone, facebook etc. Finally 2 months ago! Ping! I'll send your parts next week. Then, nothing, nothing, A month later, sorry been sick... Finally a month after that I get a photo of box with a tracking number.

Open it up yup, all my parts still there entirely untouched, with a few rusty spots (no big deal but still)…

If anyone has a rifle with this guy, pull-the-fucking-cord.

So I was trying to get a hold of Alan Brown since last December. With no luck, I sent him a couple more emails and phone calls hoping he would respond.  After receiving nothing in return, it was suggested I contact the ATF office in Indiana and have them contact him.  When the agent asked for the information, I give him Alan's contact, he says that name is familiar for some reason.  Then he says 'Oh yeah. We had to contact him for another guy as well.'  After the agent took a few days, I get a call back stating that Alan has no record of receiving my stuff by serial number, but to send him an email to confirm.  If no response in five days to call the agent back.  I sent Alan an email and within 24 hours I had a response from him saying he had my parts and was sending them back that week.  Per tracking number they will be delivered tomorrow.
I hate to say it but if you can't get a hold of the man, the ATF sure can and quickly too.

Alan has also responded to a few guys that have threatened lawsuits, that really lit a fire under his ass! My buddies were serious about it too, they had already talked to their lawyers. Everything from getting their rifles/parts back to getting money back after Alan bait-and-switched on items he had for sale (items were returned to Alan, but jackass thought it was totally fine to just keep their money)! I still need to go through my records, Alan might still have a stock that I sent him a long time ago (was supposed to be a trade for work that he never completed). Alan is a fucking clown that has ripped off countless members of our community, he brought down his own reputation.

If anyone still needs to get their shit back from him, mention the ATF and lawyers, that's pretty much the only way to pull his head out of his ass.

It’s really sad. Sad people are still dealing with this guy and sad he even went this way. My gun was fucked. Sent a brand new Lilja barrel and he trashed it. God knows what else was done. Mine is off to Chris Higgins at Red Bull Armory. I told him completely disassemble and rebuild it from scratch with a new barrel and send me the bill. Whatever needs to be done to make it the gun it should be. I paid Allen 1k plus, I’m a bit embarrassed by this but,I tipped him 200.00 also. I felt lucky to even get my gun built and I had no idea it’s condition. It seemed like it got built and the pictures looked great so I showed my appreciation. I’m also out probably another 200-300 in shipping back and forth.  I’m going to let All that slide. Mainly because I got my gun back as fucked as it is but back none the less and I just don’t need another headache. I’m sure it will be another 1500 to get it rebuilt with a new barrel and all, but it is what it is. I hope the guy finds his way. We all get lost sometimes so I’m not throwing stones. That said he needs to get his shit together enough to at least get everyone their parts and deal with the money issues after that. I can’t believe the ATF has not paid him a visit. He is an FFL I assume. I’m 100% sure they know what’s going on. They have had calls and it’s posted on every forum there is. I really hope everyone gets closure soon. I know I would have flown to Indiana and paid him a visit if it came to it. Not to act like an ass, just show up in person and say I want my items back or I’m calling the Sheriff to get them back.  Just on pure principle.
I just can’t believe I duck in here and it’s still going on. As someone in your shoes at one time I really hope you guys get your stuff and get it fast. Like I said I think the ATF needs to ends this. The whole thing is sad and unfortunate. I know that does not help guys still missing parts. There are just no words.

So I got my parts back from Alan Brown...untouched and lite rust.  Contacted my XM-3 smith and he said no problem.  He was thinking the mod 5 as that's what he had when he was working for MARSOC.  He said he liked the Mod 1/3 design much better.  So I now wait for another smith to build my rifle, however I know it will get done and be a tack driver when done.  Five years including parts acquiring and I am now three months away from finally getting this thing built.

@Davey_Sickboy Nice. Watch the black coating on the interior stretch. It tends to flake off. Better to scrape it off when it starts to deteriorate. Other than that it's a kickass drag bag.

Any good 300wm recipes for their MK13 mod0?? 74gr of H1000 with 220gr SMK and 77.3gr H1000 with 208gr ELD seem to work good but can’t find H1000 anywhere. I’ve got plenty of other powders and bullet weights

i have a surplus MK13 Mod 5 stock coming soon with MARS. Very excited to begin this build! Where should i begin about tracking down the proper prefix action? I have only started my research but i think that is really the only part i cannot just order new from a website.

Buy a G prefix donor rifle from gunbroker or at a local store, it should cost you roughly $500 to $700. Use the receiver, bolt and trigger on your build.
