So I'm watching North Woods Law and they're talking about the distance
required for an arrow to reach its maximum velocity being 20+ yds or so,
that the arrow will build up speed as it travels...is that right? I thought it would
be like a bullet and maximum velocity would be as soon as it leaves the muzzle.
Are they retarded?

Wheres this additional energy coming from once it leaves the bow?

The game warden was giving the archer crap for
shooting a deer at ten yards cause the arrow hadn't
reached full speed yet

Energy question nailed it.

Maybe they mean it takes about 20 yards before the arrow settles down and flies true (moreso from a fingershot bow).  If you hit a target with a crooked flying arrow, it's not going to penetrate deeply like one that hits the target square.

He's probably basing his assumption off of penetration in a foam target.  Sometimes you get more penetration at 20 yards than you do at 10, but there is no velocity gained.    Damping, how does it work?

the arrow oscillates as it flies, the oscillation is greater closer to the bow.
but the arrow is slowing down from the instant it leaves the string, just like a bullet. It's also falling, just like a bullet.

I've never seen anyone chrono a bow at 20 yards.

Maximum energy is at release. There may be a short distance to maximum speed due to stabilization and drag. Not that it matters, energy won't magically appear from foot zero to foot 300. *shrugs*
