Any of the guns you mentioned will work just fine.

During my time living in Fredericksburg I noticed a couple of the old ranchers with M1 carbines in their trucks.  The 80 year old dude I asked about this said they take hogs, yokes, and feral dogs just fine.  People way overthink this stuff. Regular old .223 or 5.56SP is great for brush hunting just about anything smaller than Godzilla (that you'd normally come across in TX).

The trip overall was successful. It took me multiple days until I actually got the chance to see and shoot at some hogs as they were bedded down and not moving. The first one was a small one on the run which I shot at and missed.

The next day I saw another small one at 30 yards and shot. Missed. He ran and I tried again. Miss. I was starting to get frustrated as other guys were starting to rack up the numbers. Then again they all had optics and or thermal scopes.

Finally on the 2nd to last day I got on a larger hog and had the chance to shoot at 50ish yards. I hit him in the leg as he ran away from me. He turned and ran towards me and I launched a few more rounds at him.he finally went down and I ended up putting a few rounds of 45 into him to get him to die.

I had my m1 set at 100 yards on the elevation which when I sighted it in I was dead on with a 6 o clock hold. So I dropped the elevation down to zero and kept on moving.

We got onto a large hog and my buddy shot and hit it. It got up and started to run. I hit it in the front shoulder on the run and it dropped. It was a nice looking white and brown hog. We missed the largest hog by 1 lb.

So when I get a chance I need to see why I was so off with my elevations on the first pig. I felt like I should be an inch ot two low at close up but maybe it was just poor shooting?

Sounds to me like you didn’t practice offhand and got excited and started yanking the trigger and looking over your sights. My wife was the world’s worst to break from this habit. I’ve seen kids do this a lot.

Going away confirms my suspicion even more. You got excited and started to look over your sights with both eyes to catch where the bullet was striking. I’ve done it a million times when dove hunting trying to watch the wad.

great thread oP.
know it's a bit dated but I'm doing some research on calibers for a Texas hog hunt and this was quite useful
glad to hear the hunt went well and hopefully there are several more in your future

Shot placement is key no matter the round, if you're looking to preserve the meat.

Last weekend's 168gr AMAX donee:

Was about to ask about 168 Amax. Just got back into thermal. Had a Flir PTS223 but sold it when Flir quit selling to consumers. Just picked up a Hogster Vibe 35mm. Been debating on which AR to put it on. Have a 12.5 inch barrel 308 AR and a 10.5 inch barrel 300BO. The 308 shoots 168 Amax and the 300BO shoots 110 Vmax/110 Barnes Tac TX. I reload and have a abundance of 168 Amax loaded. Same with the BO. What got me using the 168 Amax is this video.

Still would prefer using the BO being lighter than the 308 AR. Would use 110 Tac TX for hog hunting when I get a chance. But if that’s risky, would use the 308 AR.
