Going out to western Nebraska this weekend to chase after the above mention feathered things, which is a totally new experience for me.  I've hunted pheasant, quail, and ruffed grouse quite a bit, but I've never seen either sharptail or prairie chicken other than in pictures

Any particular stuff to know, gun advice, etc?

I haven't hunted either of them but I would imagine any gun/load you use for ruffed grouse would be more than adequate.

ETA - Maybe study up on bird ID.  Some of them can look quite similar if you haven't been around them.

ETA 2 - Good luck.  Hope you have fun.

Just got back from our yearly waterfowl hunt in SK and we always kill a limit of sharptails when we go (you can only shoot 4 per season as a non resident)  Not sure what Nebraska will be like, but in SK we hunt them along the caragana rows or out in the pastures.  Flushes tend to be longer, so I just use my duck gun with the .675 terror choke (Benelli SBE or super 90) and larger shot.

If they hold tight for the dog just let them get out a bit before shooting, they are not hard to hit or kill.  It is a different animal from ruffed grouse in the woods.

Edit to add pictures

I've shot a few Sharptails in northern Colorado. They are the worst tasting game bird I have ever eaten. I was using my Benelli M2 with target loads I think, it was a few years ago. The birds didn't run much and I think they acted like Ruffed Grouse (not real smart).

We dropped two sharptails on Saturday, waiting to get cooked tonight.  Definitely one of the easier birds I've ever shot.
