Looking to get my son a 12g for dove hunting. Anyone have any good recommendations. Something my wife could also use, she's 5'4", and could also benefit from a shorter stock.

The H and R Pardner pump compact model would have worked if you hadn't said 12 gauge. It's only available in 20. They are nice though. It's a Chinese 870 clone. I don't know if they do a 12 gauge model. cheap inexpensive too.

Just bought a 20 gauge tristar semi.

I know you said 12, but the 20s are lighter and swing easier.

I've never shot a 20g. Is the recoil considerable less?

Since you didn't say any price range, buy a Winchester sx3 field compact. It'd be perfect for both of them and it's the softest shooting 12 gauge I've ever shot....and that's a LOT of new shotguns in the past 3 years.

Any gas operated 12 gauge is going to be lighter in felt recoil compared to any other type of 12 gauge.
If recoil is of concern, go with a 20 gauge.  Plenty of available loads and chokes that will allow you to take any game a 12 gauge would typically be used for.

Still have my H&R single-shot 12g that was my first shotgun - took a lot of dove and pheasant.  Nowadays you can probably find something much better suited for them both, for not much more in cost.

ETA: would also recommend looking at 20g if you haven't.  Capable, but considerable recoil reduction.
