I actually just ordered a carbon fiber barrel for it last night, I'm thinking my accuracy issues are due to the fact that the whole gun is built super light but I hung a barrel that weighs over 3lbs on the end of it. The carbon one weighs 1lb 14oz, i'll test it with factory ammo and then try my hand loads again. But this rifle has already taken a 300lb black bear and a 125lb black bear this year, and it'll be used to try to fill 2 deer tags next month. I think it's a very effective cartridge. |

Bagged a pretty female this morning. She had some beautiful whites and reds mixed in with her coat. The 55 grain Vmax at 250 yards put her down where she stood.

View Quote I was hunting in an area that was mostly steep hills and valleys with heavy bush and scattered trees, with a few agricultural fields in the low lying valleys, it was crops of beets and grainfields. The baboons' daily routine would be to come out of the mountains in the morning and feed in the fields, and back at the mountains in the evening. I was focusing on other species like Bushbuck but ended up with some free time here and there (after getting my other species, a successful trip..long story)..so decided to try to take a baboon. Baboons are smart, skittish, and crafty. They have learned that vehicles and people are predators. They always post a sentry that will sit in a tree and make a barking noise as an alarm to tell the others to flee. Unless I was willing to take 500+ yard shots, hunting the fields during the day wasn't a great option. I was using a shorter barreled lightweight weatherby with a 3-9X set up for short to mid range (out to 400), because it was lightweight, and we were doing all spot and stalk hiking in the hills. Also, I preferred to stay at 400 or less because I don't use a rangefinder, so we found an alternative plan. We were to drive into the valley at dawn to catch them in their beds before they would filter into the fields. The guide knew that as soon as we stopped the vehicle in the valley, that they would scatter. We would have to take a quick shot as soon as the vehicle stopped. I was in the bed of the pickup and Dad was in the front passenger seat (left side of vehicle). The guide knew what cliff face they would be at, about 200 feet above us, and 150-170 yards away, so we were ready. The strategy worked as planned. We had a 10 minute drive from camp in 35 degree weather, I was freezing, my fingers were numb, and the valley was dark. When we rolled to a stop my rifle was already resting on the steel bed rail, the baboons were there and about 8 of them started scurrying over the cliff top. I picked one out, gave it about a one foot lead, and squeezed off. I kept the swing moving when i fired, like in skeet shooting. I aimed in front of him at his hip level because I knew the bullet path was travelling upward. He tumbled down the cliff side and the tracker went to go get him. The bullet went broadside through the upper chest. It wasn't a super miraculous shot, but not an easy one either. |
