Two Coshocton county deer down with my Marlin 1895 last year (my first ever successful year deer hunting).  Both shot within 50 yards, both never took a step.  I can't think of any reason to change up my rifle at this point (for the area where I have hunting permission).

Strange you didn't like the .44 my family has hunted Indiana forever and all use .44's ruger redhawk 7.5" ruger .44 mag carbine ruger 77/44 henry 44 lever you name it someone uses it and ive only heard of one deer not dropping instantly because a friend of ours son hit a gut shot but of easily 2-300 deer in my immediate family its essentially always if you hit them they are DRT.

i'm down with the 450 BM.  BM upper/barrel on top of a PSA blem lower.  Been flawless and accurate. Got a lot of deer under it's belt already.  I'm probably going to pick up a mid-range 350L in a bolt gun for when youngsters want to try their hand in deer hunting.  The 450 is too much for them.

Regarding 350 Legend and 9mm suppressor. Can an Octane HD handle it? Supersonic loads? Aren’t most 9mm cans for pistol ammo?

Sico told me they have no info (yet) regarding 350 legend on pistol cans. Guessing it's too hot, I got a no-go for it (any barrel length) in my octane 45k.

I have a 45-70 but it’s a heavy pig and really more than what I need.  I too built a 450 but didn’t get a deer with it. I did miss and the blast and concussion without ear plugs ruined the rest of the day.
This year I’ve built 2 350 Legend uppers to try.
I really like this caliber and am enjoying working with it. Not nearly as much blast and recoil.
So far they both have proven plenty accurate enough for deer with the 180 grain power points. Best part is about every 2 weeks another factory load comes out to try.
My take on the 350 is it’s a very usable caliber for what I want and how I hunt. Best part is it uses almost all standard parts so you only need a barrel and a mag to get an existing upper ready. Really a pretty cheap way to try out a new round. Should make a nice multipurpose deer and yote gun.

Can't argue with $80. Sabot slugs are kind of cost prohibitive, but when you only shoot 2 boxes to zero and a box/yr after that, it's not bad.

thanks, its a wilson combat barrel. i get one ragged hole at 50 yards and just at an inch at 100. looking to go to a range that goes out to 300 this weekend and see how she does a little further. doubt i would try to take an animal at 300 but just for fun. 200ish probably be my limit for deer.

I’m in Ohio as well and I like option’s.

I have a 450, 50 Beowulf and 350 Legend.  The 450 has been the only one that has laid eyes on deer and hammered them.

The 350 annihilated hogs on a trip last year in Texas using 180gr federal SP.   I have no doubts it’s would work great on a deer.

44 mag in my Marlin lever works fine

I also own a marlin in 45/70 but when you load it hot enough to flatten out the trajectory it is kinda a handful.

In a AR I would be looking hard at the 350, I am not sure of the actual numbers but I am thinking it would shoot a bit flatter than the 450 or 458 and ammo or reloads have to be cheaper. I know ammo cost for a hunting rifle isn't a consideration but anything I am going to hunt with I want to shoot a bunch with to get comfortable with.

That's true of a max load in .45-70 ... but for Ohio or Midwest deer generally, the distances are typically inside 100-yds  - plus how many shots are you really going to get on a deer?

If you miss it with the first one, by the time you've lever-cycled the action, the deer is in the next county.

Look into JES reboring.  I have an old Marlin that was rebored from 30-30 to 38-55.  Great shooter.

I wrote ODNR.  I asked if .458 win mag was legal. It is per the letter I received.  You can download to .45/70 black powder velocity.

You can hand load up to Alaskan game just as easily.

In Michigan, it is an improvement on the old shotgun safety zones. In northern Michigan, you can use whatever you want. In more populated southern Michigan, it was shotguns and muzzle loaders only for years.

Interestingly, most of the good deer hunting is in southern Michigan.

In line muzzeloaders started to game the system by being so efficient. That led to folks lobbying for pistol caliber carbines. I killed quite a few deer with a .44 magnum, both out of a handgun or carbine. Very efficient.

Then they decided the rule would be straight wall, case to a certain length (1.7 inch??) Thats when the 450 Bushmaster and later the .350 Legend came in. This case length is why we aren't using the 45-70.

I am all in on the 450 Bushmaster. I've killed 1 bear and I think 6 whitetails with it. I had a Marlin lever action converted to 450, have a Ruger American and recently put together 2 AR's in 450. It kills things DEAD.

.44 mag mostly. I have a pair of Ruger .44 carbines, a Henry Big Boy and a Winchester 94.  I have a Savage .450 and a cheap .450 upper

Ruger .44 carbines are my favorite.

Would it be suitable on black bears?

.375 was until recently a problem because of availability of ammo . Not just hard to find but almost impossible. I actually walked away a couple of nice guns at decent prices and that is not at all like me .

Not sure when it happened but I am happy to report that Starline is producing .375win brass and Sierra was always up to speed with heads.

From what I remember 375win was designed as a improvement to the 38-55 in stronger modern guns

I can't imagine having a 30-30 set up to fire 38-55 is going to be cheap . The result might work but would not be as capable as a .444 or a 375win which are both bulit on a beefed up frame
