I like the 35’s.
35 Whelen 35 Remington 350 Rem mag 356 Winchester Might do a 358 Winchester just because. |
|
All time Fav - 270 Win. Have 3 of them. Taken too many deer to count, along with a 800 lb interior Grizzly. I only handload. and all shoot sub MOA.
For varmits - 243 win and 22-250, and 223 as last choice. Have lots of others, but it's hard to beat the 270 for an all around cartridge for North America. Better energy and ballistics than the current FAD (6.5cm). |

30-06 Springfield (for killin) .444 Marlin (for the deck gong) .35 Rem (for carrying) .44 Special (for revolver) .300 blk (for SBR time) I like the bigger slower stuff in general 6.5 Creedmoor for punching holes though. Would like to try a 35 Whelen |

Hate to admit it but I’ve never killed anything with it. I have used the 35 Remington and 35 Whelen, both 7600 pumps, to shoot a boat load of deer and one bear. I have also never shot anything with the 356. It’s a Winchester big bore. Unfortunately I have several other rifles in lots of neat calibers that have not been bloodied. |

I have a cou-le of .308’s. They can hunt pretty much anything in the lower 48.

It depends...
In my current AO I'd say hands down the .223. I have yet to have a deer not go DRT with it. In my former AO (think West Texas) it would have to be either 243 or 7mm Mauser. I don't do dangerous game or really anything bigger than deer, impala or kudu. If I ever had the opportunity to hunt anything bigger, it would probably be either 45/70 or 375H&H - depending on what I'm hunting. |
|
Depends on what and where I'm hunting.
For everyday bumping around the woods nothing beats .30-06, if I'm hunting a little farther out say 400-700 ill take the 6.5 creedmoore, if I'm hunting out near 700-1200 I'm taking the .300 RUM |

22lr - 223 - 7mm-08
Every caliber I will ever need, yet somehow not the only calibers I own...... |

250-3000 (250 Savage) is my all time favorite cartridge.
30-06 is my go to for versatility. 308 was always my Tactical go to, but it has fallen by the wayside for 6.5 Creedmoor. We’re going elk hunting in a couple of weeks and I’m taking my Barrett FieldCraft in 6.5 with my old faithful Sauer 202 in 30-06 as my backup rifle. I can see 6.5 CM becoming about all I shoot other than 223. |
|
My hunting rifle battery consists of the following:
Ruger 10/22 in .22LR Ruger Mini 14 in .223 Zastava M-70L in 6.5 X55 Swede Winchester Model 64 in .30-30 Browning BAR in .30-06 Remington M700 in 8X57 JS (8MM Mauser) Remington Model 760 in .35 Remington Marlin 336 in .35 Remington Marlin 1894 in .44 Magnum Gary |
|
|
For me I really like the 222/223 in bolt guns, so little recoil you can often see the hits, then I also really like the 250 savage and 257 Roberts in a bolt gun, also pretty fond in the 7-08.

.270 Win in a Model 700 BDL I got new in 1987. I’ve shot many many deer, hogs, and coyotes with it. I’ve hunted with other guns at times but my .270 just feels right and it’s the gun I have the most confidence in. It’s on its third scope and the best one yet, just a Leupold VX-2 3-9x40 but super clear and I never ever have to re zero it holds so well.
However, my .450 Bushmaster is fast making it difficult to stay true to the .270. It just may be the most accurate rifle I own (at 100-150 yds anyway) it’s fun to shoot, and it really does a number on hogs. |

Quoted: Calling me out, I see. Granted, I have more than 3 rifles for hunting, but I don't see the point in owning a bunch of one dimensional rifles. I prefer rifles that shoot versatile calibers that cover multiple roles, like 243 Winchester, which can be loaded down for varmints, or loaded up with heavier rounds for most medium game. I laugh when I see people who say they need 5 different rifles just for deer. Realistically, I can hunt just about everything I'd ever need to with a 12 Gauge, 243 Winchester, and 375 H&H Magnum. Those three cover pretty much any game animal on the spectrum. I don't need one gun per every different kind of critter that exists lmao. I can use a 243 and cover a broad range of "critters." I get on just fine with only a few rifles, so it must not be that hard to do View Quote Every farm had the following: .22lr bolt action .303 (usually sporterized Enfield) or 7x57 Mauser or some other bolt action (usually in calibers: 243 308 or 30-06) 12 gauge pump Depending on the men that did prior service and location of the farm, there could also be a government issued R1 (FAL) and Sanna (9mm locally made MAC10 type deal) but it wasn't very common. So yes, it is completely possible to get by with only 3 rifles. I'd happily hunt with only a .22 and 7mm Mauser to the end of my days. Great thing about America - we don't have to limit ourselves to those. |

The OP just asked for your favorite cartridges. No one is limiting the number either way. And the answers are 100% subjective and dependent on an infinite number of factors ranging from personal preferences, uses, and geographic locations. Not knowing the reasons behind the choices, just take it as a light-hearted and fun question for this forum.
I've been using the same 30/06 to kill deer since '82. Ive tried others, 30/30 marlin, model 8 in 30 remington, sporter 30/40 krag, sporter 8mm 98, ar15, sporter sks, ar10, security-six .357, 300 win mag, 338 win mag, 270 win, 1911 45 acp, and 20 ga slugs. I seem to always come back to my dad's old remington 700 '06 and the sporterized SKS for deer. Now, 12ga, 20 ga, and .410 all have their places, but the 12 ga is obviously the most versatile--though I just don't miss when I'm wingshooting with the little topper jr 20 ga singleshot. For small game, it's 22lr all the way, except for one specific instance: When Missouri first opened up squirrel season in the Spring is when I said hello to the .410, and she's my best friend when I'm out there facing the ticks, mosquitoes, windless humid heat and eye-stinging sweat in the hunt for tender young spring Greys in all that foliage--when I was a kid I'd pretend I leading a LRRP team against mulberry-stealing VC in the trees lol. |

I posted in July, but have spent the last few months ferreting out my needs. Having some time behind a 308Win AR10 (among other things) has changed my mind on my “favorite cartridges”:
Handgun 22LR ... practical for plinking, analog training, and maybe even field use (although I’ve not had much luck in that department) 9mm ... cheap 2 legged self defense round (only on the list because of the per round price) 45 ACP ... good / better for self 2 legged self defense when it’s impossible to carry my 43 oz 5” P220 Elite 10mm. 10MM ... my overall favorite handgun cartridge (versatile enough for 2 and 4 legged defense along with hunting) Shotgun 12 Gauge ... I’ve had a few 20’s, but 12 wins hands down for versatility. Rifles 22LR ... cheap and fun to shoot, easy to carry, great on pests and small game. 22Mag ... for those times when a 22LR isn’t enough but a 223Rem is too much (only really like it in a CZ452 or CZ455) 223 Rem / 5.56x45 ... fun to shoot, low recoil, and good for varmint. 308Win / 7.62x51 ... this has replaced 30-06 on my list because of the ease of use / accuracy of a good AR10. 300WM ... this replaces the “heavy 30” option vacated by deleting 30-06 while remaining “shootable”. Runners Up / Probably Should Be On My List Handgun 44 Mag ... as much as I love 10mm it has limitations as it’s just a heavy 357M or light 41M. Rifle 243Win ... I just like this one. Cartridges That Interest Me (but that I haven’t used) 45 Super (loaded in a HK USP45 / 45ACP chambered Gun) 45-70 (in a Stainless / Laminate Marlin Guide Gun) 6.5C (in a LMT MWS) 220 Swift This thread was an interesting read. |

35 Whelen - took my first bear with it
45/70 - another obvious bear round 6mm AI - had a beautiful custom rifle I regret letting go of. |

6.5X55 or anything close to it. I was using this a long time before it became a thing. This was before premium bullets. Why?
6mm/243 often failed bad. I still despise them. They where billed as an easy shooting cartridge. However there where a lot of varmit bullets that was used on deer sized game. Even a lot of the big game bullets failed due to too light of contruction. When they worked it was like lighting but it tore up a lot of meat and made a mess. I still have a prejudace I cant shake for any good reason. I honestly would use a 223/5.56 befoe one. I have taken moose in close with the old 160 RN Corelokt. This gun was as easy to shoot as the 6's or damn close but it sure acted a lot bigger. Modern bullets havew changed all of this. I like the 250 gr plus 338 rifle over any of the dmaller mags for the same reason. Put stuff down had a high BC and didnt tear the shit out of stuff. Again this has changed but the old stuff still works. 22 hornet for small game. I loaded myself and it was like a mini big hunt taking the time and effort into it All the stuff starting at 416 and up. Why ? I had a chance to hunt with an original Rigby. Even though I was left handed. |
|
I’d have to say my favorite deer cartridge is 8x57JS. I used that cartridge to take my first buck with my 1944 K98, and it’s what I take out usually every year.
45/70 Gov’t is also another one of my favorites. |
|
I've killed more deer with a .50 muzzle loader than anything, but you asked about cartridges. .270 is the leading big game cartridge in my safe with .308 next. My wife is shooting 7/08. I am liking that cartridge a lot as well.
