It's that time of the year so let's get it kicked off.

Attached File Can I get an FPNI? Opening day archery. Slept in, hit the stand at 3pm. This was the 6th deer I saw out of 8 today. Wasn't really planning on shooting anything. It's still T-shirt weather, and I don't like having to hurry to get it in the freezer. He came out into the field at the edge of my range munching clover, and I was content to let him pass and simply watch the bugs boiling around in the sunlight. But a loud-ass wheeler went by 200yds away--he spooked, ran under me and parked 10yds behind me where I don't have a shot. Then two does went past him (sounded like two), and he took and interest in them. Then he came back, out from behind me. I passed on an easy 5yd shot, but started regretting that the second he'd cleared the cover that would have allowed that flawless shot. He resumed munching about 10yds in front of me which was more than I could stand. So I drew back... At least I attempted to. My elbow hit the tree, and there I was. Bow up, but completely unable to draw with him squaring off at me, thumping the ground, and downwind. I figured he'd spook, watching my raised arrow bouncing in direct sunlight (I'm lit up, looking into the sun). But after the longest time, he started munching again. And moved to the right and presented his tail. I got my foot shifted and angled the bow to the right as he swung back towards the left, showing me his broad left side and started working in that direction. I was able to draw and then swing left, knowing that he'd see me, but that was enough. Hit him in the back of the left shoulder. He wasn't as broadside-on as I thought. Got through the diaphragm, stomach and spleen. He jolted up and bolted with my arrow flapping out the far side, only held back by the fletching. I heard a splash meaning he'd reached the creek, but that was about it. At this time, I realized I didn't have a flashlight. Or a tarp to line the back of my Jeep. Shit. Totally half ass-ed hunting. Did I mention this was the first arrow I'd shot in 10 months? Anyway, long story shortened, I got back to the Jeep, grabbed by Brother-in-Law, and he's now skinned and hanging. He'd gone about 30 yds. |

I too got a buck opening day in the afternoon!
I had 3 does with fawns around a different stand in the morning so I passed on them Went to the opposite end (of the stand used in the AM) of my front woods at 4PM and by 5 I had not seen a thing. At 5:30 a 4 pointer came from my right towards the front on my stand and -since I wasn't going to shoot him- I started filming him. Not 15 seconds after I started filming him I heard loud smacking in front of me but slightly to my left. There was an 8 pointer eating acorns under a small tree! I stopped filming, picked up my bow and stood ready to shoot He was facing me so I held! He started to look to his left side (my right) and to get spooky. There was a doe that had come in while I waited for him to turn and give me a shot and she was stomping with one leg and looking up at me The 4 pointer was oblivious to her, but the 8 was getting ready to bolt and turned to leave. When he turned quartering away I released the arrow. As he ran away I noticed the arrow was sticking a foot out in an angle and had not passed through. From my angle I had thought it was stuck in the rump so I wasn't happy and decided to give him 1/2 hr to get sore and lay down. Got down at 6PM and took my bow and quiver to where I shot him but there wasn't a drop of blood. I followed the tracks and any disturbance on the ground he had caused (hoof prints, turned over leaves and stones, broken twigs........but NO BLOOD. I went 80-100 feet before I saw him on the ground and approached him from behind -with another arrow nocked- til I was 10 Yds from him. He tried to run but could not go more than 3 feet before falling down, so I put another arrow in him and he started gasping. I approached him again and seeing he could not get up went for my ATV and dragged him to my house The arrow had entered behind the front shoulder and was plugging the entrance hole. The 125 grain Thunderhead had stuck in the opposite front shoulder and couldn't go through and leave an exit wound. Without an exit wound he was bleeding internally without any blood seeping out Moral of the story is: always do "due diligence" in finding a shot animal, even when you think you had a bad hit and there is no blood trail to follow which "seems to confirm" a bad hit Maybe @thebeekeeper1 can post the pictures for me |

Attached File I got this three point Blacktail buck late this afternoon! Shot him broadside just behind the shoulder and high enough that the bullet clipped the spine with my 300 Winchester magnum from about 20 yards. Dead right there. It didn't even move. It just fell over. |

Yes. He is the only buck I have taken with a sharp stick.
In the past I would try to take a doe during our bow season. I like to hunt with different weapons depending on what I may be into that particular year. 300BLK, 44 Mag Super Redhawk, etc but when the rut is on, I usually stick to my 7mm mag as it gets the job done for sure. This buck was a personal best. NAP expandable broadheads worked perfectly. |

Nice shot! I’m not at that comfort level at 100 yards with my 44mag. I need to practice but you have inspired me! |
