Can I get an FPNI?

Opening day archery.  Slept in, hit the stand at 3pm.  This was the 6th deer I saw out of 8 today.  Wasn't really planning on shooting anything.  It's still T-shirt weather, and I don't like having to hurry to get it in the freezer.  He came out into the field at the edge of my range munching clover, and I was content to let him pass and simply watch the bugs boiling around in the sunlight.  But a loud-ass wheeler went by 200yds away--he spooked, ran under me and parked 10yds behind me where I don't have a shot.  Then two does went past him (sounded like two), and he took and interest in them.  Then he came back, out from behind me.  I passed on an easy 5yd shot, but started regretting that the second he'd cleared the cover that would have allowed that flawless shot.  He resumed munching about 10yds in front of me which was more than I could stand.  So I drew back...

At least I attempted to.  My elbow hit the tree, and there I was.  Bow up, but completely unable to draw with him squaring off at me, thumping the ground, and downwind.  I figured he'd spook, watching my raised arrow bouncing in direct sunlight (I'm lit up, looking into the sun).  But after the longest time, he started munching again.  And moved to the right and presented his tail.  I got my foot shifted and angled the bow to the right as he swung back towards the left, showing me his broad left side and started working in that direction.   I was able to draw and then swing left, knowing that he'd see me, but that was enough.  Hit him in the back of the left shoulder.  He wasn't as broadside-on as I thought.  Got through the diaphragm, stomach and spleen.

He jolted up and bolted with my arrow flapping out the far side, only held back by the fletching.  I heard a splash meaning he'd reached the creek, but that was about it.  At this time, I realized I didn't have a flashlight.   Or a tarp to line the back of my Jeep.  Shit.  Totally half ass-ed hunting.  Did I mention this was the first arrow I'd shot in 10 months?  Anyway, long story shortened, I got back to the Jeep, grabbed by Brother-in-Law, and he's now skinned and hanging.  He'd gone about 30 yds.

This one had figured out were the stand was and would check to see if someone was in it.

I had to move the stand after Thursday's morning hunt. She still spotted me in the evening but decided to come back an hour later.

Literally cut the heart in half.  I was shooting from a tripod about 15' in the air so the picture is of the entrance and the arrow went down and exited a little lower on the other side.

She was running on pure adrenaline.  It looked like someone took a gallon of red paint and just spilled it out everywhere, amazing.

I prefer to hunt mornings so I can take my time and clean the deer in the daylight.  That said, I wont complain if I get one in the evening...

I got this three point Blacktail buck late this afternoon!   Shot him broadside just behind the shoulder and high enough that the bullet clipped the spine with my 300 Winchester magnum from about 20 yards.  Dead right there.  It didn't even move. It just fell over.

Proud dad, my son killed his first.  He shot it at 50 yards with a 6.25" .300BO, hit the liver and back of one lung before exiting pretty far back on the far side. It only ran about 30 yards.

Very nice!  That's great that your son was able to get his first deer!  That barrel looks way longer  than 6.25"

Flew my 11 year old grandson up  from NC for a taste of the Illinois Youth Gun Season.
He has taken some does with his x-bow, he was in search for his first buck, the search no longer continues.

Passed up a 10 pt on Saturday morning.
It was my first morning hunt this season so far and decided to let him walk as I know there is a BIGGER buck around.

Really wasn't into it this am... I swore I'd not go hunting (hog hunting excluded) until it cooled off some, but my hunting buddy talked me into it last night.

I'd captured this guy coming quite regularly to my stand, along with lots of doe. My buddy saw perhaps a dozen doe and a buck (unknown rack details) chasing a doe, his son in law saw lots of doe with a small buck chasing a couple doe back and forth across an opening... no clean shot and unsure of rack details.

All I saw was this guy, he came in just before 7:30 as expected, came from right to left at about 15 yards from some thickets and I lost sight of him shortly after... thought he left as I heard the wire fence twang shortly after I lost sight of him... then suddenly he was at my 10:00 at about 15 yards feeding facing mostly broadside... it was still dark down in the swamp area I'm hunting.

Part of me said shoot him, part of me said pass... and he was on my mind since leaving the truck as far as shoot no-shoot if I see him. I've got to the point I won't shoot this type buck on my own property which I also have adjoining land leased so as to try to manage better bucks to some degree. However, this spot is private land I have access to that butts up against a limited opportunity hunt WMA so generally speaking, there are lots of deer. So when I got a good look, I decided to fill the freezer.

Both ears are shredded and I'm not sure if a dog or coyote got ahold of him as it looks like that vs. injuries from fighting. They have healed up for the most part making me think it happened before velvet antlers hardened enough to cause the damage. There is an abundance of small coyote in the area as well. Who knows... looks like a would-have-been brow tine was damaged and pushed backwards as well.

I used a 295gr. Power Belt driven by 150grs. of Pyrodex... I could feel the bullet under the skin on the opposite side and recovered it.

Ruptured neck and back vertebrae along with perpetual rotator cuff issues forced me to trade my bow for a crossbow. I hunt with a rifle usually but this place is tight and I love bow hunting so I thought I would try out my luck.

I let this buck walk in 2015. Had him on camera in 2016 and earlier this year. Took the morning off work to see what I could see.

I had several does and a cow horn came through but by 9:45am I hadn’t seen anything for an hour. I looked at my watch at 9:56 and said I’m out at 10am. 2 minutes later, he walked in.  I heard him fall but still waited an hour. He didn’t get any further than 50 yards. Pretty happy and he scored about 128.

Yes.  He is the only buck I have taken with a sharp stick.

In the past I would try to take a doe during our bow season.

I like to hunt with different weapons depending on what I may be into that particular year.  300BLK, 44 Mag Super Redhawk, etc but when the rut is on, I usually stick to my 7mm mag as it gets the job done for sure.

This buck was a personal best.  NAP expandable broadheads worked perfectly.
