175 gr Sierra Match King over 43 gr of W748 in commercial brass and Remington 9 1/2 magnum primers.

On thin skinned game, SMK are devastating. They act like miniature hand grenades.

Yep. Loaded myself or Winchester "warewolf killers".  150's work really well too.  Hammer of God indeed and usually drops them like a sack of hammers right on the spot.  Honestly though were splitting hairs here over modern day hunting rounds.  ANY of them, placed well into the wheelhouse of a deer will do the job.  a 12 Ga. Slug at 30 feet was the most impressive impact shot I've ever taken.  Good God that was amazing to see.

Just heard about the new Nosler Long Range bullets....their performance range drops down all the way to 1300 fps where Hornadys stated performance to be optimum at 1800fps... And the Nosler has a ballistic tip for higher BC... I poked around looking for the components. They are offered in 165 gr and 180gr (I believe)...and showed at $58 a box. Expensive but look like they would open up some new opportunities for the 308 without having to go 30-06 or magnum...

I run the 150g Fusion MSR for deer.  Runs 2800 fps out of my 20" and shoots about 1.5" groups.

I use the 150g ttsx for elk, runs about 2700 fps but shoots right under 1" groups and the penetrate deep.

I've taken a dozen with Remington 150 gr JSP Corlokt and Federal Premium 165gr BTSP over the years.

Remington Core-lokt. It goes bang and the deer drop. My 308 is ok with either 150 or 180 grain bullets.

My hand loads using 165 Nosler Ballistic tip.  Given the 20" barrel on my little rifle, speeds are modest.  And the Ballistic Tip opens very fast and hard at these speeds.  I've used others with traditional cup-and-core bullets like the Hornady Interlocks.  In each case the deer was definitely dead, but there was a big difference in "time to expiration".  The Nosler BT often drops them dead literally in their tracks.  The cup and cores kills reliably, but they seem to typically run 75-100 yards before giving up the ghost....

I would not use the Nosler BT in a fast rifle or cartridge.  Using these at any magnum speed is asking for trouble.  The BT is simply too explosive to work well at 2900, 3000, 3100 fps.  But dialed down to 2600?  They are perfect.  Absolutely wonderful...

I don't reload, so all of my ammo is factory. Over the past few years, my favorite round for normal hunting conditions in both 308 and 30-06 (hunting NE Alabama deer) is the Hornady 125 grain SST. It's a reduced recoil load, and so far has performed absolutely flawlessly on deer. In the past 3 seasons I've killed 7 deer with that round at ranges from 70-180 yards and every one was DRT.

I have a few spots that offer close to 400 yard shots, in those places I shoot Hornady Superformance 150 grain SST's.

But the deer down here just don't get very big and I absolutely love the concept of a slightly small for caliber 30 bullet moving at reduced velocity. Or a large for caliber 223 bullet at standard velocities, I've also been lucky enough to take a slew of deer with 62 grain fusions over the last 5 or 6 years. Again, none went more than 30 yards with many being DRT.

I hunt with a 16" Bushy or 20" Armalite.  Both shoot the 165 grain Hornady SST over H4895 great.  The 20" rifle shoots 2760 FPS, the 16" at ~2650.  Both rifles have killed a lot of north Arkansas Ozarks whitetails over the years.

For shorter range light-precision I like Federal Fusions. I use them in my SCAR and are an absolutely devastating round on the deer I've taken with it. It's not meant to be a precision loading, but they sure seem to think they are.

For actual precision I'll be taking my FN SPR with Hornady's Precision Hunter 178gr ELD-X this year. I've used them in the past and found they shoot almost as good as FGMM while being actually designed for hunting. Thus far I've only taken one deer with the round, at shorter range it can be a bit explosive, but it's an overall awesome hunting cartridge that is both precise and capable pretty extreme hunting distances. Plus, while expensive, it's available at local Academy stores and I can grab a box if I'm ever in a pinch. A luxury not afforded with a lot of other premium rounds.

I have not hunted anything with my 308 yet, but this year I plan to go hog hunting with the 165 Hornady Interlock out of a 16" Bushmaster LR-308. This will be my go-to round for this rifle, unless I try out the 165 SST and like it better. For now I still need to find a load for the 165 Interlock first. Powder either IMR-4895 or IMR-4064.

Last probably 20 deer I've shot with a rifle has been Remington Corelokt Premium.  I get well under MOA out of my rifles with this ammo and at 308 speeds, they're perfect.  Really no need for super fancy bullets out of a 308 IMO.

Internal damage is pretty significant and they always go through and through.  My #1 priority is two holes, so as long as  I get that, I'm happy.  Whether or not it drops them on the spot, doesn't matter to me.  Two holes means a good blood trail.

I have switched to the 130 TTSX.  130 grainer over 48 grains of TAC runs a blistering 3150 fps out of my 22" Kimber 84M.

It is accurate and anchors deer and hogs.

What did you end up with for a COAL with the 130's, and did you use a crimp die like Barnes recommends?

Yes, I use a Lee Factory crimp.

Yep, the Lee was the one I got just for this load.  Not a big deal on the COAL.  I'll just start with the length listed in the Barnes Manual.  I'm interesting to see the difference between the 130's/150's on whitetails out to about 150 yards.

I was always a Varget or R-15 guy for .308, but it is hard to get enough extruded powder into the case to get top velocities with this light of a projectile.  So I switched to ball (TAC) for this load.  Works awesome.

I had a very dissapointing hunt last year using the 150 TTSX out of my .308 at avg MV of 2720 fps.

About 3/4 of the way down on this thread about shot placement you can read about the experience. (And a great couple of posts by frozenny)

If you are stuck on using the TTSX (I was drawn in by the pretty pics of the expanded bullets), I would definitely aim for the shoulder bone to initiate expansion.

I'm going back to using 165 Nosler BT at 2545 fps this year.  It shoots great and results in golf ball size exit holes.

I have boxes of 150 and 130 TTSX bullets, but truthfully, I'm soured on the experience with the all copper bullets out of a short barrel .308 and I couldn't get the 130 to group very well anyway.

That sucks.  I've already killed a few dozen deer with the 150 TTSX and not had a problem.  I'd have to check my notes to see how many.  I'm a very careful shooter, lots of big cornfields around me and I found a few years ago that tracking a deer in a 80 acre corn field, at night, to the sound of coyotes, is no fun.  (hit too high during archery, coyotes got her first)   I like the deer to drop.  I always shoot for the bottom 1/3 of the deer, and try to break at least one shoulder.

Check out the book, "Dead On!", by John Jeanneney.  Really an eye opener on arrow/bullet hit deer and why some deer drop right now, some run forever, and some get hit and live.  His other book about tracking wounded deer with dogs is interesting as well.

Having said all that, I'm going to try Hornady's GMX hunting bullets, and Noslers solid copper bullets at some point as well.  Always fun to load ammo and try it out.

On dear and hogs I use all copper bullets and aim for the shoulder.  For me, it is the most sure fire way to get an anchor shot.

I killed 3 deer last year with the 139gr GMX in .280.  One was a decent 10pt shot behind the shoulder at 250 yards on the run.  He made it about 50 yards.  2nd was a small buck (thought it was a doe) at 400 yards.  First bullet went in behind the shoulder, it stumbled, stopped, and the 2nd bullet entered the neck and exited behind the shoulder (quartering towards me, almost facing me).  The third was a good doe at 50 yards.  She was quartering towards me, I put it through the near shoulder and she made it about 30 yards.

I never recovered a bullet, and the internals were mush.  Exits were about the size of a half dollar.

After those 3 animals, I'm sold.  They are the most accurate bullet I've fired through my .280 so far.  I have some 165's to try in my 308, but haven't had the time to try them out.

My .308 deer load is the 180 grain Nosler Accu-Bond loaded over IMR4064 powder.  This is my all purpose load for hunting and tactical defense use. Doc Roberts recommends this bullet for barrier penetration use and it's a good hunting bullet too.

That is a relatively poor choice, because the SMK will sometimes behave like a fragmenting bullet, and other times it will act like a FMJ. It's not going to matter if you can guarantee a perfect shot, but I would use something specifically made for hunting to avoid the potential sub-par performance. There's a picture of the performance of the 175SMK in the Ammo FAQ but I can't link to it from work.

I shot 2 deer this morning with my 130 TTSX handloads in .308.  I'm not near maximum velocity, but I'd say the bullets opened up a bit more than the 150's.  The .308 Win. just kills deer, no drama.

Deer #3 for the season.  Same 130 TTSX load at 53 yards in heavy poplar.  3 ribs going in, both lungs, 3 vertebrae, couple ribs on the exit.  DRT.

ETA: that's an old wound on the neck from some jackass that thinks the neck shot is a good idea.
