In on one.

Yesterday morning, 2nd week of archery here.  Decent doe for these parts (110#'ish).  She came out a half hour after dawn with another doe who had 2 skippers in tow.  15yd shot facing me.  I put the arrow between the shoulder blades.  She ran 150yds.  When I opened her up, I saw that I'd broken her spine, knocking one vertebrae 3/4" to one side.  Dunno how she didn't fold on the spot.

75F here.  Got the hid off and boned her out by 2pm and was back in the tree at 3:30.

Moving to new thread...

Quoted:
Early muzzleloader season taken this morning.

.50 cal first shot landed further back than I'd have liked but it put him down to the ground. Second shot to the spine in his neck finished the job.

I've got skunked going after blacktail a couple times now, whitetail is a nice change.

Not a huge rack, but a nice 4x3 shape.

Nah, a pig maybe, but not a horse.
He went over 200. Biggest deer I've ever shot. There is a bigger one still running in the area I shot this one.
This one the antlers had a 19.5" outside spread. The one still running has at least a 22" spread and twice as high.

He had been eating a lot of corn and soybeans on my buddies farm. The meat tastes good, but isn't tender. Gonna be a lot of sausage and crockpot dinners made with him.

I shot a four point buck. Lol. No pic thread in the big game forum going, so I'll highjack the deer thread with a goat.

2016 Wyoming. Scored about 79. I did a euro mount via the WhiteBones Creations YouTube channel. Everyone says how bad they are to eat, but it's been pretty good.

I got some me time in today

One down and I still have a whitetail doe tag and an elk tag. Got up at at 4am and we were on the road by 5 and arrived at the hunting spot at 7 We were in the field at 7:30 legal shooting light. I shot this guy at approximately noon,it took three of us till 5pm to get him back to the truck. Just got home and uploaded the pic and it's time to hit a hot tub with a cold beer to sooth my back and the rest of my body....Rifle is a 18" 6.5 Grendel and I used the 123gr SST's, Shot was about 130yrds and placement was a little off as he was not going to stand still for me,but it slowed him down enough that I was able to put a second shot in his neck that dropped him in his tracks.

ETA 7pts on one side six on the other.

I got this 9 point tonight with at about 1740. I missed him once at about 90 yards as he grazed in some foliage. I thought he actually split, but he ended up coming in closer as he walked along an area that had been clear cut. I got him at about 60-70 yards and he fell down into the valley before getting up and walking directly under my stand. I couldn't reload my muzzleloader fast enough and he disappeared into the brush.

I lost his blood trail and backed off to drop my gear at the truck when I found him about 10 feet off the access road. Talk about luck. He went about 100-125 yards. My biggest deer ever and the second biggest deer I've seen in the woods.

I had a rather successful opening weekend.

Saturday morning I popped a fat doe with my 30-30. She came out of the woods at the edge of the clearing about 150 yards out and was acting super skiddish.  She stopped broadside for a few seconds so I took a shot.  Found her laying in the grass 15 yards from where I shot her.

Went back Sunday morning mostly just to sit and see what all would come out.  Right at sunrise a big boar came out, I couldn't resist.  Popped him with my 25-06 and it dropped like a ton of rocks.  I loaded him up in my Ranger and went back to my stand to kill some time.  At this point I had pretty much assumed that nothing else would be coming out so I started packing up my stuff making plenty of noise.  About 30 minutes later, the #1 buck on my hit list walks right out of the woods and just stands there. A nice wide (for East Texas) 9 pt with a crab claw on his front right. I scramble for my gun and let one rip, he drops dead in his tracks.

This is my first year on this lease and I've been busting my ass getting my area set up all year.  The season couldn't have started any better!

edit - its INCREDIBLY dry at my lease so dust gets everywhere when driving the roads.  my gun looks terrible and will need a bunch of TLC to get it clean again

Took this 6 opening morning of firearms (thought it was a basket 8 - 2 of them were certainly under an inch) with my 30-06 Savage. First Indiana deer it's taken. Killed several with it out of State.

Congratulations to everyone and goodluck to everyone still out there.

This has been my best deer season by far of 25+ years hunting.
Shot my first big buck finally although it was slightly bittersweet that he turned out to be a 6pt.
I dont hunt in an antler restriction area so I didnt bother counting points before the shot.Still a trophy to me was just expecting two more tines when I walked up to him.

My son was with me and had his first tag this year too so thankfully the buck came up on my side of the tree. But I was letting him blow on a grunt tube every once in awhile so hes happy to take that credit for the help.
The next morning we both filled our tags with a couple little yearling does. My sons first deer. Pretty awesome memories for me for sure.

Shot the doe at 129 yards while she looking back at me over her right shoulder.  She dropped where she stood.  Load was factory Federal 62 grain Fusion.  Rifle is a Rock River with a Burris Fullfield 3-9x42 with the E1 reticle.  I had to work for that doe.  I stalked her across 350 yards of open field to get to the fence line that I shot her from.

Shot the spike buck at 52 yards while he was on the run.  He folded up as soon as he was hit.
