So today I got my first deer with an EBR albeit in flat dark earth. She is a white tail doe who came busting out of the reeds in the slough right in front of where a buddy and I were standing for about five minutes. She just came out of there at a full sprint and I took a little too much of a lead on her but got her with the third shot at about 40-50 yards. The bullet was a 53gr Barnes triple shock.

This particular SCAR is also my 3 gun rifle. Last year I put down a deer with my three gun pistol now all I need to do is get something with the shot gun and I'll be set. That's something that I'm sure most three gunners haven't done.

shot her 77 yards out.  Not my biggest doe, but one of my favorites.  I was late getting out (maybe 30 minutes of daylight left) and thought the noise from climbing into my stand would ruin any chance I had.  So I laid prone behind a small dirt mound and waited.  Sure enough, 20 minutes later she came out. Wasn't sure i hit her at first (dust from the muzzle blast blocked my view initially), but a short blood trail me to her.

Edit: sorry about the potato quality picture.  I'm on my phone.  I'll post a better pic when I get home.

Got this one yesterday at 10 AM, about 60 yards with a Tikka T3 in .308 and 150 gr Winchester Power Point. Went about 30 yards before getting down. Then it decided slide to the creek after it died. With the help of a buddy and a bunch of rope hooked to a Honda 450 Foreman we finally had it on the truck at 3 PM.

9 point, 19 1/2" spread, field dressed at 165 pounds.

Quartering away out of a tree stand check out the entry hole!

Opening Morning 2.25 pt  Distance 7 yards, 12g Remington Copper Solid Slug - Reduced Recoil out of Mossberg 500 with rifled barrel - Neck Shot DRT

I wasn't even in my blind 10 mins before he came in on my left, walked right in front of me and I popped him.

Also took a big doe at 50 yards the next morning, jello'ed most of the vitals but she still ran about 15 yards, spun around on the ground and got back up.  Put another slug in her neck, the year of neck shots :P

Best hunting year in awhile, saw more deer this year in 2.5 days than I've seen in several years combined.  Just no big bucks.

I did the same thing last year at a upscale managed ranch I was invited to at the last minute. The ranch manager invited me out to help fill MLD tags and asked me to kill as many doe and mature culls I could. It was February and I hadn't planned on doing any deer hunting so only had my SBR with aimpoint on it. A big group of doe came in and I glassed them with binoculars and picked one out, noting that their was a button among them. Sat binocs down, deer walked behind bush and back out again, shot it and it ran about ten yards and was dead. The horror I felt when I walk up on it and saw nuts, I had shot the wrong deer. I was pretty embarrassed by it all but the ranch manager was cool about it and even invited me back out that evening, I politely declined. I now leave a spare bolt gun with a scope here at the ranch just incase.

He has protruding antlers, so I put a buck tag on him.  Fortunately a standard TX hunting license has 5 whitetail tags and 3 of those are for bucks or does.  I can still take 2 more bucks this year, so it's all good!

Hey me too

I have been trying to get this buck all season after I missed him with my bow.  The Land I hunt will be completely clear cut by next week so this may be my last chance to harvest a deer on it. Well this evening was the time.  got in the blind late but he came in right at dark.  With just enough light to see him I put a round right thru him.  he was quartering toward me and the bullet enter just behind the shoulder and exited at the last rib on the other side.

Let me also state that there is nothing like hearing the bullet impact the deer.  Thank you Governor McCrory and General Assembly.  He bucked a little and took off but hit the ground in less than 30 yds.  with a blood trail that a blind man could follow.

300 blk
247gr Cast from wheel weights
Powder coated Harbor Freight black
hollow pointed 1/8 inch diameter 3/4 inch deep
5.56 Blank converted to 300 blk
4.9gr RED DOT powder
980 fps

Remington AAC model 7
Form 1 titanium suppressor.

My testing of this round indicated that the hollow point would expand and break off from the base of the bullet which would then cause the remainder of the bullet to tumble.  My results on this deer seemed to mimic what I found in testing

entrance

Exit

Lung  I did not get as good of a picture of this as I would like but just to the right of my thumb is where it impacted

Liver.  I cannot be sure if this damage was because of the base or the tip breaking off, but my was it severe.

After having a bit of a rough hunting season.  I am happy with my results

They are out there.  I Have used a few prototypes that worked well.  But I tend to go against the grain and find things that people say cannot be done, but don't give good reasoning.  Then i go out to either prove to myself or to others whether it can be done or not.

I shot 2 last year with the same cast boolit, but it was not hollow pointed.  While it did take the deer down, i wanted better disruption.  It went straight thru out of my 1 in 8.5 twist barrel. I have found after harvesting 10 deer with subsonics, that a deep hollow point is needed to guarantee disruption.  I have found that the 300whisper/300 blk tumbling effect, does work, for non expanding rounds, but only if I am shooting the slower 1 in 10 twist.  the faster twist rate tends to make the round to stable to effectively tumble while still inside the deer with a broad side shot.

Just curious about some things

Why do you powder coat your bullets?

Also why did you decide to use an M200 blank case?

No problem.  Powder coating eliminates the need for conventional lube.  Also for me shooting cast thru my suppressor does result in lead build up in the blast chamber as well as unmelted bullet lube.  Powder coating eliminates that.  there is a thread on here as well as a couple of threads on castboolits.com about powder coating

powder coating thread

castboolits powder coating thread

As far as the blanks it all started with this thread

5.56mm blank to live round thread

I happen to have a lot of 5.56 blank rounds, plus i just like to be contrary.

I decided that I wanted to take a deer with my edc Glock 17 this year. I regularly target practice out to 100 yards, so I know what I'm capable of. I stalked around until I found three doe. I spent about half an hour sneaking up on them until I felt comfortable with the shot. I was in a braced position, using Remington 9mm 124gr Golden Saber. I waited until she presented a perfect broadside, aimed, and fired.

The bullet hit about an inch higher than I was aiming, tearing through the top of her heart and verring upwards, through her right lung and exiting  She immediately collapsed.

First deer ever.

My buddy and I were facing one way and this buck walked up 50m behind us. Broadside shot, saw it run injured and found it curled up about 75m away. Bullet took out both it's lungs and I found it lodge into it's opposite shoulder blade. The core went through but the jacket stayed back.

S&W M&P15 using Hornady .223 55grain SP with 14.5 perm barrel. The bullet did it's job but I'm going to get some nice stuff for the next one in case of further shots.

I got this beautiful MT Mule Doe on my 7th or 8th straight day of hunting. On previous days I saw lots of deer but they were either in areas I didn't have tags for and or in areas I didn't have permission to hunt. I shot this one across a coulee at 382 yards because she was the first taggable Mule doe I saw within my ability to hit all season. It was about a mile drag to the truck but that was made easier by the Skedco litter and the snow. And once I had 38 more pounds of venicen in the deep freeze the distance of the drag didn't matter so much any more. I would have had probably 45 pounds but the SST bullet just came apart in her shoulder. The butcher said that there was nothing left either shoulder or upper arms but blood shot and fragments of lead and copper. I finally loaded up some Barnes 168gr TTSX's so that shouldn't be as much of a problem anymore. The resulting velocity at 382 yards was 2380fps with 2075ft/lbs of energy. So even at medium range the SST comes apart when it hits bone.

got a couple Does this weekend (we are allowed to shoot one a day) now that the pressure to get some meat in the freezer is of, its time to concentrate on getting something with some big antlers!

got a small doe on Sat, if I knew how small it was I would have probably passed on it but i was shooting from one ridge to another and its hard to scale a deer that way. oh well, it'll sure be tasty! shot it with 30-06 150gr federal cheap stuff out of my beat around savage 110. 50 yard shot, she was hiding everything from the shoulder back behind a tree and had spotted my movement when i raised the gun so i shot through the shoulder. she dropped right there, I knew it was going to be bad when i got to her and the tree behind her had chunks of meat sticking to it... blew a baseball sized hole through the other side, wont do that again!

then got a good sized doe (for this area) on Sun, 100lbs dressed. shot was quartering, so the exit was a little far back and it just barely clipped the stomach which made cleaning it really fun... shot with the same ammo and rifle combo. shot was about 90 yards, she ran approx 30 yards and dropped.
