Come visit man, it’s a workout. I’ve started to make my POTA’s 24 hour events. That’s another challenge. UTC midnight is at 4pm, so it cuts the day in half anyway. I don’t really get much 40m DX propagation until 9pm or later. 20m usually turns on around noon or 1pm. Only once have I been successful in banging out a whole POTA activation in that noon to 4 window.

And just a FYI to all. You can also spot yourself using JS8CALL. It will push it to the POTA spot page.

I’ll try and post a picture of what that command looks like

Wife and I took a road trip to a lake.

Did a "late shift" activation on 14.308

quickly turned into a pile-up, 44 QSO's including PR, 2 spain, and a bunch in Canada.

Bald Eagle landed in a tree, right in front of us, and saw 2 tiny baby deer on the way out,

It was a great evening.

fresh water ground plane was beaming N.E.

Well, ain't it a small world? I had a QSO with you right after the eagle, maybe the very next one, as I heard you tell a guy it just landed. Our QSO was at 01:14 UTC.

Thanks! I sold a Colt M16 around 5 years ago to buy that car. I guess if I'd have looked at your QRZ page, I'd have recognized some of the photos you'd posted here.

This weekend is the quarterly POTA support your parks event, so tons of parks and chasers are out and about. I ran 3 parks today and am catching a ferry to hopefully activate 3 or 4 more Lake Erie island references tomorrow as we'll.

I believe it stems from the 2016 ARRL National Parks on the Air event, some people who enjoyed that decided to make it a year round informal event and include state managed parks and areas as well. It took off from there.

I’m going to try to go to K-7201 at UTC0000 in an hour or so. I should be able to give it 3 hours. I’m going to try a vertical at the waters edge. 14.280-14-297. Park has only been activated twice.

That was awesome! First time I’ve worked at salt water edge. Got about 100 QSO’s and a bunch of new states. Worked every part of the country from Florida to NY to California, Midwest and PNW. Very cool

Brought KX2 and my little endfed wire with me to South Carolina.   Love having a kit that fits into a carry-on.  Activated two parks this weekend.  First QSO was to Hungary, that was my only DX.  I generally work more EU portable from the Midwest  Still good times and always amazed at what five watts will do.  Did get a CW QSO with a buddy back in MN. Might activate some more this week depending on the weather.

We had a good day also.

Did an activation earlier at one of our favorite parks,   got lots of park to parks,  . . . .then went to a nice restaurant, then she wanted to go eagle spotting at another park an hour away.

That's when I looked on my phone, and worked you.

I also spotted you on DX WATCH, and heard your pile-up all the way home

Anyone aware of a way to spot yourself via sms?

I know the SOTA guys have a number of clever ways to spot themselves.

I know the JS8 command works.
Blacked out portions is where your callsign goes.

No cell signal. And QRP calling for 45min trying to catch the first bite just sucks.

SOTA has a sms gateway and can even spot via inreach devices.

I wish the reverse beacon network could decode a simple POTA command and spot you. Most all Hf radios have a Cw memory keyer. Even if one didn’t know CW preload your memory slots with your parks spot data and send it.

It does that, sort of.  The catch is you have to have your activation scheduled ahead of time.  The site will compare callsigns on the RBN to those with a scheduled activation and then spot you on the POTA spots page.  It also checks the current spots and will respot you even if you change bands.

Will it show as a CW spot always?

and is there a template for how the CW command line should look?

There's no command, you just call "CQ CALLSIGN" and it picks you up like a standard RBN spot.  So it will spot you on the frequency where you were heard, and the mode spotted is the one the RBN heard (CW, FT8, RTTY, etc.), so it doesn't work for SSB.

The POTA page basically just pulls everything off the RBN and compares it to the POTA scheduled activation list, if it finds a callsign calling CQ match inside the scheduled activation time window, then it will post the spot to the POTA site.

Yes, it posts the mode and frequency the RBN skimmer station actually hear your call on.  It even posts the callsign of the skimmer station as the "spotter".

Here's and example I just pulled of the POTA spot page, it shows what an RBN generate spot looks like, in this case a CW activator.

Attachment Attached File

ETA: The POTA site will also update active spots for a station if the RBN picks them up and their old spot hasn't fallen off the POTA page (takes 30 minutes without a re-spot).  So say you spot yourself or have someone spot you working SSB and it gets your activation on the page.  If you then change over to running CW on a different frequency or even different band and the RBN hears that,  The POTA page will re-spot you based on the RBN spot as working CW on whatever frequency your now using.

Hiking in now to K-7193. Park has only been activated once. I plan to be on 20m SSB for about 2 hours in about 2 hours. Likely won’t have service to self spot. 14.287 is the target freq if clear, but I try to find an opening between 14.283 and 14.297.
