I can usually hear you too, but not tonight.

I guess that is why they call it ham radio and not talkin radio

I was hearing NCS 10-15 dB over s9 but there was some QSB and QRN probably from some thunder storms in KS. If we were on longer, the band would have gone long but we'd have more QRN to deal with.

About 15 feet. It's also pretty much parallel to the ground, which i know is not ideal.  I'm fixing that in a couple of weeks.  Feed point is going to about  40 ft and  the end about 20 when I'm done.

Are you aware of the different power settings on the 891? They are confusing. I think it is SSB Power. HF power adjusts digital modes or something.

I was portable on an 891 with a quarter wave vertical on a ground spike. However, i think Net Control and I are about the perfect distance for 40m, we pretty much always have a direct line even in bad conditions.

If we get a good night with low noise on 40m I will shoot you an IM and see if we can try again.

See above for layout, orientation is NNE.

And yes, SSB power is at 100w.

Yeah 15' horizontal is gunna limit your range for sure. If nothing else, grab a battery and head to the woods. I do the net portable as long as it is not raining. My home antennas are not ideal and I have a high noise floor.

Clear skies in Missouri.

Turns out there is not much whip in the air on 30m with the sporty 40 coil. Lol

That is why I prefer using a wire on the end of the whip, attached to a fishing pole. It works better than my coil.

Sorry, I just saw this. Thank you for the response. I was wondering what you could possibly have for a ground plane, but that makes perfect sense 👍

Your signal reminded me of a dying battery in a flashlight. Started out stong then dropped at the end. Next transmission, you started out strong again and then faded.

To be honest, I kind of expected it might not hold up with the amp.

I've done it more than once. It would heat up, SWR  would climb and the amp would trip out. I finally made a new transformer with three stacked FT240-52 toroids. They have have a higher curie temp and 'hopefully' should handle the power. I'll know as soon as I get my station put back together.

It's a 140-43, and it should handle the 70w I am pushing into it. I will wind it again, and use a heavier magnet wire this time.

I got 10' of some sort of "sprinkler wire" from the hardware store for like $4. It has 6 or 8 thin wires in it.

I just got that and removed the individual wires. Used three of them to wind the 9:1. Have extras for another build.

Has held up to 100W on a 140-43 on my random wire.
