Excellent guide.

The "Defense" section leaves a lot to be desired, but it wasn't written by an arfcom member.....................

Very interesting.
I just put in a $1K dollar order with the LDS cannery today.
It is just a basic starter order for food storage.
I will read this manual and figure out what I really need and make another order soon.

Definitely.  I gave a presentation to a ward (like a church group) on Preparing and it was a real wake up call for me that not everyone thinks the same way I do.  The lady had heard me give a talk at my own local ward and asked me to talk to her area about things.  When I asked if it'd be alright for me to talk about self defense issues, they wanted to steer clear of it for the most part.  Most of them seemed to believe that since they were in a "good" area they'd just have to help take care of each other and the bad stuff wouldn't get to them.  I wasn't about to argue as I already knew I was pushing the comfort limit of several of them already.  Hopefully in time...  But hey, at least I was able to get them to compromise on the title of the presentation...

They wanted "Emergency Preparedness" which is sooo typical.
I wanted to use the line from Patriots "Suriving the Coming Collapse"
We ended up with "Practical Survival" and I was happy with it ;-)

PS - This was also an interesting experience for me in that it made me actually think for the first time about how open I should be with others about my own preparations.  I really enjoy talking about this stuff with other people, but had never been in the position to talk in that much detail.  It made me evaluate how much to leave out or mislead as far as what I have done for my own family.

You know...I was raised LDS, I have been inactive for 5 years. I still believe, but what drove me away from attending was the disconnect many LDS members have between their religous views and real life.

I have that in book form around here somewhere?
It'd be a good time to look through it again.
I bought three books, when I ordered.
One for me, and one each for the kids.
Reading material in hand, is easier for me to pick up on a whim to read than the PC.
YMMV

Doubt they go into firearms.  The LDS leadership tends to leave that arena up to the individual.  Most likely to stay out of the government's crosshairs and not be listed as an "extremist" organization.

An individual LDS member, on the other hand, would have no problem addressing the issue.  Just checked and the article seems to have been published by an individual not necessarily representing the church leadership.

"it made me actually think for the first time about how open I should be with others about my own preparations"...

I'm glad you brought that up. We'd be negligent if we didn't at least try to inform them. I live in liberal town, CT. USA and people think I'm just off the wall with stocking up non perishables, portable water purifiers and food grade storage containers, an industrial food saver vacuum packer, cold weather gear, MRE heaters, solar NOAA radios, hand held GPS, salt, sugar, seasonings, M4A3, Henry 357 Big Boy, Taurus Judge and ammo, investing in G&S American eagles AND junk silver Kennedys and Franklins, you get the picture, I've started preparing, I have kids and grand kids and want to protect them, we've already seen just about Biblical things happening over night and by the minute right here in the States and world wide. Never before in our history had we faced such threats from within to our democracy, the frigen UN has more influence on our Constitutional rights that the American people, demanding bans on our second amendment, Amadinejad allowed to stand on US soil and slurring all kinds of anti-American crap... mere blocks from the WTC... then natural disasters, energy crisis, terrorism, wars, deseases, China the new Super power lowering our credit rating...the USA, A THIRD WORLD DEBT NATION!

NASA is warning of increase solar storms and earth magnetic pole shifts...now several large States are on the black list for Bankrupcy, and California is in the lead...then we have slurping Barney Franks telling other States we need to bail them out...it just doesn't end. We have the Speaker of the House attacking the CIA, has she gone our of her mind? Then we have the Vice President IDENTIFYING secret emergency shelters...and Obama setting murderers free who killed 17 sailors, then he sets another free and another...

My own family, and I'm dumbfounded by this...especially one of my younger sisters, a young mother of four young kids) who laughed jokingly at me the other day when I was unloading food and storage containers, still hasn't woken up to prepare after being diagnosed with breast cancer and now ignorantly denying the ramifications and consequences of Congress and Obamanation pushing Socialized health care, and what that would do to this nation. God bless her for surviving as long as she still is with cancer, but having cousins in Sweden who live with socialized health care and the horror stories, she's one of those who still gets that tingly feeling all over for Obama.

Even after she lost thousands from investments when I told her to get out of the markets when the obvious was happening, she ignored it and still refuses to open her statements, says I watch too much Glenn Beck.

If just these alone are not enough to wake people up, but yet they see it happening and hear the forcasts, knowing China now wants a new world monetary system with them leading the way, and the US, a mere $11 Trillion dollars in "new" debt, if they still wish to believe MSNBC and CNN and radical politicians misleading them, then, like the guy wrote in that church survival guide someone here posted..."its on their heads!"

My sister is a sweet, loving person, but ignorant, as is the rest of my family,  well, she'd say the same about me the way I'm prepping for what i'm convinced is coming. I say ignorant because she knows the story of my grandfather who immigrated here in 1917, got married, pumped out a bunch of kids, then during the last Great Depression, he committed suicide because he lost everything and couldn't support his family...my father was about 11 y/o, they lived on lard and katchup sandwiches, that was when they could get white bread. Every now and then more well to do people would give them chickens to slaughter, but they needed the eggs more. So, our family history should be enough to convince anyone why the need to prepare well ahead of the game.

in between typing this, I just got off the phone two minutes ago with my oldest brother, he asked what I did last weekend, told him I went up to the firing range, zeroed my M4, then the questions, then the critism that I'm blowing my money on unnessesary survival gear and bulk foods. No, I'm not blowing it, I'm investing it, I've already lost $10K in two 5 star muni funds and two college savings funds for my kids...what do I tell them when I say "I put the money in the bank, and now its gone?"

Except for my oldest daughter, lives on Tyndall AFB w/ 2 babies and Airman (F15 tech), she's adding it all up, she sees whats happened and whats coming, but my two younger ones (11 and 17) are just scared of all the stuff happening and won't disguss it (too much anxiety) and their liberal mother (we're divorced) discourages me from teaching them, but I will say they're gung ho about leaning how to safely handle a firearm and learning self defense! Thats a start.
My other older brother and his wife are struggling financially, I've discussed all this with them and advised them to stock up on at least the basics, but they cry poverty, can't afford it, can't harly pay the rent...yet, she has her weekly single malt scotch, hes got 3 beers a night, they eat better than me with roast beast one night, then next a nice ham dinner, so I tell 'em, just pick up a case of something each week and store it. Is it apathy? Without knowlegde, we are blind and unprepared and doomed to repeat history.

I don't care how I look to people anymore, let em think what they want, but my door will be the first that banged on when the lights go out and stores accept only barter or precious metals, thats if theres anything left on the shelves and at the gas pumps.

So, when I read this,"it made me actually think for the first time about how open I should be with others about my own preparations"... ...

it hit home, made me think of a grandfather I never knew, who took his own life because of failure or inability to prepare in a finacial crisis started by others much like we see today... and who only last year had a grave stone placed on his grave, he was burried as a pauper back then in basically unmarked graves with others...

it made me think that no matter how much we sound or look nuts to everyone else, including the Obama worshippers still waiting for him to walk on water, we try and try again to advise those who we love, but we can't make em drink the water.

In ending, the persons who sees and hears more than anyone in my family is my cousin in Sweden living under Socialist rule...and then, my elderly mother, blind and 85% hearing loss since late 1960's, they know what's ahead...why can't people with ears to hear...and eyes to see?

Great post, than you!

Lots of interesting stuff, and I'll definitly be digging through it...but has anyone else noticed the firearms section is criminally wrong? How many times have we heard the myth about shotguns not needing to be aimed at CQB distances, and how many people has that gotten killed I wonder...? Yet anoither "survival" type guide with a couple of pages of dangerously incorrect gun info that some author felt it neccessary to irresponsibly include. Like so many others, he should have stuck to what he knew.

The original article is one LDS ward's plan.   It doesn't represent the Church's views on firearms (it keeps conspicuously silent on the matter).  Yeah, it does show how myths perpetuate themselves.

I wonder how many of us LDS folk are wandering around here on arfcom?  I think our membership will increase if a disaster does come.  My dad once told me, "I don't mind you being a Mormon.  In fact, I plan to join your church too.  When the end of the world comes you guys are going to have all the guns and ammo."

Hopefully it doesn't come to that.  I'd rather baptize him when he sees how good the Church has been for me and my family.

I was baptized LDS, but have been inactive for close to 30 years.  My mother and sister are both active (sister lives in SLV- Herriman- with her ever burgeoning extended family....).  Mom has been helping me with my food storage, which is just getting off the ground.  Anyway, I mentioned to her about my thoughts on this whole SHTF/EOTWAWKI scenario, and my preparations for what may come.  She seemed impressed with how much I have retained, and how much in the way of independant thinking I've done that parallels current church dogma.  But, she also mentioned that, in my preparations, I should store bullets, too.  I don't think, nor do I wish for anyone to imply, that the LDS religion is extremist, but they are by far the most prepared for reality- or eventuality.

I am also LDS. Born and raised. The Church stays away from recommending anything about firearms. We can and should make decisions in that area on our own. You will find that many members are very well armed. We have an obligation to protect ourselves and others as we see fit.

The Church has been promoting preparedness for as long as I have been around (53 years). We need to be prepared for any disaster whether it be man made or natural. It may only be something as simple as not having a job for an extended period of time. Whatever it may be, we have been told to be prepared to take care of ourselves and our family whatever comes along. Something I need to continue to work on.

Feel free to contact the local Church leaders in your area with any questions you may have concerning preparedness, food storage or any other questions you may have. Contact information can be found in the phone book under Churches, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I would also be more than happy to answer any questions you might have.

Later,
Paul

The area "just south of SLC" doesn't strike me as a very LDS place, at all.  Sounds more to me like you just happen to live in a less welcoming area, period.
