Had some tree work done. The tree guys reseeded the disturbed ground but didn't have anything to even out the ruts and track marks from the skidsteer grapple, truck & chipper. There were also ruts on the road shoulder (part of our yard) that also needed to get evened out to avoid issues when mowing.
Could not find a good turf roller so ended up with a 24x60" agri-fab roller. Light weight metal, but a bit over 1K lb. when water filled. It will do til I can find a better one. Not sure if it is worth it to rebuild the frame to use real bearings and a longer tongue considering the thin metal on the roller. Attached File The short tongue makes turning while backing (& sharp turns) a real pain. |

Plowed under the veggie garden and my nephews deer plot.
Picked up the bucket with the grapple and took the whole mess to the other end of the property to build a new road on the property line. Attached File And made good progress. Another .2 miles of road roughed in. I also found a spring on the property I didn't know about. In other news, I almost got the tractor stuck in a spring... Attached File |

Not a great pic, but I found a ditch. Had my mulching head on . Its dang near impossible to use it as leverage to back/push yourself out. Also had a tree between the right track and bumper. Had to winch it out.... Right track has nothing but air under it, had all the weight of the machine on left track (Soft ground and it just spun) and the mulcher head.

I hated to do it, but I had two huge walnuts pushed out of my side yard where I intend to build a shop. I would guess around 2' and 3' diameters. Over the last two (partial) Saturdays I have almost all the small limbs burned and the bigger limbs stacked to be cut down for firewood. Using the tractor to move and pile the "poles".

Why do people mow a pasture instead of grazing it? I have never understood that. I would love to have that much grass in my pasture.

No critters, no fence & no one interested in using it for hay. The land is 12 miles from our house, the wife's 20 acre inherited portion of what was a family farm. I mow so it doesn't end up covered in poison ivy, briars & sweetgum trees. Fields make up a bit less than half the area, the rest is trees & a small pond.

I have cattle, definitely not easier. But the cattle produce something of value so the additional effort isn't wasted. Cattle really need to be checked on daily so in his case, being 12 miles away, and only having about 10 acres of grass, the benefit doesn't justify the time & expenses. The cattle I have are at my house (er, my house is in the middle of the pasture), and it's still hard to justify the work. Finishing beef steers I will make a few hundred dollars per head this year but that's because live cattle prices are up finally. I feed the steers twice a day, I have to get up 30 minutes early so I can put on barn clothes and go feed, then come back to the house and change for work. Evening chores are a little longer bc I feed the steers and go out in the pasture to check the cows. I rotationally graze and the cows on pasture get moved every 3-4 days. It takes an extra 20 minutes to move them. Checking the cows daily has kept minor health issues from ballooning into big problems. And that doesn't count the time for making improvements, fixing things, and special stuff like working the cattle (vaccines etc). It all adds up, it's really not profitable until you get into the 40+ head range. And 10 acres of grass will probably only support 7ish cow/calf pairs sustainably in his climate, maybe less. Definitely fewer if he retains steers to background and/or finish them. |

Went over some of the fields I bush hogged a couple weeks back with the 3038e using the Z930M we picked up the end of last year. The wife wants to convert the portion of the acreage near the road to "park like" trim & the zero turn was to be "her" machine. So far she is still gun shy.
Looking away from the road. The area just mowed is where we get the heaviest grass growth. It didn't phase the Z930M. Was cutting at 3.5" to see if the mower would bogg down. It didn't. Raised it to 4.5" for the rest of the mow. Attached File Looking back towards the road & sister-in-law's place. Less active growth, but lots of holes. Attached File Not shown is the cutting done under/between trees. |
