My guess is the disgruntled group would be the usual suspects that reside in the sh***y neighborhoods of any major city. As for what will set them off is anyones guess. It doesn't take much of an excuse for them to participate in a little looting, shooting, and burning.

My guess is that it will happen in either SF / Oakland or Los Angeles if it happens anytime soon. Civil unrest seems to be brewing in both of those cities. If it would spread beyond there is the big question.

I don't see it in Frisco so much but Oakland absolutely, LA next, then?

How about it starts when Obama is found to be a Kenyan by birth and SCOTUS rules him out of office.

Never happen. Somebody could show up with video and notarized statements by a dozen heads of state and it wouldn't make a gnat's worth of difference. It won't be brought up, SCOTUS won't ever see the case, and any evidence found will be disappeared. TPTB couldn't stand any of that shit seeing the light of day, regardless of party affiliation, so nothing will be done to change what's already been publicly stated.

How about we work on the crap he's doing now to get rid of him; it's not like there isn't a mountain of it.

For the record, I think it's pretty likely that he was born in Kenya and that his mother, America hater though she was, saw the advantages of li'l Barry being an American and got him the hell over to Hawaii chop chop, before anybody figured out where he was really born. Down the road, when the entire future of the Democrat party isn't on the line and it can be quietly swept under the rug of history, maybe the truth will come out. Don't look for it before then, you'll just end up tired and angry.

Back on topic, it'll probably be racial animosity. The left has been stirring that pot like an infinite improbability drive for several decades, and they've hammered it into at least four generations that everything bad that happens is because teh eebil white man hates anybody who isn't both white and a man. As people continue to get tarred unfairly with that brush they will eventually refuse to put up with it any longer, which will fuel the certainty of those who blame them that the claims must be true (the idiocy that, if you deny it, you must be admitting it)

Class envy is probably the second most likely candidate, as they've also been hammering the "evil rich" peg pretty hard the past couple of years.

May you be poor in misfortune,
Rich in blessings,
Slow to make enemies,
quick to make friends,
But rich or poor, quick or slow,

Well said, I agree. And the other part of why he doesn't want to produce the documents is because he is listed as Caucasian on the "birth" documents his mother set up for him. It's not only better to be an American she figured, it's also better to be white, Ironically both of which she hates as the leftist radical ideologue scumbag she is. Another interesting side not about Barry's mama, there were nude photographs all over the internet. It speaks more to character than anything, and dishonors further an office that will forever be stained by this traitorous lying scumbag.

The SHTF is coming, and the people that riot will destroy their own infrastructure and community a la Watts, Chicago, Memphis riots in the 60's. I hope it stays there and we don't have to drop 'em when they decide to expand to other neighborhoods. Because It will put me in a hell of a spot...I'll have to decide what caliber to use LOL!

Back to topic. THIS.

Definitely food and fuel.

I suspect that if any major city starts having issues with services (other than welfare) and/or there's a food shortage, EVERYONE there will be 'disgruntled.'

Sure, some groups might light the fuse first, but the mass loss of jobs and a lack of basic resources will soon have everyone else following.

Look at L.A. and it's problems over an obviously good shoot by a cop defending his life. The people feel the tension in the country and are just looking for an excuse.

I predict that it won't necessarily be one thing but rather anything that can be used as an excuse to riot and loot. Once it happens in a few places it will spread more rapidly as people think "hey we can do that too".

The who? Well, the same trash that always starts it.

I was just saying yesterday that I can almost feel the tension in the air right now. It's like everyone knows what is about to happen and they are just waiting for someone else to move first. Of course that is probably just my tinfoil talking.

It took mere hours for looting to start after the natural gas explosion in CA yesterday. The cause of it? Only the opportunity to get away with it without repercussions.
Link Posted: 9/10/2010 5:00:53 AM EDT
I think there could be any number of catalysts. The city settings will be predicatable enough - and will largely mirror riots of the past IMO. But depending upon the setting and circumstances could penetrate less likely to be violent sections of society too. There are many potential triggers right now for implosion IMO.
Food, Fuel, and Fear will drive people to act desperately. A simple long term power outage could wreak havoc. Grocery stores not being operational would cause many, many people to panick. It seems many people like to fantasize about the zombies or outsiders coming to their area from the inner cities to cause trouble and having to subdue an abstract criminal element. But the reality is it could be the people you currently are near. It's easy for me to picture a cascade of events that could be concerning in even the seemingly safest of areas and sections of society.

It's hard to say and you may have a hard time distiguishing the bad guys from the friendlies.

I do not know which side of the issue you are talking about.

The Koran burning thing is just a publicity stunt,IMHO... This so-called preacher got what he wanted, TV time!!!! Besides that, the last time we had Christian whites burning U.S. cities was way back in the Civil War and those doing the burning were cotton-picking Yankees ! Man, if I could get my hands on Sherman!!!

On the other side of the issue, I am concerned with the following groups: Nation of Islam, Welfare recipients-when the checks stop coming, the illegal immigration situation and when Obama is voted out of office!

I am an inner-city pastor and things are rough in the inner-city right now. Unemployment among young black men is close to 95%, most just are standing on the side of the street doing whatever comes to mind to get money.. I have had to pull my Concealed Glock32/26 more in the last 20 months than in the 8 years before that!!!

Hope it never comes to any of the situation above,

This!!!! In the long run, I beleive it will be across the board. I think it will start with the so-called have-nots.

I also think the have nots will be the trigger although I think our country is ripe for panic to spread quickly once it starts. All it would take is for the food supply being temporarily cut off to a large city and we would see SHTF within about a week. I think california is a very likely starting point given factors such as the serious budget problems in the state, housing market, etc.

Oh and I have to say for the guy who is the inner city preacher... I tip my hat to you for doing something to try to help the problem while most of us just complain about it!

Your time line is pretty optimistic,IMO,as has been pointed out already, the looting started within hours of the SF fires

48 hours tops..........if you are in one of the major metropolitan areas, good luck and may your guardian angel be on duty.

Link Posted: 9/10/2010 8:41:21 AM EDT
yes a week might be too generous in some areas but in my neck of the woods, I think a week is about right. I live in the burbs pretty far removed from Dallas so it will take about that long for the crapola to filter out to my area. On the other hand, downtown Dallas would probably take about 12 hours.
Link Posted: 9/10/2010 8:56:51 AM EDT
Right after IKE hit Houston, up in a posh area 20mi north of Houston known as The Woodlands, most everyone was fairly orderly, but clearly on the edge - all within a few hours after the winds had died down. Once everyone got out of their holes and started driving around for supplies, etc., all it took was someone to cut in line or get out of the line and complain to the attendant (of a gas station, hardware store, Home Depot, etc.) and all hell broke loose. Police cars were stationed at nearly EVERY open gas station, Home Depot, or grocery store because lines were dozens of cars long or 100's of people long. All transactions were handled in cash only and anyone going inside a Home Depot was escorted by a Home Depot employee (who were few in the first place). If that was a crapola neighborhood, then it'd be the same but just a lot sooner IMHO.

I believe wherever you are, once you leave the relative safety and quiet of your neighborhood "enclave" and head for the strip malls and major intersections, you will find big problems immediately unless you are way out in the country. Even in the small bedroom community town I lived in, thigns were tense. If you could stock up and hold down your fort, you might survive thru a 1-2 weeklong SHTF without having to venture out, assuming you had sufficient electricity, gas, and water. But beyond 1-2 weeks, I thinkthe crapola will come looking for you. At night.

There seems to be lots of different issues which could cause social/civil unrest.

Financial Issues (The have's and have not's)

Illegal aliens issue seems to be on the forefront right now

Gay / Lesbian rights issues have a few peoples attentions.

Racial tensions have been bubbling under the surface for years.

When it gets right down to it, they all have a similar underlying thread that ties them together.

Illegal aliens are greatly sucking our resources dry in the form of new schools, hospital care and victims of their crimes. (Money)

Racial issues seem to be greater in poorer areas. You don't see rich non-whites rioting in the streets. (Money)

Now these are just my opinions, but it seems to be the have's versus the have not's.
Link Posted: 9/10/2010 9:22:22 AM EDT
I live in a similar bedroom community but am about an hour away from the inner city. To give you an idea of how removed I am, we still have people with horses and cattle within a couple miles of my home so I don't see it getting bad quickly in my area. However, I would expect folks to be on edge when trying to find supplies in a SHTF. That is why we have a 1-2 month food supply on hand at all times so we could just hunker down and wait. We could fairly comfortably go a month with no gas and power. We have small generator with close to 100 gallons of fuel (if you count boat and vehicles). It will run about 5 hours on a 1 1/2 gallons. We also have a small solar system that would give us silent power if things really got bad and we didn't want to risk running a generator. We have a pool so water is not a huge issue either, just a hassle. For heat, We have fireplace and a propone heater to protect against freezing in winters which are forunately pretty mild in Texas.

Now in a protracted SHFT situation of say a month or more, if/when the trouble elements start filtering out into my area, that is where the fight or flight decission we all dread would come into play. I'm inclined to stay put and defend the house since it is set up pretty well to handle SHTF as long as it isn't a total meltdown scenario.

I was having lunch with a friend of mine; we both started prepping about the same time. We were pretty much in agreement with you, the bad things are coming, it is a forgone conclusion. We don't see how we, as a country can avoid it, at this point.

When the brainwashed folks can't find food in their neighborhood stores, it's inevitable that they will assume that all the goods were sent to the "rich" areas. Once they're done burning their neighborhood, they'll be on their way to suburbia looking to buy food...and when those stores are empty, well they're going to lash out on anyone nearby. You might see some pushing and shoving and altercations in typical neighborhoods, but if the hoodrats are around you'll see outright violence.

Who it will be will all depend on the nature of the SHTF. Sure, the usual suspects will be always be involved, and there are scenarios where it is only the welfare class, but there are numerous scenarios where it would be pretty much anybody within 3 days.

^THIS^ Yes, and also, remember, never let a good crisis go to waste.

Political extremist nut-jobs will be out there preaching hate and getting people all worked up into a frenzy.
"I heard they diverted all of the food and fuel that was coming here to the po' neighborhood over to [name a rich place] area!!"
In this day and age they may even provide the busses for them to go protest!!

I'm trying to think about what has changed since the race riots of the 60's.
The one thing that would bring violence to the suburbs more quickly than some think, would be the fact that the "poor" are much more mobile now.
They have more cars, which was not nearly as prevalent back in the 60's.
Gang Banger-types are certainly VERY mobile.

The initial threat in the 'burbs would be drive-bys, snatch and grabs, B&Es, Home Invasions, and any other opportunistic behavior.
edit: if those are successful, they will step it up, and focus on the areas where they have had the best luck.

While the lemmings are protesting in the "rich people's" shopping center, led by their favorite extremist rabble-rouser (community organizer) ,
the hoodlums/gangs/scoundrels would be prowling middle-class neighborhoods looking for easy pickings.

Will you wait until they are at your front door?

Economic/monetary/banking collapse will cause disruptions in the food and fuel distribution system. This is when the dam breaks and the cockroaches come out of their holes.

A few riots are necessary to solidify the current folks in power.. Hitler was elected on a platform of Law & order, public safety- National Health care & a promise of change from the terrible economic plight that the country was in & eventual gun control.... Hmmm... sounds a bit familar lately..
Those with opposing views, gun owners, hoarders...... were swept up, all with the support of the patriotic public.. even the kids turned in parents! ...the riots will be just enough to put fear into the sheep..
I guess that I am getting old & jaded, but I think that the scale has tipped to Socialism. There are not enough independent folks left to make a difference in the voting booth.. I hope that I am wrong, but I have never seen just HOPE as a very good plan..

I find it interesting that in Cali, LAPD shoots a Hispanic day laborer that threatens numerous people including women and children and then when confronted by 2 LAPD Bike Officers, both with Hispanic Surnames, lunges at the officers and is quickly dispatched with a couple to the chest. Move forward a few days and all of a sudden this shitbag is an upstanding "citizen" that would never hurt anyone..

The ensueing protest and riot turns out to be supported and led by the French Communist Workers Party.. WTF?? This was reported on KTLA 10pm news and was totally breezed over... AGAIN WTF??? WHY is this shit not being screamed from the mountain tops??? This is where the real social unrest will come from.. It is OUTSIDERS that are driving all of this bull shit!!!

Just my 2 cents

Peak oil which will lead to, as another poster said, expensive fuel, which will lead to the cost of food going up as agribusiness runs on fuel, which will lead to increased prices of food, which will lead to a shortage of food as the oil runs out and the agribusiness industry can no longer provide enough food for everyone. then the whole country and world are in a lot of trouble.

we are one spark away.

I agree with this in the long term, but we could wake up tomorrow with major riots going on due to other reason.

Are you saying we should pick them off at a distance?

Proactive neighborhood patrols?

The hole he has already dug for us is so deep we will never get out. Most people are too stupid (yes, I said stupid) to realize it.

AMEN.

If the middle class (the taxpayers) ever truly revolted, and hit the street, then you would have yourself some real action!

I think these are the group of people to really worry about. This demographic contains the people who have had it to lose it, and therefore are very dangerous if they ever wake up long enough to realize that things are in the sewer and they are the ones in serious shit. The middle class contingent, which I believe describes the majority of the posters here on SF, are who I believe to be the "second wave" of trouble should SHTF. I believe this second wave of people to wake up and realize the S truly has hit the F would be the most-dangerous because the represent the majority with the most to lose, and the most brain-power to wrap around ways to overcome their plight. Some will do it honorably, but I believe most will do it any way they can. Most in this category are the offspring of the Baby Boomers, and therefore have had a very cushy lifestyle.
