On a whim I picked up a Redington Form training rod and it is a hoot.

It is 50" long and has a Rio made line and uses a tuft of orange fluff as a "lure".  There are other practice rods out there, but they use yarn for a line and I thought the Redington approach would be closer to the real thing.

It took a bit to get the line to relax enough to cast properly, but this thing is great fun if you have the overhead height to use it indoors.

The cat at home went berserk when I started to use it there so I brought it to work and use it in the hallway (old mill building- lots of clear height).

Best new toy for me in a long while.  Don't know if it will improve my casting or not, but damn if I am not slaying the imaginary fish with this thing.

I am going to pick one of those up. Way back in the day I worked in a big fly shop. Daily we had a competition for lunch money with the flyO by Joan Wulff. We taped a dixie cup on the wall and each contestant got 3 casts to get the yarn in the cup. Winner got a free lunch. I got a lot of free lunches.

I bought one off Amazon and got it yesterday. I played with it a little bit in the backyard yesterday in the freezing cold and like it so far.

It does seem like it would be tough to use inside the average house, office etc.

You catch a lot of unintended things, like overhead lights, chair legs, coworkers...

I just throw the coworkers back in and keep on fishin', of course.

Some of them do put up a pretty good fight for not being game fish, though.

I've got the orvis practicaster. My couch separates the room so I can backcast just fine and offer sit and watch tv while casting at targets in front of me.

Best $50 I ever spent
