These are some photos from my first flyfishing trip out West (I am a Central PA boy).  I was offered an opportunity to fish in Wyoming and the Yellowstone National Park and I took it.  These photos were taken on the Madison River. Late August 2007.  Enjoy!

I wish that I had taken my digital camera instead of this disposable camera as this photo does not do this location any justice.

Cool I am going to Montana this summer and will be on the Madison River. What flies did you use/ reccomend?

I hope you have as good of a fishing trip as I did.  I was lucky enough to have found a large pod of fish.  Since they weren't rising very often and weren't taking what I was offering, I had to fish sub-surface.  I used various colors of sucker spawn, san juan worms, and assorted other 'junk' flies.

Understanding that I fish mostly in Central PA:   I would recommend that you get information from a flyshop in Montana close to the Madison River section that you will be fishing, for hatch information that time of year.  Stop in their shop, be a customer, buy the flies that they recommend as ask them for some suggestions for what locations to fish.

Super windy day on the Madison in early July

I'm chucking gigantic Salmon flies with my 4wt and I have the great idea that i'm gonna throw on a size 18 flash back pheasant tail for a dropper as I had quite a few fish come up but not take my fly

I had been doing what any well natured fly fisherman does while in the middle of a 14 mile float (drinking beer)

Chucked a nice long cast, had a strike, set the hook, missed the fish and here comes a size 4 Salmon fly right at my face, while I was able to dodge the Salmon fly, I forgot about the dropper and took it right to the top of the lip.

I had the dropper on for about 3 casts, and since there are no hook restrictions on the Madison, hadn't pinched the barb yet.

As soon as I felt it, I knew what happened, snapped my tippet off, told my friend that was rowing to pull the hell over, pass me 3 beers and the Crown Royal

About 20 minutes, 3 beers and a few shots later I let my other friend have a go at it with the leather man as I was feeling good

Fly came out no problem, not too much blood, I got to fish the bow of the boat the rest of the float and caught some decent fish, missed quite a few because at that point I was pretty toasted!

But hey, I got a decent story and even better picture out of it!

Well gents, I am headed off for the Colorado River today, between Vail and Aspen.  Snow is in the forecast but that should keep all the weekend warriors away.  I guess I picked a heck of a time to run out of Prairie Dogs to kill with my AR15 in the Texas panhandle.

If I can find them (the ol' notebook went Tango Uniform on me) I will try to post some of my pics from the Upper North Platte River, Saratoga, Wyoming from last fall.

There were a few on the water, but the weather was cold and miserable with water temps 1-2 degrees below optimal. We did catch everything on Skwala dries, save for a couple I caught on stonefly nymphs. No whitefish this trip *phew*
We only saw 3 other fisherman the entire week, and none were floating.
*well there was the family of poachers, but maybe they needed the food*

Cool stuff. I grew up fishing, love fishing, but fly-fishing has always seemed to much trouble.

I did recently by some gear so I could start trying it though.

That place looks awesome. I hope to someday sample Idaho.
Hoping for a southern Utah trip in two weeks.

You must sample the many flavors Idaho has to offer, lots of diversity across the state, and i'm still exploring a lot of the stuff after being here for 6 years.

I'm thinking about hitting Central WA for some fatty spring creek Rainbows Thurs. and Friday, but spawning Walleye and Smallies might trump that as I haven't taken my boat out yet this year

Read a lot and find someone who does it.  It's not that difficult.  I think all the line/leader/tippet crap was the most confusing when I started.  I dumbed it down a bit and went from there.  Keep it simple and fun.

You got to hit Rock Creek for a Salmonfly hatch. It's amazing. But, catching it just right is like finding a unicorn.

Ha! Just found out that ARFcom has a flyfishing section! Now I never need to leave... perfect.

So here's my photos of the last couple years in northern MN.

One of my ties (it's an easy one, I know), killer on smallmouth bass:

One of the above mentioned smallies, which come out at dusk to eat poppers:

One of the locals at my favorite brook trout hole:

Albright bar-stock aluminum cork-drag reel, Orvis "Clearwater" (cheap cheap, but it's slow and wonderful) 5wt rod:

One of the brookies from my local secret creek:

Early season brookie fishing:

The beautiful Bois Brule river in Wisconsin:

Nice brown caught that same night on the Brule:

We have a father/son fishing trip each year.

White River, Arkansas:

20" 'bow on the Bighorn:

My son on the "B" section of the Green River, Utah, 2008:

"A" section of the Green, just below the dam.  This is one of the prettiest places I've ever fished.  Stay OFF the A section on Saturdays when all the idiot rafters are out.

Lunch on the Green, 2008.  This is the kind of place you forget about everything.

Damn that is a nice fish. I went up to the little Salmon over in ID this past season all I ended up with was a broken 9WT.

I wish I could fish a few rivers more often. I got a couple chances to fish the South Fork of the Boise River while I was working in Idaho a few years ago, but never hooked up with any fish. Was still an amazing time though. Beautiful out there. First picture is a trout out of a mountain pond.
