So, over the past decade or so, I've noticed that I haven't seen as many of these guys as when I was growing up. Didn't think much of it until I got the opportunity to go fishing on vacation this week (Hilton Head, SC). I've been out to the beach at high and low tides looking for these guys and nothing. When I was younger you couldn't walk through the surf without seeing hundreds if not thousands of these guys everywhere. Am I missing something or has the best bait on the planet died out???

Haven't been surf fishing yet this year (to be remedied shortly), but last year I was picking them up by the hundreds for bait on the beach.  No shortage here for sure.  Maybe you're just looking in the wrong place.

I think they're still pretty plentiful in FL.

Still a bit cool to see them I think.  Wait until next month.

Spoke to a local guide this am. He seemed to think all of the dredging and beach rejuvenation projects have hit them pretty hard.

Yep.  There are several places I fish in FL and AL (panhandle) where projects have really taken a toll.  In the Mid-Atlantic, they seem more consistent in Delmarva but the weater has been shit.

I saw them on the beaches of Hatteras Island last month, not as many as usual but they are still there.

I battered and fried some up last year while I was in Florida just to try them out. Tasted just like soft shell crab. Maybe others are discovering the secret
