Ok, so my precision/potential 3-gun upper is almost done.  Now, I'm trying to decide on a scope.  The max distance range I have access to right now is 200 yards.  I have been thinking of maybe trying 3-gun, but this is primarily a precision type rig.  Now, I'm trying to figure out what would be the best all-around scope choice.  Yes, I know there's an element of "Jack of all trades, master of none" here.  Anyway, I was sort of looking at the $700 and below range (the lower the better).  I'm also not opposed to used/great condition.   I definitely want a 30mm tube, and illumination (unless it's an otherwise kick-ass scope/screamin' deal)  Here's some of the contenders.....

In the 3-gun type category..
Vortex PST 1-4
New SWFA 1-4 (don't know much about them but it looks sweet, the price is good and SWFA has a good products)
Burris XTR II 1-5
Burris MTAC
Leupold VX-R Patrol 1.25-4

Now, in the "Dedicated" precision category...if I go with any of these would it be best to just keep the scope and mount a mini dot too?
Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10
Vortex Viper HST 4-16
SWFA 3-15
Weaver Tactical 3-15

Thoughts?  Suggestions?

I was in the same boat, trying to get a build that could do both. I tried:

SWFA 1-6: Great optical design with minimal distortion at close range on 1X. However optically not that great at max power.
Vortex PST 2.5-10X32: Great optically at max power, fairly useless at low power close in shots sometimes taken in 3 gun.

Now I have a Bushnell 1-8.5X24 as a decent balance optic. At 8.5X its not quite as good as the PST on max, but good enough. It has more distortion than the SWFA on 1X, but still good enough for CQB.

I've done pretty damn well on long range stages with the SWFA 1-6x, including first round hits at 500y.  I see the criticism of the optics at max power, it does feel optimized for lower power, how you have the diopter adjustment set can be a factor with that.  Except for the weight its an awesome optic for 3gun, but you'll want the cat tail, as the magnification ring is stiff.

The best thing to do is shoot Tactical irons and put a dedicated precision scope on when you want to shoot far. QD mount with repeatable zero.
