Awesome! Great find.

I Googled the ammo but haven’t seen much in the way of accuracy reports. I’m going to try some out but it will be a few weeks before I can shoot. I’ll shoot it next to 123gr ELD-M

I have a 12" Faxon barrel from the group buy.

As soon as I have it together, I'll post up results.

I'm waiting on deals for PDW braces right now because I want it as compact as possible.

It's going to be a sick little PDW capable of supersonic reach beyond 1000yds in most of the places I shoot.

Lowest point for me around here is around 4400 ft ASL, so with 123gr Scenar or SMK, it will be supersonic to over 1100yds even when I used a reduced G7 BC.

Imagine having an under-the-coat AR15 PDW that will smoke cinder blocks better than an AK, then turn around and shoot out to long range with a high degree of first-round hit probability, then triple as a compact medium game hunting package that totes well in the mountains, and also serves as an HD blaster or truck gun.

Interesting. Specs look good, but I've never seen one in person. Looks like you'd need a single-ring mount for it. I like it.

OP I have been stalking you all over the inter webs, but not intentionally. Everywhere I looked for 6.5G info your username popped up! Good sh!t. Anyway I recently got my Lilja 319 barrel and can't wait to see what this sucker can do! Thanks for all the info.

This is the best group I've gotten from the LaRue, and I'm still using the Burris 1.5-6x scope that came with the package deal.

That will tighten up with a scope that has a fine reticle for precision. I like the little Burris scope and will use it for either hunting or loaner AR15s for my DM Courses.

Shooting the new Hornady American Gunner 123gr BTHP.

Here's a pic of what that reticle looks like, not exactly a precision reticle:

I got a bunch of chrono readings before going over to the 100yd and 200yd range.
Here are the speeds I got with the LaRue 18" Stealth 2.0 and 123gr American Gunner from Hornady that I bought for 55 cents per:

Just shot a SPR match using my 18” brownells barrel, PA 4-14 ffp and wolf steel case. Not so great for shooting 3/4” circles at 100yds with no bipod but did well on the rooftop stage with 12”, 10” and 8” gongs at 400yds. Made hits on all 3 using holdovers. Not the fastest by any means but was happy to make the hits.

Tag for feedback on the Faxon. Moving to AK soon and I'm wanting to use a spare receiver set I have to do a lightweight hunting rig. Thinking about using the 16 or 18" middy barrel. Seems like the lightest option available, and is within my price range.

what is the point of 16" with 6.5 Grendel?
Doesn't that round show the best performance with 20" barrel?

The difference in performance from a 16 and 20 is really not that much.
Link Posted: 12/14/2017 1:52:30 AM EDT
I am actually thinking about building 6.5 Grendel AR-15 for myself.
So, I am not concerned about extra weight or length. But I want maximum performance.

should I just get a 20" barrel then?

I just heard that 5.56 round is "cooked" much better in a 20" barrel than in 16", so how come that difference is not that much for 6.5 Grendel?

What if I want maximum performance at the ranges of 500 yrd and above?

Dude just read the thread. Plenty of charts with all the answers to your questions have been posted.

If all you are doing is taking it to a range, why wouldn't you just get the longest possible barrel? Am I missing something?

hmmm after skimming through the thread and links I am considering a 20" for 6.5G.

The Precision Firearms has it for $325, they also offer options of 8-fluted and 6-fluted for $150 and $125 respectively, that adds up close to $500.

few quick questions:
1) I did quick research reading different threads and it seems that there is no need to overpay $150 more for fluting since it won't matter much?
2) In order to build rifle quickly, can I re-use the lower from my 16" .223 chambered factory built Colt AR-15?
3) If answer to question #2 is Yes, do I need to also change spring and buffer tube, since I am using rifle length gas system?
4) I just found this 20" BCA 6.5 Grendel barrel for just $139: BCA AR-15 20" BLACK NITRIDE 4150 STEEL HEAVY BARREL Any comments on that?

It is up to you, I have both types if you don't want to pay for it is not a big deal.

2) In order to build rifle quickly, can I re-use the lower from my 16" .223 chambered factory built Colt AR-15?

Yes you can use your lower. Just get 6.5 magazines for your lower.

3) If answer to question #2 is Yes, do I need to also change spring and buffer tube, since I am using rifle length gas system?

No change is necessary for your buffer tube but spring and buffer weight might depending what you are using in your lower. Just shoot it first and go from there. I didn't change my h2 buffer and spring on my 18 inch barrel.

4) I just found this 20" BCA 6.5 Grendel barrel for just $139: BCA AR-15 20" BLACK NITRIDE 4150 STEEL HEAVY BARREL Any comments on that?

I have no experience but I seen good and bad things from them. I think it is the luck of the draw. If you are after accuracy don't cheap on the barrel.

I’ve been wanting a Grendel for years now. I think I’m finally going to pull the trigger on building one now that I’ve been in the long range for for a while. I can’t seem to make up my mind on 18” vs 20”. Also can’t decide between Faxon, Odin Works and Ballistic Advantage barrels. Any thoughts from you guys? I will reload for it and I’m looking for 1000yd rig. May even run some PRS gas gun matches at some point...

If your main goal is 1k then the longer the better. I have the 20inch Faxon and after a few hundred rounds I am seeing quite good accuracy(1moa give or take) with factory ammo so I'd imagine reloads even better. I was shooting at a 9.6inch wide piece of steel at 1018yards last month and went 2 for 9 in some crazy winds. I didn't have my big gong with me so a sub moa piece of steel in 25mph+ winds at over 1k wasn't ideal. I also did not know the distance and this was my first time at that range with that barrel.

Anyway all excuses aside now I was happy with its performance.

You'll definitely want to go with a 20" barrel for 1000 yd for the extra velocity. I started with a 20" Faxon Heavy Fluted, which shot well with 123 Scenars over AR Comp. It was very light weight, but heated up pretty quick. I swapped it out for a 20" BFS carbon sleeved barrel after Rainier had a killer BF deal and was already getting .6" using Hornady Black. Hoping to tighten it up even more with handloads.

I would check out the 20" Odin Works here. My 18" with the adjustable gas block is an awesome shooter.

Shot my brothers Christmas present today. Aero build Faxon Gunner 18", shooting elds with a Burris mtac 1-6. It's definitely over gassed as the flat Aero rail doesn't have enough room at the top for a jbo adjustable. Not sure there is anything smaller. Currently using a Geissele as that's what I had that would fit.
On right.

Honestly wasn't thrilled how I shot a 100, shot two groups before the 200 and would have two touching and then throw one. Could have been me who know. But was going to get a 200 either way. Decent with the 1-6 I think.

Try using a heavy buffer. I wouldn't say my 20inch Faxon was "overgassed" but it had more than it needed. I put in a sprinco enhanced buffer spring and a spikes T-2 to slow mine down. It still cycles perfectly even with temps down in the teens. Accuracy wise I think you'll see the groups shrink the more you shoot it. Mine needed a few hundred rounds before I started getting groups I liked.

It's running a white spring with h2 buffer. The one that came with my Larue Grendel. I also cycled fine with a red spring from the obr 7.62 but charging was somewhat difficult. Which sprinco did you go with?

I am using the blue. I also have a full auto carrier so that's a tad more weight than a semi.

I have one of their 20" 5-R Nitrided barrels. I did a quick test firing with the cheapie Wolf ammo (which isn't supposed to do well in 5-R barrels)

This is what I was able to do at 160yds on a 12" target, 5 shots from a cold barrel.

Conditions haven't been favourable enough for some serious testing with good ammo.

New guy from Nevada here - It took a lot to convince me to go with a 6.5 Grendel vs 308. In fact I wasn't really convinced until I took deliver of my Alexander Arms Grendel earlier this week. I figured it I was gonna buy one it might as well be from the guy that invented the round. Anyway, I took it out to the range for it's break in. It took about 20 rounds for the mags to loosen up and the barrel to warm and cool a few times but after that I was shooting easy MOA at 100 yards. The only problem I have now is that I want more.. LOL..

My 16" Alexander barrel (my first Grendel) didn't really start settling down until after 5 boxes or so down the pipe.

It does much better with a build up of copper in the bore.

Here's a good vid that Rex Tibor did on 'copper equilibrium'

My AA 16" does surprisingly well, even with the Wolf ammo.

Trying to decide what lower will go with the 12" build. I'm looking at the LaRue Stealth 2.0 handguard and upper option they just released. I love how slim the Stealth 2.0 is compared to my other handguards, even the really nice MI MLOK, since the LaRue handguard doesn't touch the barrel nut anywhere.

I could do the 10.5" Stealth 2.0 option and just sell what I have now for the upper.

I ordered a Maxim Defense FDE PDW brace at SHOT with the amazing discount they had on them ($275) and that even came with a cheek brace in addition to the full kit.

I put the SB Tactical Brace on my Lilja 318 and actually really like it.

Anyone know any good, available, inexpensive 10 round mags?

Brownell’s sell E-Lander and C Products Defense 6.5 Grendel mags. I like E-Lander best and with Mil/Le discount with Brownell’s E-Lander are less than $17 each. You can get ASC mags pretty cheap from 44mag.com. I have several ASC mags and the ten round mags only hold nine rounds but do work. I don’t own any CPD mags but all 6.5 Grendel mags have lemons slip through so I recommend buying from a vendor with good CS.

I'm thinking this is going to be my new favorite round as well. Just recently started building one.

To be honest, I got my first Grendel barrel/bolt combo just out of curiosity more than anything.

I was thinking that just maybe it would be a good set-up for some of the military only Sniper matches I was shooting in 2-man teams, when the ranges were limited to 700m mostly. Since these competitions included timed land nav courses and lots of movement in between stations, I hated carrying around beast rifles like heavy barreled AR10s and bolt guns with 22-24" barrels.

My first hand load velocities were mediocre, to say the least, and I was not impressed at all.

I started to get a real sour taste in my mouth about 6.5 Grendel, thinking I had been tricked into some BS hype, and my .260 Rem looked better and better.

Boy was I in for a surprise...

Most ten round mags for 6.5 Grendel are gtg but lemons slip through on all brands. Best to buy from a vendor with good CS in case you get a lemon. My ASC mags and original C Products ten round mags only hold 9 rounds. ASC and CP count the chambered round into mag capacity. My E-Lander ten round mag holds ten rounds. I have not used any CPD 6.5 Grendel mags. I have several E-Lander 6.5 Grendel mags and I like them.

What’s the cheek weld like on this? I like the concept but wonder if it beets you up. It looks like there are a few edges. Natural firing position?

I picked up a super cheap Bear Creek barrel and BCG from Primary Arms during their Black Friday sales. I have since acquired a cheap upper receiver and mated them together with an ALG rail purchased on BF. Now the question is, how do I finish off the barrel? Recommendations on what muzzle device are greatly appreciated. That's all I need for this to be taken to the range.
