went in to work last night to work my shift and was meet with some awesome news. Our plant is to close at the end of next year. I work at a smaller coal fired power plant, we where told that we are closing because of the rising coal prices, low Natural Gas prices and environmental regs that come in to play mid 2014. now for the really good part there is 8gigaWatts(that is a whole lot of power) of power that are in the same situation we are, some just because of the new environmental regs. The gov is saying that power plant have to meet new regs by the mid of 2014 or close. there are only a couple of ways to come into compliance one of them is a scrubber which costs 400 million dollars and the others ways are pretty close in price. The plan is for new NG plants to produce the power, those plants are not even built yet. So blackouts here we come??

I am sorry to hear of your impending job loss.  Start saving as much as possible, and think about what you would like your next job to be.  Then think about how to make that new job happen.

Energy costs are going to continue to increase.  It is one of the essential things that our modern lifestyle requires.  What that means is the government knows you need to consume it so it is a guaranteed revenue stream for them when they tax it.

In 2010 we invested in a grid tied solar system.  We didn't do it because we are green enviro-weenies.  We did it because it is clear that energy prices will increase, and not clear in my opinion that the future possible solar price per watt ratio will decrease as fast.

Just another small cut from the marxists in this country to destroy it while we do nothing.

Remember, this is all about the Engineered Destruction of the Middle Class, in every respect including our energy sources.

It used to be if you said things like this people thought you were a Kook.....now, it's pretty damn hard to deny! I for one am with you, nobody is as fucking stupid as they would like us to believe they are. It's intentional.

No, you are one of the very few to understand this.

Most folks are frigging crude, guillible, naive, selfish, self-centered idiots who can't think outside the box.

That'd be the best of most of them.

What area is this?

ETA: And if there are rolling blackouts due to lack of electricity, Washington DC needs to be included.  During the afternoons.  In July.  No AC for you, Congress!

I talked with a guy from Tri Gen out in Craig, CO a couple of months ago.  He said he wasn't sure if they were going to still be in operation after 2014.  That plant is somewhere in the 1300 MW range, if I remember correctly they had three turbines.

Any economic recovery is going to be sacked by energy costs.

As a US Senator, don't tell me that we need to have "adult conversations" and then send me an email asking me if we should lower gas prices by raising taxes on petroleum companies.  Dear Senator Warner: please look at the @whatever.com part of my email address and think to yourself: hmmm, "might this man have more than a 3rd grade understanding of engergy and power production?"  Sorry, but I just had to rant a bit about the terribly juvenile email I received from one of my senators this morning.

We have a perfect storm brewing for energy production in this nation.  I think we'll see some real problems in about four years or so.

Of this I am certain. There is no "must" about it. To ride the U.S. down to the ground IS the plan.

Funny thing is that when the greenies wet dream is achieved, they will be swept aside and likely imprisoned to make way for the communists who are really behind the destruction of America. Same for the gays, race pimps, unionists, etc.

If we don't die, we can have a good laugh at their expense.

On the upside there is an election between now and 2014.  On the downside I don't hold out much hope for either party to fix things.

The last line is EXACTLY correct.

The Socialists will be ordering them into holes and shooting them just like us.

If there's one next to me I'll be laughing at him/her with my last breath.

Friggin' Useful Idiots of America. These SOB's would make Stalin proud.

Not to be political, the Dem's whole mission is to destroy us, it seems to be clearly evident from what they are doing and the whole party is going along with it

The Repubs have no backbone and even if they did, the problem at this point is so far along as to be completely INSOLVABLE.

Sadly, it's only a matter of time and the Quislings here in the US who will sell their soul for a piece of bread will be so numerous, they will be hired by the .gov and will overrun folks with or without supplies in a matter of 2 years.

They will make civil unrest look like a playground brawl.

Why do you think there is so much effort to pit the Haves vs the Have-nots here????

Indeed.  When BHO took office I wondered whether he was incredibly naive and didn't realize how bad his policies would screw over the country or whether he intentionally was raping the country.

Now there's no doubt it's intentional - only thing I don't know for sure is at who's behest he's doing it.  I have theories, though.

O and pals are BRILLIANT -in the wrong way.

Wish they would direct their energies toward solving the problems in the US rather then compounding them exponentially in every direction possible to hasten their 'takeover'.

from wat i understand all coal plants in the US have to comply by mid 2014 or shut down. fyi it is the number of units a place has not the turbines that count.

Well, very sorry you will be loosing your job. Fine time to start thinking smart and move forward.

What happens when no one can afford the power that is being provided? Shutting down plants or making them move to more regs will only make power prices go threw the roof. You might see brown outs in some areas that are supplied buy coal power only. Like you mentioned, the natural gas or other plants are not in place yet to take over the load. And the rest will be forced to pay mega premiums for power. All that will do will increase the slump we are in and give more strength to those in control of the power grid. And with the cost of power rising, the rate of inflation will only continue to rise at a steeper progressive curve.

It would be interesting to get a total count of all plants, and then a count of plants shutting down and a count of plants upgrading.

Considering Obama's previous comments about the Coal Industry this is not surprising.

http://www.wvrecord.com/news/215679-coal-official-calls-obama-comments-unbelievable

"I was the first to call for a 100 percent auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter," Obama continued. "That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.

"So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted."
