I would just like to have a tent so I dont' have to go borrowing one.  Want one w/ closed bottom that is good in the rain.

so if you went campin and you woke up w/ your pants around you ankles, would you tell anyone?

Yeah, the theory is that it would be better built than a $30 china mart tent.  It may not be a good 4 season apocalypse tent, or on the cutting edge of light weight tech as the latest greatest lieght weight commercial  tent but, for light family use I'm thinking maybe I shoudl fo.

I did a chat w/ CTD cust svc, the guy assured me it is french surplus.

I'd skip it. Even for your FL location.

well does anyone have any recommendations on a better affordable tent?  Should i just get a commercial dome style tent at walmart or whatever?

Looks flimsy, the reviews say the poles and stakes are weak.  It's just a bug net.

You would be better off with a tarp and a can of bug spray.

I have turned anti surplus though, so YMMV.

maybe I'll just get a couple of these for cheap campsite camping.  They are pop up, just unzip the bag and "boyoyoyoying!"  I hate setup/break down of tents typically.  sloped to make it easy to get into.  sort of a comfortable bivy style I guess.   May not be totally free standing. perhaps the corners still need to be staked.

$39

comes w/ a rain fly too

How do you want to use the tent?  Car camping, bug out shelter, backpacking? How many people do you want to stuff inside?

car/canoe camping.  That one above is theoretically a 2 person though it would probably be someting better for just one guy.  I was thinking about getting one for me and another for the wife n kid since i snore.

coleman makes a couple instant pop opens.  Here is the supposed 4 person, might be big enough for two adjults and a kid, $80.

for backpacking I'd probably just use tarp and bivy sack or an ultra light.

We had good luck with a Coleman tent for car camping.

I am pretty sure you will wish you didn't spend that 30 bucks if you do.

If weight isn't an issue stick with the Coleman stuff like mentioned above, it will be heavy, but likely work well.

We had French tents identical to those when I was in Scouts as a kid.  They were ok but nothing great and I'd never buy one tosday.  We replaced them with Eureka Timberlines that were 100 x's better.

def gonna pass on the tent in the op.  doesn't look well ventalated anyway.

I'm gonan get a big instant pop  up type for car camping w/ the fam.  For backpacking i'll get an ultralight or just use line, the poncho/tarp and a bivy sack.

jus ordered this quechua instanta popu up 3 man tent

lol, guess I got a french tent anyway.

check it out, pretty cool.  you cna open/close the vents on the permattached rainfly from the indide.

Not good for hiking, too heavy and a bigh awkward ca 25" wheel when packed, but really easy to set up and take down w/o having ot bother w/ a tarp below, threading tent poles, or guying external rain flys.

Wow, that's quite different than where you started.

I think you'll be a lot happier with that then the French surplus thing.

What's your deal with French tents, though?

I bought a cheap "2 person" dome tent from the PX. It was about $25. I usually hammock camp but was going to an area where I wasn't sure about trees/supports.

The rain fly isn't much so I coated the thing with a good amount of spray on water proofing. I have taken it on the motorcycle a couple times now and it has worked great. It packs up to size of 2 20oz bottles end to end.

That brings me up to 3 tents and a hammock. They all have different uses.

Quality 2 man tents are dirt cheap on the discount sites. There's no reason to ever buy a Coleman or whatever. I've even had very good luck on ebay with hammocks.

I'm thinking about trying out the Wal Mart Ozark Trail Jr dome tent. I think they run about $25. I saw a video where the guy treated the tent with a silicone mix and it was completely dry after rain. I figure worst case I'm out $25
