I'm loading up some .30-40 Krag for my BIL, and I'm not sure what bullet to use. I got a sweet deal on some 170gr  Nolser partition round nose, but I'm thinking 170gr may be too light. I could get some 220gr semi-spitzer, which look like a round nose and is more in tune with the original cartridge design. So, you all think a decently hot 170gr partition will work, or should I go for the 220gr?

BTW, this would be for deer and possibly elk in SE Alaska.

Which ever one is the most accurate is the one I would use.

I have a Springfield 1896 in 30/40.  I usually load 180 grn round nose.  Tried 150 spitzers once but they don't work well.  Probably want to avoid the 220 grn.  That caliber is a little short on hump for the heavy bullets.

Any one know where to get some brass for a 30-40 Krag?  I have a couple of them but no brass.  Lat time I checked at Midway they don't have it listed there any more.   I'm sure it is loosing popularity but I would like to get some before it is no longer made.

Thanks,

Indy
