Wal Mart has LED lanterns listed as $5 but they clearance at $1.  They have two brightness setting and one flashing red.  These don't seen rugged but they should work at house during power outages.

If it's an Ozark Trail model like this one, it's a pretty decent lantern even at 5  bucks...

Runs on the 3 white LED setting for about 48 hours on a set of 4 AA alkalines, with pretty constant brightness the whole time - has better light dispersion if you unscrew the top to replace the chrome-plated plastic cone with a piece of slightly oversize carton packing foam.

I gave in and bought a $20 LED lantern at Fry's a few years ago.  Since then, it's been the most useful thing to have around during power outages.  Flashlights just get me to it, and then it follows me wherever I go.

That's it.  I bought 5 at $1.00 each.

I have several of these that I gave to my kids for our "around the yard" camping adventures. They do not put out a wide area of light but they do a decent job up close. For instance reading a book in your tent. The batteries last a good amount of time. Puts out IMHO about 2 cndle power. My daughter keeps one with her by the bed at all times.  I would not reccomend these for shtf scenarios unless they are part of a larger plan, but they are worth the buck or two they cost, I got'em last summer for $5 each.                                  There are actually some LED type lamps in the lighting dept. that also accept batteries that look like they would put out more light than these lanterns.

Those are killer little lanterns if you don't need a lot of light.

My 4yr old has been trying to destroy mine(hers now)daily for almost a yr now.
So far i think her farthest throw with it is around 9feet
Just change the batterys every once in a great while and it keeps on going.

I used one all deer hunting season in the back of my Tahoe, where I slept .  Worked well for $5.  If they are $1 locally I will buy a few.

At the very least they are great for training the kids.

No doubt. They are really durable. And their size makes them easy to carry/keep up with.

I have the Target (Rock River) model that went on clearance last year––it rocks!

I wonder if I can get better fill light if I 'frost' the lens w/ some Krylon 'frosting' paint.

If I find them at $1, I will buy 10 and test several.
