Wise Food: Stroganoff
Cost: $6.99
While cruising the aisles at Cabela’s I came across some single double serving style packages of Wise Food Stroganoff. There were 5 or so different meals, and I decided to go with the stroganoff to try out, even though it is vegetarian.

Preparation: Package calls for opening , removing oxygen pack, adding 2 cups of boiling water, stirring, and sealing pouch. Package calls for letting product sit for 12 minutes.

Taste: The stroganoff does not have a very strong taste at all. The mushrooms, onions, sour cream, and beef flavor are all but nonexistent. It pretty much tasted like watered down cream of mushroom soup. I added then kept adding crushed black pepper and it at least gave the food some flavor. The stuff would probably be good to have for little kids because it is so bland. I would give the Wise Food stroganoff a C. It doesn’t taste bad or good, very plain.

Honestly, this would taste much better if it were marketed as some kind of tuna noodle casserole. I think if you had this and stirred in a pouch of tuna it would be pretty good, bumping it to a B.

I have tried Wise Foods before at a Preparedness Expo, but cannot remember what product it was or how it tasted. I will probably try 2-3 more our these meals and see how they pan out. This stuff could keep you alive and fed, just not with a pleased palate. If I was storing this stuff as a long term food prep in the #10 cans, I would be very sure I had some canned/pouched tuna to go along with it.

The one I tried cooked up thicker. It also was not very tasty. I will not buy more.

I have been trying to get my wife to try some mountain house, but every time she looks at the sodium content she has a seizure and I gotta wait for a while to try again.

Any of these type meals (mre's, freeze dried whatever) not have mountains of sodium?

Looking at the nutrition list on the back, it seems about as nutrient dense as reverse osmosis water FAIL!

I saw some of these on Saturday and was going to pick some up later this week. Thanks for the review Zedhead. Saved me some poorly spent cash. I will stick with Mountain House unless someone else knows of a better brand.....

I just made about 40-50 or so meals similar to these and MH today, with very good results (opened and tested 4 of them with alcohol stove). All sealed in mylar w/ O2 absorbers... And all lacking the sodium content of MH.

Used FD meat (ground beef) instead of TVP and made a very good variety. I will be posting a thread on it probably tomorrow, with pics.

FWIW I did some testing last week with TVP, and the switch to FD meat made a huge difference. Also learned that generally speaking using less water than indicated in directions is better (the exception being instant mashed potato blends).
