Compatriots!

I'm looking for an article that I had read on another site referencing using Clorox for water purification.

The article stated that since Clorox loses its effectiveness over time, the better option would be to use another substance, which was a granular type of pool sanitizer (calcium hypochlorite).

A 5lb container could sanitize several thousand gallons of water (per the article).

Has anyone heard of this? Does it make sense?
