Hello all, KD2KNQ (Danny) here from NY,

Im new to ham radio and got my tech license back in the spring. I have a few Baofeng HT with Nagoya and Slim Jim antennas that I play around with occasionally.

So now onto my problem. Like I said, I have 3 Baofengs of my own that I programmed using the Chirp software. A couple of my friends saw how affordable and easy it was so they purchased the same radios....all in all I have successfully programmed around 8 Baofengs with Chirp.

One of my friends purchased a Wouxun KG-UV6D also with a Nagoya 771 and asked if I could program it for him. From everything I read, it was the same process as the Baofengs on Chirp. .... Boy was I wrong.

I created a programming sheet for the Wouxun with the same local 2m and 70cm repeaters I use with my radios and for some reason It wont open the repeater. I can receive the repeaters and listen into conversations (same antenna same location) I then tried to transmit simplex to my baofengs and everything worked fine. So i figured the PL tone for the repeater was wrong. I double checked the offset, direction and PL tone and everything was correct.

I then did a factory reset and tried to copy and paste the programming sheet I had saved for my Baofengs and pasted them onto the Wouxun. No dice.

I then did another factory reset and tried to program it manually in frequency mode and still nothing...

Im confused because i dont believe its a transmitting issue since I can transmit simplex and its not a range/antenna issue since it receives the repeater and is the same setup as my baofeng and that reaches fine.

any ideas guys?
thanks in advance

Have you tried factory software instead of Chirp?

What range did you try simplex? Sounds like the RF power on that radio is very low. Works to the next room but not to distant repeaters. Also make sure the antenna is the correct type. A lot of reverse SMA types are around.

Nah I didnt try downloading the factory software because when I did a factory reset and tried to program the repeater in frequency mode manually and still got the same result I figured it was an equipment or menu setting/option i was missing

on simplex using this Wouxun, my buddies whose homes range from 3-6 miles away have heard my transmissions

UPDATE:

Ended up being a defective radio itself.  My buddy purchased a second unit and we used the same antenna and same programming and it worked flawlessly.
