I asked this in GD, but I guess I should have asked here instead. A local guy is selling a Troybilt Tuffy 4.0 CRT Rototiller for $225. I live on 1/2 an acre, and at worst case, I would use it to turn my whole yard into a garden. Most likely use is for a garden area I turned over with a skid steer a year ago, so it's pretty soft.

The engine alone would cost more than that.If you need a tiller I would say that it is a deal.

for 3 years i used my brothers.  exact same thing.  its a good little tiller but it will drag you around lol.  for 250 i would say grab it as long as there is no fluid leaks that are visible.

I'm going to look at it tomorrow. It's funny how different the views in the GD post were.

Don't buy it... unless you're going to use it year after year. You can rent one like that for about $40-$60 a day.

That seems a little expensive for a used tiller.

We have had ours for 20+ years and that is a sweet price. It does everything we want it to do. YMMV

i have one i bought in 1988, with the 31/2 horse tecumseh engine. i used it for 15 years tilling a 50'x50' garden spring and fall, and it it still GTG. it is getting new tires right now, only thing i have ever done to it. i put stabil in the gas over winter, and cranked it every 6 weeks or so over winter and it always ran like a top in the spring. recently, my daughter gave me a 5 HP pony that was 2 yo, after moving into town, so i should be in good shape on tillers. i would strongly encourage you to get that tiller for $250, it will last for years.

CRT tillers can't compost in material. Look for a FRT.

A used Troybilt Horse can be had for around $300 if you watch craigslist. I see them all the time for $100 with blown motors, and the motors can be changed in 15 minutes. there is literally only 4 bolts holding the engine on.

Wait till about January. That's when I see a ton for cheap. $100 to $150 with blown motors is common. There is one on ebay right now for $175 in Pennsylvania with a blown motor. Invest another $100 for a Honda knock off motor and you will have something that will last a lifetime.

The new Troybilt tillers are Junk, and I do mean junk. That one you listed is a new one.

My Troybilt Horse (date code 1971) is on engine number 4, and before I got it was used on a 5 acre truck farm for 20 years continuous service as the only cultivating / tilling tool. It has provided another 20 years since then.

January won't change pricing where I live. I live in Kommiefornia, where all year is garden season. I understand the newer ones are not built as well as the older ones, but they are just damn expensive here.

The only advice I have, is be willing to travel. My brother went 300 plus miles (each way) to get his Troybilt horse. It had blown motor, but he got the rest for $50.

Here is one in Orange county Kali.

Looks to be a good deal around here they would go for 300 to 500. I would take two bills over and make them an offer.

Got it for $200. The lady said she bought it a few years ago and has only used it a few times, and it looks like it. Just downloaded the manual for it online.

Was in my lawn mower dealer's today and saw that they're selling Troy Bilt Pony's for $1099. I still think you did good.

This is the lowest end rear tine troybuilt their is, but it's still over $700 new at Lowes, so I am happy with it.
